Josh Papalii

Ironically all Origin players bar Matto (18th man twice last year)
Plenty more than this list of players..
I rest my case..

Lewis the club wanted him gone
Robert's seemed mutual
Ado Carr could be genuine.Family here and living in Melbourne
Papali was during 10day cooling off period

Matto seems only one.
Klemmer did the same however.

In any case we could all go on and on as to why, how etc. The point is contracts are broken regularly.

The problem with enforcing the terms of a contract within a team sport such as the NRL is that whilst you can enforce the performance of the terms of the contract, you can't enforce how well they are performed.

Which from either side can and does provide a great deal of incentive to negotiate a way out when the club / player relationship breaks down for whatever reason.

Examples being that if a player wants to hold a club to their end, the club can't simply walk away, but can throw them into reggies for the duration, which isn't going to benefit either club nor player, or if a player wants out of a club, it'll very likely affect their performance both on and off the field, so again no one wins there.

But as Barry said, they aren't just "broken" , they're renegotiated.

From all reports he wants to return to Sydney ASAP but Storm won’t release him:

His point was correct.

All you did was provide examples of where a player didn't see out a contract because the player and the club agreed it wasn't worth continuing. What he was suggesting is that the contract itself provides the means for that to occur and ensures that both parties can separate in a mutually agreed fashion. So, in all of your examples the contract was critically important. You reinforced his original point.

Good point.

Also, there would literally be hundreds of instances throughout the year where a player requests to go somewhere else, only to be told "You have a contract".

Most of those don't make the news because the player and agent quietly accept the club's decision or they work something out. The relationship has to sour pretty badly before the agent bitches to journos.
