I think most contracts increase yearly and are at its highest during the last year of the contract.

The clubs do this to plan for cap increases and the players like it as it is a starting point for contract negotiations if the player extends or wants to test themselves on the open market. It’s a great mechanism if the player maintains their form or goes to the next level.

It worked for Moses but not for Blake. Didn’t work for Nathan Brown either. That’s why many clubs either have to keep paying players overs or move them on and pay some of the freight. Sometimes it works out well with a player like Jennings in the first few years but then you are left with a big chunk if nobody wants him if he falls off a cliff with form and nobody wants him. This is what happened with Blake. As soon as we started paying full freight his career went off a cliff and nobody now wants him.

The point is recovering from a game in Townsville in July is going to be quicker than recovering from a game in September. Otherwise the Cowboys would lose most away games every year. The fact is they also have a poor record backing up from finals matches in Townsville. They actually go better backing up from Sydney finals. It’s the wrong time of year to be playing up there.
