Looks like Mahoney might get a lot of free dinner offers, with the current publicity Ayoub is drumming up... what are the odds the other diner that took the photo and shared with the media was know to Ayoub's company?
Wouldn't need to have been an associate of Ayoub, I'd say the choice of a very public meeting in a rivals leagues club is virtually guaranteed to have a photo / video hit the press or socials these days.

Ayoub informing Parra of the meeting is probs because of the same reason, it's not like there seemed to be any attempt from either party to conceal the meeting, on the contrary the choice of venue says both were quite happy to make it public.

I had trouble rheeding the rest of the article after the "I do things the right way" Quote. Mainly from laughter.
> “I was being transparent,” Mahoney’s agent Sam Ayoub said.

Well, there’s a first time for everything, I guess.
I think he mentioned $700,000 so many times that I now think Rheed is worth $700,000 😳
Methinks that someone may have mentioned that perhaps he should make a statement so as to not tarnish someone’s reputation. The consistent denial of chasing the $700k collision reinforces that

I think the Mahoney dinner with schmuck then Ayoub talking to media is in part about trying to take heat and attention off Gutherson's disgraceful negotiations so far. They have picked up on the negativity from the fans.

Does it actually matter to any of the people directly involved what the fans think in November 2021?

The way I see it.

If I am at a place I like and wish to stay I would see what their offer is. If I was happy I'd sign but if I wanted to test the waters I would ask my agent to see what other clubs are offering. Would I waste my time meeting them? NO.
If they made an offer that made me consider leaving only then would I go and meet and check things out to see if I liked what I saw before informing the people I work for know what they are offering and what it will take for me to stay with them. That's if I wanted to stay or wanted out.

I understand perhaps clubs won't make offers untill they meet the player. If that is how it works then fair enough but I call bullshit on that. I find dinner very strange way also. I imagine a meeting at club and a walk around for a few hours a more normal process. Dinner means a few drinks and imo a greasy way to do things.

The fact Rheed has met to me suggests the Bulldogs made a very good offer. One he seriously considered and thought it was worth meeting for
As far as Gould goes he is a manipulative groomed. He would of not only talked The Dogs up as a team on the up but also bagged the Eels and explained or manufactured bullshit internal problems. This is why he would of wanted dinner and probably a few drinks.

What is interesting is how O’Neil approaches the overall cap issue with somehow having all these player contracts expiring at the same time.

According to SEN this morning, Marata was on $200k and it was increased to $275k , which seems to be aimed at being so low that the player is being shown the door ( but not shown the door) . Think he will be getting overs, but is this a ploy to create space to extend the other players or the manner that MON operates, lowball and see if it works.

As we see, managers are no longer fooled by so called smart operators, hopefully we don’t continue that path, and try and get close to market and that way get loyalty to play a part. Being $200k short is not smart as it would point to not recognising the players value, doesn’t work outside footy and can’t see it working inside.

May you live in interesting times is a Chinese curse, the next 2 to 6 weeks will certainly be interesting.

Frankly I don't believe any of those figures. I reckon around $800k would be closer to the mark any club, including Eels, would be offering Reed.
Unsure if $800k is a wise decision. He's part of a spine and keeps us humming along, but he's not a game breaker. I'd rather let him and Gutho walk and buy a GOAT like Teddy, Ponga or Turbo for $1.4m.

Marata is a hard worker but how much was/is he really worth?

This is really simplified but if you start with a total salary cap at $10m for 2022 for 30 players you have a mean of $333k each. Allow for your top 3 players to earn say, $2M between them that brings the mean down to $296k for the remaining 27 players. A couple of 2nd tier players on $500k to $600k each means you have $7m for 25 players and then add in another 2 or 3 players on minimum wage of $120k and you have $6.6m for 22 players so an average of $300k each. I am sure Pou can create a bell curve that shows a probable spread of salaries across a full squad.

Where does Marata sit against the average player and therefore average cost?
He is a hard worker but doesn't stand out as a 'star' on a consistent basis. He isn't likely to win you a game on his own and although he won't necessarily lose you a game, his ill-discipline at times need to be taken into account. So I would value him at about $350k to $400k max (using the very simplified process above).

If the stated initial offer of $275k is accurate, it isn't a huge lowballing. It is probably about 30% short but if Warriors want to pay a slightly better than average player $625k they are going to be filling their squad positions 21-30 with minimum wage players and hoping they don't get injuries to their top squad.

Of course none of the above might be right and I might simply have no idea, but I reckon MON does as he has been doing okay to get our squad into a competitive and pretty well balanced state over the last few years.

So it Cap Management totally MONs domain or is there a committee involved?

Something in Ayoub’s statement was interesting. He said how would he know how much a player is worth if he doesn’t entertain other offers. Initially I thought it was bullshit, but then I thought he probably has a range which he thinks the player can get, but when it comes to certain situations (I.e. Rheed’s rapid rise) and players around the upper pay tiers, then that range would be $100ks even potentially $1m over span of contract. Meetings would be necessary to lock down on amount.

THEN!!! On the flip side, how would a club f**ken know a player’s value (I.e. what a rival would pay)? That pay range is probably even larger for the club. The best a club can do is ask to see formal offers (could still be bullshit), ask the agent (definitely bullshit) or ask a rival club (at best as clueless, at worst actively sabotaging). I think the league issues data for indicative values but when it comes from someone going from a “rookie” deal to a potential Origin deal, there’s no data for that.

OT - f**ken hell this site is garbage sometimes. Spend too long writing reply and the site refreshes and deletes what you wrote.

It’s all about the $$$. It’s a win win for reed no matter what. I’m sure we’ll have to pay thru the roof to keep him.

No we just have to come close to the $650K offer that the Dogs have tabled him. Which by the way is quite a fair offer for a guy that is in the top 3 of his position and coming into his best years. Also if he improves just a little on what he already has produced, which is a very distinct possibility considering his age, he could be the best dummy half in the game and would be on unders by at least $200K.
