The Titans have made a significant commitment in their salary cap recently. The cost is measured in players lost, but only if you can see past the superstar.

Certainly.

Kelly was tipped by many to move into first grade after the departure of Mead and McDonald. Certainly had shown enough based on his performances for their Under 20's and the NSW NYC Origin side. I think he even played for the Junior Kangaroos.

Their losses have been significant though as well - Bird, McDonalnd, Mead, Douglas, Shillington, Burr, Cullen and Mortimer. A real clean out.

Guessing though that the big money shelled out for Peats, Hurrell, Proctor and Hayne would have to bite somewhere.

Don't forget Hoffman.

I think though that the Titans were probably at the point in their build/rebuild that they were ready to spend big money on a player like Hayne. I'm keen to see how they go next year. They still seem to have a strong squad, despite the players they've let go.

TBH while there are many names there i dont think they are great losses to them ... mcdonald would have been handy to keep, but replacable .... experience lost but better to cut aging dudes early than too late

He did, and did the same thing at the Dragons. Hasler did likewise at Manly and looks to be doing the same thing at the Dogs.

Maybe the 'best' coaches don't leave clubs in a better condition than when they found them after all.
Maybe the best coaches know when to get out before the shit goes down???

My biggest issue with the Ponga deal, for the knights, is when they try to sign an established first grader for unders/minimum price. They will get laughed out of the room after this deal.

Or pay triple that for a player who has played 2 games of first grade.

The likes of Sio, Starling and Kostjasyn are hardly genuine first graders. Sio is probably the more accomplished of the three and is in a position the Knights have abundance of. THe other two haven't really nailed down a first grade position at any club to be considered genuine. Buhrer is probably the only one of their recruits who has been playing regular first grade.

I understand why the Knights are taking the gamble BUT I don't consider that the odds on this gamble are very good in favour of the Knights. If I was Ponga I would have taken the deal as well. I just think it reeks of desperation and could very well hamper what could be a very good career before it even starts.

They may as well take the gamble on a young player. Lets be honest, 600k a year is 200k less than Corey Norman money (for example). So he only has to be around that level of player for it to be a bargain over 3-4 years. Given Ponga has the kind of talent Jarryd Hayne had IMO, I reckon it's a pretty good gamble.

A club like Newcastle, struggling as they are, is always going to have to splash big money to get quality players. May as well splash "quality first grader" money on the best junior in years rather than elite money on a quality first grader. Again, IMO

People blame the Hayne deal, but really they're shifting players so they can lock up Ryan James long term and throw heaps at Proctor (mission accomplished). James has become an elite level front rower the last two seasons and Brisbane are throwing big money at him (freed up by the departure of Jarrod Wallace, obviously :p). They still have Zillman on a big money deal, they've signed Hayne, Peats, Hurrell mid season....some players were bound to move on for both squad and salary balance.

Honestly they haven't really lost much I'd be worried about as a fan. McDonald and maybe Hoffman were the ones potentially worth keeping, but they're only first grade quality outside backs. There are heaps of those. Burr and Mortimer, useless. Douglas, Bird and Shillington past it. Mead is nothing special and Cullen is unproven and the odd man out when you have Roberts, Taylor and Elgey on contract. Not sure why muppets like phantomBart get so worked up over the "massive" amount of players being moved on to "accommodate Hayne". Looks like a good quality rebuild to me...

Yeah. They'd told 14 players from memory that they were unwanted, well before Hayne. Hoffman included. Jayne sells though.

My point was that they were looking to young players like Cartwright and Kelly to replace the players they had let go. Kelly was talked up as being someone who would have an opportunity now those players had left and now they have released him to Manly. It's quite odd to see them both released now....

Not really blaming the Hayne deal. It just appears an odd decision to release these players at this time of the year.

The major open spots for the Titans are on their left wing and on the bench. Brian Kelly is a player the club has been excited about for some time and he’ll compete with John Olive and Greg Leleisiuao to get a run on the pick and swing.

There were a few rumours suggesting that we had signed Greg Leleisiuao as well.

Certainly a big rebuild going on but given everyone that had been let go and the fact they had not played much first grade you wouldn't expect them to be on big money.

I do understand the James contract would be concerning them but still doesn't make much sense.
