I don’t assume anyone knows exactly what Waqa is on, but the only evidence (albeit flimsy) is that he is on decent coin. I just don’t think multiple media outlets would be that far off the mark. Sure, a bit of exaggeration but they start to lose credibility if they’re too far off the mark too often. That would hurt their bottom line.

It's not at all uncommon for media outlets to use other media outlets as sources, so all it takes for multiple media outlets to be wrong, is for one to be wrong and then be used as a source by others.

I would doubt once a players' deal is published by one, it'd be given much if any scrutiny by anyone else in the media. So that would then stand as written. It's far less effort to accept it as fact ( or close enough ) than it is to try and verify.

Personally I think the best indicator that Waqa was on too much coin, at least from Penrith's cap perspective, was that they shopped him and paid some of his freight for years.

OK finally. Now that we all agree that Waqa is on at least $550K, what a balls up our recruitment and retention committee have made of our outside backs.

Lets hope that at their gazillionth attempt they get it right.

No no no. Everyone knew Waqas potential. No demand.
DWZ got 800k at the Dogs. Waqa got 250k

Huh, I don't see agreement on that at all, but let's for a moment assume it is, given it was reported the contract he signed when moving from Penrith was until the end of 2023, was reported at 450k/season, and was reported Penrith were going to be paying him through that contract, how much do you reckon Waqa is costing us on the cap?

Depends if we balanced it out over the 4.5yrs or kept him cheap for first 3. If so then probably 500k this season. If not then 350k range.

It really doesn't matter how it's structured though over the years of the contract, as the value of the contract needs to be looked at over the complete contract. I dare say whatever Penrith's contribution was/is, they would have wanted structured in a manner that works for their cap management. So they may have negotiated their payout to fall where they needed it, at the end of the day, the entire cost of the contract to both clubs is what it is.

So if done as you say there, he doesn't offer value now for sure, but has been value for the first three years, so overall it's not a poor result.

It's also worth noting that regardless of what he is on this year, we still have money left to spend in the cap, so it's not like that final year at an inflated price would then be hurting us cap wise ( or if so not all that much ).

There's a lot of argy bargy over Waqa who is finishing up with us on 31/10. Not sure why. Who are you going to beef about then ?

Oh, did you know that Moimosea is on $700k. I know right ? <insert red face>

Yes yes agreed. We all agree, he is being paid way to much at around $550K a season and thank goodness he is off our books at the end of 2023. Now what do we do with his money, any suggestions? All good ideas are most welcome.

Found this in the paper today.

Wasnt aware of this but apprantley the courier mail Peter Badel was a diehard Parramatta supporter growing up.

And created his own eels website back in 1995.

Clearly has dropped off the wagon these days and is a broncos man isn't he now.

DWZ can play fullback and make 200m on the wing. Blake can’t. And also he turned 25 the year we signed him. Four years older than Penisini is this year. That’s what potential looks like, not a solid NRL player in his mid-20s.

In fairness to him, like players and coaches who might have supported other teams in the past, he needs to support who his employer does, and that has been the Broncos, although I suspect they're split between them and the Dolphins now.

It will never happen, but throw that cash at Jake Averillo - young, fast, great foot work, and can play anywhere in the outside backs.

It's really exciting to see how Penisini will develop - he's already in the top 5 centres on the game, imo.

Penrith were entitled to spread their payout figure over as many years as they wanted. It didn't mean we suddenly had to pay more when their payments stopped. Two separate contracts. From the player's point of view, he only cares about getting his money across the length of the original deal.

So if he was on $450k at Penrith, over four years, that's $1.8M until 2023, plus whatever upgrade they frontloaded into his existing 2019 portion.

If he was then required to leave (in mid-2019) to free up space for Crichton, To'o and the rest, he might've found he could get $350k from Parra for the remaining four years (2020-2023). He would then only be out of pocket by $400k. Penrith could then have agreed to pay it, and they were free to spread it over as many years as they liked (e.g. 2020: $125k, 2021: $125k, 2022: $150k). Meanwhile our deal with the player was whatever was agreed between us. There's no reason we'd have to suddenly pay more because Penrith's payout had ended.
