I don’t think there’s much doubt that BA has got the best out of a lot of players that have come through our club. Yep sure there’s a couple who he didn’t but his strike rate is pretty impressive.

I’m not only referring to “turds” or rough diamonds either. Many of our higher profile players have played their best footy under him. There’s things I think BA can be criticised on, bench rotations come to mind, but getting the best out of his players isn’t one of them.

Well it depends what you mean by turd. If a bloke doesn't have potential no amount of polishing will get him to achieve anything. Is the turd the player without potential or the player who hasn't reached his potential?

As Pou said, all these players must have shown some sort of promise to have made it as far as they have, and at certain times they may have achieved that promise.

Maybe we can look at a bog average player like Todd Lowrie, who was never going to be a star, but had one or two years where he looked like a decent first grade player. I can see Doorey and Murchie maybe accomplishing the same. Whether it will happen, who knows.
But so far I think we are getting to that point with both Greig, Ogden and even Simonssen who is playing some decent footy at times now.

This illustrates my point. Papallii was never shit. Papalii was much better than Doorey as evidenced by his performances at a young age in first grade at the Warriors.

Niukore has always been a better player than Murchie. Niukore was never a turd. Murchie is still a turd.

Jake Arthur is also still turd quality. I doubt Seibold will be improving him either.

I hadn't heard of them before, but then worked out it was Sam Ayoub when I looked them up. Looking at their players, it is interesting that they have:

Junior
Andrew Davey
Blake Ferguson
Jaemon Salmon
Joey Lussick
Kane Evans
Waqa Blake
Reed Mahoney

All players, except for Junior, who started their rugby league journey elsewhere before coming to Parra.

Interestingly enough they also have Nofoaluma and Cotric...

Sure, but at the other end of the spectrum we haven’t exactly gone out and bought star players into the club from elsewhere.

Maybe some would consider Moses in that category, but on the other hand plenty others would have called him incredibly inconsistent and a downhill skier (they still do).

I think BA has done well to get what he has out of these players. Under him Moses, Paulo, Gutherson and Matterson became Origin players.RCG was on the origin scrap heap, but is now back.

Hopgood is now a fringe origin player and Lane was close just a season ago. Papalii and Mahoney became good enough they got big money offers from other clubs. Carty playing the best footy of his career.

So when it’s said that BA can ‘polish a turd’ I don’t think it’s meant so literally, taking actual shit players and making them good. More that he can help players realise their potential. Not all players have gotten there, but there aren’t many players who have gone backwards under BA
