The Parramatta Eels are pleased to announce Bailey Simonsson, Josh Hodgson and Daejarn Asi have extended their contracts until the end of 2024, while Matt Doorey has extended until the end of 2025.

Parramatta Eels General Manager of Football Mark O’Neil said, “We’re incredibly proud of all four players, not just for their hard work and dedication, but also their wonderful character off the field.

“Bailey has settled well within our environment and his performances have been very good.

“Josh has a unique ability to communicate the technical aspects of the game and his experience and leadership skills have helped with the development of many other players, Brendan Hands in particular.

“Daejarn is a quality young utility who has added depth in the halves and has most recently played a valuable role in our NRL team.

“An Eels Junior returning to the club, Matt Doorey has a great opportunity in the team, with his best football still ahead of him,” said Mark.

For how many games? He may prove me wrong but I reckon he’s just one of those players who wants to play fullback simply for the pay increase, I don’t think he’ll actually make a good fullback.

Sure you maybe right, but that is what they have bought him for. But my impression is that he will be ok there. How good, not sure, but I have a feeling that he will be at the very least ok, but with time might actually turn out to be quite good.

thanks. Not a great deal between them except hands runs a little more and hodgo loves giving away penalties. I’m sure he’s responsible for a few 6 agains too. So much for his leadership.
This is just proof Hodgson knows how to slow the ruck. He’s been doing it for years. Penalties only show the times he didn’t get away with it.

The missed tackle comparison is considerable and I’d like to also see the ineffective tackle stats.
Errors per minute are very different between the two as well. The difference in per-run line breaks and tackle breaks also shows the difference between an experienced player picking his moments and a rookie padding his stats. Obviously only one of them has a kicking game.

Not to mention the first half of games is typically scrutinised more so than second halves (the so called ‘feeling out period’).

He has also given away some obvious fatigue penalties but you could say that about a heap of players.

Parra are a very tight arse run organisation with MON in charge of the player finances. I can't see him paying full freight for a player that will always be a benchy kind of player who has few minutes.
Nah I think what happened is obvious. We refused to match the Tigers’ massive offer for Papali’i, then saw they had a player supposedly on even more money and thought, we want to pay this guy as much as Wests are paying him. How can we make it happen yesterday?!?

He also said multiple times he didn’t expect you to believe him.

Then had a tanty when you didn’t believe him.
What I think is feasible is that the Tigers have paid him his entire 2023 contract this year to compensate him for loss of 2024 and 2025 earnings. Meanwhile our contract with the player includes a significant component this year, as well as reasonable amounts for ‘24-‘25.

This would mean he’s not on the Tigers’ books in future years, allowing one to think we are “paying full freight”, when the reality is that the Tigers are paying him in full this year to not play for them. Since we are also paying him this year, he is essentially subsidised in future years.

Nah I think what happened is obvious.

Let’s say Tiger5150 is correct in saying we matched his Tigers deal without their organisation paying a cent in letting him go. I’ll speculate based off Tiger5150’s statement that he is on 450k this year and 600k for the following two.

The ONLY way I see this is plausible is this:

He has been heavily front-loaded by Parramatta. Don’t forget, as soon as he put pen to paper, the re-signing of Moses was announced.

Around half the NRL calendar year was gone at the time of his move, so let’s say 250k was remaining.

We front-loaded this year and he is on the books in ‘23 for 600k (this would be huge coin and equate to 1.2m p.a).

This would equate to 400k for next year and the following.

It’s plausible, and has weight when taking into account the timing of the signature of Moses.

Plausible, yet still unlikely. The club should be applauded for their roster management for some time.

They wouldn’t bend the cap out of line for a middle forward when we have three (and almost four in Hopgood) representative forwards on the books for someone like Ofahengaue.

It is a lot of money to pay for someone who has never played fullback consistently at NRL level.
The same thing happened with Mitchell at Souths. He’s shown he can play at fullback, and at least will get plenty of ball. I suspect he will deal better with the workload than Latrell has.

Are you sure this is how it works? I’m of the belief that players can be paid out 1c under the top 30 minimum wage and not be on the books.

In essence, Ofahengaue could be paid $119,99.99 for 2024 and 2025 and not affect their cap, hence ‘full freight’.
