Do you think Haas was wrestling?
Haas was out of position to make the tackle. Reg was 1 on 1 with a smaller man (at pace) and would have scored. The only way for Haas to get back into position was to lunge with his body off his feet, and from behind, hoping to crush Reg's momentum with his body weight to stop the try.
Haas didn't mean to injure him, and wasn't trying to be dirty. But it is still a tackle that needs to be removed from the game. Hopgoods was somewhat similar (not as desperate or at pace - but he left his feet to stall momentum).
This is like the head high crackdown from years back. It worked.
Players know what they need to do, and need to adjust their technique accordingly.
If Reg scores that try because Haas chooses not to drop his hip, then so be it. It becomes a defensive decision - Haas had the option of marking Reg a step earlier, but that may have left the ballplayer 1 on 1.
In the end, these lunge and hip drops stall momentum close to the line, true, but should they? If the options are more injuries or more tries, as a fan I know what I choose
