Found this article quite interesting, coaches don't like the administration of our game much.

NRL Survey Part I: Coaches question push to increase use of technology

The NRL’s head and assistant coaches have given their views on the game’s biggest issues - and it’s fair to say opinions are far from unanimous.

NRL coaches have joined the chorus of frustrated rugby league fans calling for an end to the transfer madness that has marred the off-season.
In an exclusive poll conducted by The Daily Telegraph with NRL head coaches and assistants, to be revealed over the next two days, the overwhelming majority have supported action to end the contracting circus.
More than 30 coaches responded to the survey. Of those, nearly 80 per cent said the game needed to bring in transfer windows after an off-season in which more than a dozen NRL stars agreed to join rival clubs in 2023.

The Daily Telegraph understands they also failed in a bid to sign Storm youngster Jack Howarth, a rising star who has since signed an extension to stay in Melbourne.
Parramatta was also picked apart as Reed Mahoney, Marata Niukore, Isaiah Papali’i and Ray Stone signed deals with rival clubs for 2023.
The NRL has been exploring the potential for transfer windows for some time and while they seemingly have the backing of the coaches, they would need the support of the players and their union to make it happen.
The good news is that Rugby League Players’ Association chief executive Clint Newton said he would be willing to listen to any proposals from the coaches.
“There has been no further discussion on it outside of initial conversations over the last couple of years, but we’ll maintain an open mind,” Newton said.
“There are several questions for coaches, starting with what does a transfer window actually look like?
NRL coaches are almost united in fixing the current contract madness plaguing the game.

NRL coaches are almost united in fixing the current contract madness plaguing the game.
“Is it for just players in the final year of their current contract? Can a player on a multi-year deal put themselves up or can only clubs decide? When do players go into the window?
“It is great to have an understanding that coaches see a transfer window as an opportunity for change but so many questions remain unanswered.
“How does it benefit the game without dissolving the rights of the players and their ability to operate in a free labour market?
“All of that needs to be answered, all the while still agreeing to the current restraints of a salary cap.
“We would love to get a collective position from the coaches and work through it together given the respect we have for them and how important they are to the game.”

The coaches were divided on the use of technology for forward passes, an option that the NRL is investigating.
They were in agreement, however, over the bunker with 100 per cent of those polled saying its powers should not be expanded.
Significantly, they indicated there was a disconnect between head office and the coaching ranks – 71 per cent said they were not consulted enough by the NRL.
“It is never good when key stakeholders like coaches feel like they are not being consulted,” NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo said.

Contracted players who have signed with a rival club for 2023 season

- Jesse Bromwich: Storm (2022) to Dolphins (2023)
- Kenny Bromwich: Storm to Dolphins
- Josh Hodgson: Raiders to Eels
- Jamayne Isaako: Broncos to Dolphins
- Felise Kaufusi: Storm to Dolphins
- Oregon Kaufusi: Eels to Sharks
- Villiame Kikau: Panthers to Bulldogs
- Api Koroisau: Panthers to Tigers
- Luciano Leilua: Tigers to Cowboys
- Reed Mahoney: Eels to Bulldogs
- Luke Metcalf: Sharks to Warriors
- Mark Nicholls: Rabbitohs to Dolphins
- Marata Niukore: Eels to Warriors
- Isaiah Papali’i: Eels to Tigers
- Brandon Smith: Storm to Roosters
- Ray Stone: Eels to Dolphins

“Clearly we need to address it, if that is how they feel. I am somewhat surprised because our football team did a very comprehensive process at the end of last year in terms of end-offootball-season reviews where all the coaches, GMs of football and other club delegates were invited to give quite meaningful feedback.
“That is what ultimately made its way up to the commission. We certainly have respect for and really value the views of coaches.

“So if they don’t feel like they are being supported and they don’t feel like they are being consulted enough, that is something we need to work on.
“But it is certainly not that we are deliberately not doing it. I know previously we had the coaches meeting once a year so maybe we need to think about the right mechanism and right forum to allow them to provide their feedback.”

Been watching some matches from 2019 on NRL and gee we had a team with some truly poor players such as Taka, Evans, Morera, Salmon, Hoffman, Mannah, Alvaro, Terepo and probably a few more I can't remember. Not sure how we finished 4th with a third of the squad being those players. Compare those players with what we have now and we're worlds apart in the quality of the squad. Good year coming up imo, should be top 4 easily but as usual the 'experts' don't even mention us.

Our NSW cup squad looks strong and full of guys who are either up and a few interesting project players. Years ago I felt the issue was to many just older guys in there who where never going to be anything more then good for the odd game or two. Yes they here experienced but it just isn't how id shape a squad.
Yes it is fine to have a few like that in NSW cup but I'd like the bulk to be younger up and comers or project style players or guys looking for a 2nd chance.

If fit our nrl side most likely has Jnr,Rheed,Rcg,Papa,Marata,Brown and on the bench Bryce,Matto,Lane,Stone.

In this case our NSW CUP pack will look like this

8 Greig
9 Rein
10 Kafusi
11
12 Rodwell
13

14 Hands
15 Makatoa
16 Ogden
17 Hollis

Unsure who ends up at 11 and 13 but there is 5 props who I feel could all play NRL this season and do a job. And 2 x hookers who id put in the same box.

The backline may look like this

1 Touipolutu
2 Loizou
3 Naiduki
4 Opacic
5 Russel
6 Perham
7 Arthur

With guys like Rankin and Sivo in the mix when fit.

Its a promising squad stacked with potential. Of course most womt amount to nothing but in law of average 2 or 3 of these guys will end up NRL level players.

There's a second roeer in NSW Cup called Elie el zakhem who is apparently an excellent prospect.

Also Jayden Yates I think is a backrower who has good reviews but I've never personally seen him play so not sure if he fits into the team

Anyhows this is what I like about either BA or whoever has made our squad look like this. It isn't something we could do overnight and has taken a few years.
The battle of the pecking order for our middles in NSW cupmis interesting. Id rank them right now as below

1. KAFUSI - He may explode this season. I don't think he has taken the next step however and his development has been slow. He will never be close to what Stefano will be. People on here play it down but Stefano by the end of season I genuinely think will be one of the best props in the game. I said the same about the vicous fish. Most laughed. Stefano is the real deal and will play for NSW.

2. GREIG - I feel he has the most potential of the lot. If he can remain fit and get some minutes he is an NRL level prop with a high ceiling. The most interesting of the bunch.

3. OGDEN - I liked him at the Dogs. Defense and fitness was an issue but if we sort that out he will be a very good pick up. He is 25 so a great age for a prop. I'd say too old the become elite level but he has been in a poor side where everyone looked bad. Can be a top 17 bench player for sure. And a guy who has impact.

4. Makatoa - We've seen what he does. Big motor who holds his own. Bit of a plodder and based in age I wouldn't give priority but can do a solid job when called upon.

5. Hollis - He starts last on the list but based on age and size I reckon along with Greig are the two guys who would have most potential long term. Many seem not to rate Hollis but I think he glides across the park in defense which is good. Has a huge motor. Just needs to improve strength a little which can come down to genetics and may not be possible. If he does however I reckon he will have a long career. Power is the only thing that will hold him back.

I agree with it all.

I rate Hollis highly.
