are you sure we are not paying any freight ? if we are it has plenty to do with us
For him to break his contract with us, we would have reached a settlement with him being somewhere near the difference between the balance of his contract with us, and the amount of his new contract with Roosters. We would then have paid him out that amount and it would go on our revised Cap for 2023. At this point, our existing contract with him is either null and void or alternatively a new contract is signed for the remainder of the year (there would need to be changes to a number of the terms).
He would then sign a contract with the Roosters and any issues with that contract dont have anything to do with us.
When people say we are "paying freight", it actually means we still have a contract in place with that player for whatever term is agreed, however it is revised to be of a lesser value than the original one. The losing club doesnt pay the gaining club... they continue to pay the player the new amount and declare the payment on their Cap. The gaining club simply has a contract with the player for less than they would otherwise and therefore declare less on their Cap (and have money available to spend elsewhere). The NRL allows the revised contract for the losing cluub to also free up a place in their playing squad.
