There are ample assistant coaches who are unemployed that would jump at the chance to get a gig right now. Just off the top of my head, Dean Pay's name comes to mind. As if he wouldn't be a better defensive coach than the clown we have doing the job right now? I'm sure if we gave Pay a one year contract with a 2nd year in the clubs favour he would still take it. But hey, there aren't any quality coaches available. OK, sure.

They just have better talent scouts then us and know that power and speed are essential in our game. It goes all the way back to the 70's teams that they had. Always powerful, aggressive and super fast. They recruit well.

It is what it is. We had MJs money tied up this year and it wasn't released until to late. That is just the situation we where in. We signed Opacic 12 days after MJ news broke. Otherwise perhaps we get someone better.
But at the same time we are in what I beleive a transition phase. I'm big on juniors and developing them. Look how long it took Yeo to become a top shelf forward. Patience is needed.

D.Brown is still very young. So is Kafusi. Mahoney still has improvement. 2022 we should become stronger.
Penisini is the real deal. Another off season and he will be dynamite. Russel is another talented kid. And even though Dunster is 22 he has barely been able to play the last 2yrs with Coronavirus at a time when he was developing. Already in his brief NRL career of 11 games. I think 3 of those off bench so 8 games you can see him getting used to the physical side of the game. I've said this 10x. Players need 30 games before they are used to the physical side. Forwards need closer to 50.

Next year we will have a similar squad. And there is reason to beleive the squad gets stronger. Nobody is going to be over 30.
N.Brown will be the oldest at 29. So everyone in squad will still be at physical peak.
We only lose Fergo who is passed it.

Mahoney,Penisini,Kafusi,D.Brown,Dunster will all continue to improve. That is 5 guys from our 17 who all will be better players.

Then look at our depth. There are guys here who may surprise and push for a top 17 spot.

Ray Stone who is nothing more then a handy back up will slightly improve.He isn't in the top 17 but a reliable fill in.

Weirimu Greig could suprise with a big off season. May make side

Russel as above

Arthurs for all the shit he cops will naturally develop and be better atleast physicaly. Still remains a back up.

And who knows who else pops up. There will be 1 or 2 kids I am sure who are closer to ready then we know about without NSW cup.

Certainly understand signings can be done behind closed doors, but it remains a concern that we do not seem to have a lot of interest in outside players. The Cowboys placEd a lot of faith in pace today and showed how influential that can be,

Recruitment needs to look at players with decent top speed, we don’t really have any in the backline, to provide competition. Said it before, the club espouses best practice, and in team sports that relates to minimum turnover on the roster of 15% per season. So at worst 3/4 new players, haven’t heard any rumours and the available player market is getting smaller by the day.

Ok, so of the top 30 players off-contract, there are six of them, which represents 20% of the squad. That's more than the 15% turnover you said we don't have. Even if we re-sign one of them that'll still be over 15%. Or is that one of those 'stats' you hate so much?

Just difficult to see who is available to improve our speed issue.

We might have to wait for 2023 for that, though Penisini was too fast for Holmes last weekend, and he's probably now cemented himself in the top 17.

I don't know what you're scared of stats for, they actually support this. Our edges haven't been good at breaking the line, especially in recent weeks.

Yes.
Opacic,Sivo,Gutherson make it slow. And Fergo even thou gets going takes off sluggish these days. So 4/7 where slow.
That backline above puts 1/7 slow. Even with Opacic or Sivo 5/7 would be reasonably quick
