Eels halfback Mitchell Moses is set to spark a transfer window frenzy as he prepares to test his value on the open market.
Parramatta half Mitchell Moses is set to spark a transfer window frenzy as he prepares to head to market on November 1.

Moses, fresh from leading the Eels to the grand final, is expected to test his value after a handful of clubs expressed interest in signing the NSW star.

His decision could yet have ramifications for his deputy Jake Arthur, who is Moses’ understudy at Parramatta. His father, Parramatta coach Brad Arthur, insisted his son didn’t need to leave the club to realise his potential given he is not only stuck behind Moses, but also five-eighth Dylan Brown.

That could change if Moses opts to take the big bucks on offer elsewhere.
“He is still young, he still has plenty of time,” Brad Arthur said.

“He will go back next year and play (NSW) Cup. He is there as back-up to Mitchell and Dylan. His role moving forward — he needs to be playing 80 minutes.

“He will go back and play Cup and enjoy his footy. If he gets an opportunity he will come up and try to do his job. But he is not Dylan and he is not Mitchell — he has to be Jake.Jake Arthur was the target of heavy criticism at times this season but Brad insists his son will be better for the experience.

“In a couple of years time he will be better for it,” he said.

“Not many young players come into the game and have to go through the pressure he has been under. He is only going to be better for it.

“He knows that coming into the footy world with his surname - people see it as an advantage for him but it is not, it is a disadvantage.”

stfu you dopey merkin. Only you placed the pressure on him.

if this clown is admitting he’s a back up half, why was he on the bench most weeks, including the gf?

One can’t help but think, Ba would be much happier if Moses leaves, to promote his son.

So JA is a top 17 player, has had clubs chasing him throughout the year and been significantly disadvantaged because his dad wouldn’t pick him sometimes, yet he chose to stay for us on a cheap minimum wage deal?

This is music to my ears.

Not only does it let JA go back to cup and work on his game. It allows another player to possibly make the bench spot his.

Well those combo's are already here, and we have 4-5 spots to fill.

I think Klemmer would probably cost too much, unless you're going to give him around 50 minutes a week, which he might struggle to get with RCG, Paulo, Matterson, and Hopgood all probably playing long minutes, so he probably doesn't offer value. If we played Klemmer for 50 minutes, that only leaves 190 minutes for all of those 4. Although all 5 playing an average of 48 minutes each would surely be beneficial for us (with Matterson probably starting on the Right Edge, but Murchie coming on after 20 minutes and Matterson moving to the middle).

I think Taupau to play 30 minutes either side of half time, for probably half the cost of Klemmer, probably provides the value we need. That gives 210 minutes for the other 4, with again I can see Matterson playing both Right Edge and in the middle next season.
Hopgood will play 80 each week so no need to replace him. We need to train how we play for next year if we're to beat Panthers. Need fast line speed, fast line speed, fast line speed.

We don't have the forwards to produce that.

Junior, Hodgson, Lane and Matto won't exactly bring fast line speed.

I suppose if Nathan Brown is still here let's get him fit again. He has had a number of off-season surgeries in past few years. If he didn't have any this year let's get him fit and firing. He is playing for a contract at another club for 2024 so he should be playing for his football life.

Which has been most of our problems all season, 5 mins off the bench each week is doing him no favours either.

Some glaring concerns from this year..
- bench rotation again was horrible
- potential to give players some more matches/game time but persisted with Makatoa who he dropped in the end anyway. Why wasn't more time given to Greig, Ogden and Rodwell. You can't say Makatoa was killing it.
- majority of the season we played with 16 players. There was enough versatility to have nuikore, Matto, Cartwright to move into a backs position
- The promotion of JA and moving the best 5/8 in the competition at the time to centre was one epic fail. There were stacks of blokes like Russell, Cini, Perham etc who wouldve been better suited in the outside backs than shifting Dylbro. Yes Perham did play a few games of wing and probably unfairly criticised. He's been released regardless.
Clubs do seek special dispensation to promote someone outside of the top 30 if there is a need to do so.

The signings of Hodgson, Hopgood and Murchie are very good. These guys will add to our team. Been a Murchie fan since at Canberra and went on loan to the Warriors. Runs very good lines. Good motor and will be coming into his prime.
Hopgood is very good.
Hodgson if he stays fit will not only help our team but the halves as well.
Reads the game very well and always scheming. He will add a new dimension to our attack.

We still have plenty of money to splash around especially when you consider Nathan Brown’s $550k contract and strong likelihood that he won’t be with us in 2023.

Or will that money be used for upgrades in 2023 at least to Moses/D Brown?

He most likely won't be with us.
We most likely will be paying 200-250k. I can't see a yone offering N.Brown more then 250k tbh. He will only leave if he could land a 2-3yr deal. He will make 550k if he stays. I imagine eh would get 500k for 2yrs or 700k for 3yrs elsewhere. So what's in it for him? If we put in 200k and he gets himself a 2yr deal effectively he gets 150k extra for his 2nd year and the chance of NRL footy and a possible lifeline for a 3rd year.
Foolish to think we wouldn't have to chip in atleast 200k.

But it still would free up 300-350k and that works for us also. Could sign a hot young up and come for that.

So Hodgson won't play 80, and Jake is going to play Reserve Grade, what are we planning on doing for 10-15 minutes each week when Hodgson is off the field?

Season starts in 6mths. I imagine we are searching and will add a utility. Worse case is Rein.
Hands and Yates didn't seem to make much of a dent in NSW CUP. Unsure what the club does with them in regards to signing for 2023 etc.

I reckon he is 100-1 to be here come start of season. Not only do we want him out but I reckon he wants out himself.

Penriths fast line speed is a weapon but fast defensive lines speed has been around since the Storm become successfull. Maybe the last 20yrs. Perhaps longer. I remember when we had D.Pay and McCracken we would bash teams with our brutal defense.

Their system works cause of a whole combination of things.
They have a back 5 who are all wrecking balls or can break tackles.
Too,May, Tago. They run straight and hard with as much power as any forward. Edwards just breaks tackles and Crighton is no slouch.

When you average about 75 runs from your back 5 a game think of the advantage of these hard runners.
We have
Gutherson - Skilfull but powerless
Waqa - Nice feet and speed but lacks power
Opacic/ Simmonsons = Weak
Penisini - Strong but young so dominated half the time.
Sivo - Genuine power runner but can be lazy.

So with these powerfull charges it saps your energy. Don't underestimate the difference of tackling hard runners compared to pillows. It take more effort.
Then Nathan just kicks you to death and the forwards are fresh. They are hardly super human.

Gutherson and Penisini are going nowhere. So if we plan to fix things we need to get Sivo taking more runs and find a new centre and wing.
Untill we get those strong carries from every back we never will have the energy to generate this fast line speed for 80mins.
Good backs need to have one of two things. Ridiculous speed, footwork and skill that make defenses miss tackles or just straight out and out raw power. Like your Brian Too or Moses Suli etc.

There isn't a place in modern NRL for guys like Opacic or Simmonson unless 4 of the other 5 backs can cover their work in attack.
Our best side under BA was 2017. And that backline had Semi,Jennings,Takarangi and Bevan in it alongside Gutherson.
Sure Taka and Bevan had weaknesses but both created nightmares for the defense. If you think Opacic,Blake and Simmonson give defenses the same concern you're kidding yourself.

Hard to argue with any of that to be honest. We do need to get more out of our back 5, there doesn't seem to be anyone in the club currently that will solve the problem.

Dunster was making decent metres because he changed his running style and was less upright. He could do a decent job for us. Sean Russell could do the same. The reason why Blake and Simonsson get driven back and to a lesser extent Sivo is because they run too upright.

It’s not always just about power, it’s about coaching and line speed and making the opposition play under fatigue. When that happens even Luke Burt made metres.
