Rumours and Stuff

You do need to ask why the Storm are happy to let him go..

Well if he can't make NRL anymore considering one of the Storms weaknesses is their backline, well something definitely is up. So unless we know exactly what it is and feel it wouldn't be a problem for us to rectify and considering his age now, I would be very hesitant to take him on.

We need a centre/wing that is in their prime or coming into it, not someone that maybe on the way down and out.

We need to cut as much deadwood as possible this off season and only recruit player that are better then what we currently have or are juniors that have a way higher potential ceiling, like the Roosters will be doing.

They already have got the jump on us for next season by the acquisition of Spencer Leniu and Dominic Young. Two players that would have transformed our roster for next year and who are exactly what we currently need. Spencer only cost $525K a season, which is a bargain for a player like him. Dominic will be on $500K, the same we paid for Fergo, so we do and should pay that sort of money for quality that we currently don't have and desperately need.

But we can only do that if we are ruthless and recognise just like the Roosters do that you can't win tittles by holding on to dead wood that will never flower or has dried up or is drying up and needs to be pruned.

How we can sign Offy and Davey for example which I'm sure if you combine both salaries would be around $500K if not more and not pursue Leniu who I'm sure would have looked at Parra quite favourably considering that we are basically next door to the Panthers compared to the Rooster and he would have mates here and the social dynamic and environment would be way more similar to the Panthers then the Roosters too. I reckon we would have had a great attraction for him as opposed to the Eastern Suburbs.

Anyway, what is done is done. We can't go back. We just need to hopefully wakeup and realise that buying a heap of average to plodders may give you depth, but in the long run will not win you a premiership. You need to have genuine NRL standard players.

We went into this years premiership with a sub par Hooker issue(gambling on a injury prone veteran). Also a winger and centre weakness that everyone could see that was just a ticking time bomb waiting to happen, much like our hooker situation really. And also we needed to sure up our frontrow with a quality third palooka.

We almost got lucky with Emu showing some signs of life and quality but then he went down, so who knows really how good he will be and will he kick on or not to be a genuine and reliable middle that can eventually take over the front row leadership group. That is a big ask, but that's what we need from him or otherwise he will be just another mediocre middle and we will eventually need to look elsewhere for someone to eventually take poll position over Junior, which by the looks of things maybe in a year or two at best.

Like many here have been saying, Potato Head will burn out our middles way sooner then they should be by the way he plays them with no real other support. Look at the Panthers, they developed outside backs that take that many hitups and relieve their palookas from that much grunt work that they should never experience burnout. We needed to be way smarter with our recruitment at least 2-3 years ago and sourced at least one other gorilla back, but we didn't.

Lets hop that someone at head office has an epiphany and realises all of the above and actually has the ruthless balls to do something about it. To sit there in the off season and say my hands are tied, we just don't have the cap space anymore is just not acceptable. At the very least we should somehow recruit a centre or winger that is a genuine metre eater or shit hot speedster that isn't a liability in defense.

Who, well there are players in every club that if your recruitment is up to it can persuade to break contracts just like happens all the time. Will you always be successful? Hell no, but give it a red hot crack ffs!!

Of course if our nursery was producing players the way it should have been doing(who's fault is that I wonder?), we probably wouldn't have these problems and we would now be sitting in the top 4 looking forward to blitzing every other team including the Panthers, who I think are very beatable if there was a genuine top quality roster out their with finals experience. Only the Broncos are a real quality roster besides the Panthers, but they may still be a little to green to beat such an experienced and high quality coached team like the Panthers. The Cowboys are almost there but they would need a lot of things go their way and maybe, but probably not.

Souths are busted and I can't see them really reversing all their issues. So that's it. There is no one else that could or will come close.

We on the other hand could have if we had addressed our issues properly before the season started. It is such a wasted season again too, considering how well Cartwright has flourished this season. He is an upgrade on Papalii in both offence and defense. He would have been a massive weapon for us had we got our weaknesses sorted like we should have. What a crying shame.

The run will do him good as a taste of what's ahead of him in his career, if he's keen to lock in and do the work required.

Not sure what we do this week in that backline position exposing AMS against the Broncos...? If we have enough edge forwards available I'd be tempted to move one of our starters wider and bring up a big from/to the bench.
It's hard to see either AMS or Russell defending Cobbo. Although Arthurs probably won't play, so the Broncs will probably give Mariner a go, which would be a much easier defensive target for AMS than Ravalawa

I might be the only person that thinks this, but I genuinely believe that we will be better next year and maybe even win the premiership. Next year's top 4 contest will be alot tighter than this year, with the Panthers, Roosters, Eels, Storm and Cowboys all contenders for the minor premiership (allthough Penriths depth means that they should still finish first), with teams like the Broncos, Sharks, Raiders and a healthy Manly team all battling for the other top 8 spots. If the eels can manage to finish comfortbaly in the top 4 (which I believe we are very capable of), a week off before the finals will do us a world of good, and potentially setting us up for a Grand Final Apperance.
That prediction was horrible with hindsight
Out of all our losses, I think Niukore will be the hardest to replace, due to his versitility, and being a very strong starter/bench player.
I think this is still true, although we have good bench players/borderline starters (Greig and Ofa), we haven't found someone that can cover the fowards + centres, nor replace his combination of attacking strike and defensive consistency.
Ipap will be missed as well, with his attacking presence contributing to alot of line breaks (although some of his defence efforts particulary later in the season were very disappointing).
I now genuinely believe that Ipap leaving was a blessing, as Cartwright has filled that spot fantastically, for a fraction of what Ipap was asking for. Also the defence part was spot on, Ipap has really struggled this year.
But the signings of Hopgood and Hodgeson (if he stays fit and plays like he did in 18-20) excite me alot, with Mahoneys deffiencies in ball running and engaging the markers being fixed by Hodgesons addition (again if he stays fit).
I'd say that Hands has shown signs of great ball running, although his defense can certainly improve (although for a rookie hooker forced to play 80 minutes a week he's been bloody good)
Hopgood appears to be a very exciting prospect and is certainly NRL ready, with his post contact running and defence efforts filling in the hole left by Ipap, although he may not see as much game time this year as I would like.
I was spot on here. He's been given a lot more minutes than I originally thought he would receive,
Though it will be interesting to see who else we sign over the off-season, with another outside back needed to replace Opacic, and more explosive fowards to fill out the bench and reserves.
Again spot on in the first part. Greig, Ogden and Makatoa have all been good this year, and I think Doorey with another off season will be an absolute weapon.
That being said my biggest worry is that we will suffer to make metres in the big games, as we did in the GF this year, as we have a tendancy to be rolled by other packs when we aren't at our best, leaving us reliant on a good Moses kick. That being said, heres hoping for a successful 2023!
Right on the money, apart from the Penrith game earlier in the year, our pack has gone missing in key moments.

This was fun looking back almost a year on. Please reply with your thoughts on this season vs your expectations.

He's not a backup, he is a utility. He has played 19 games, in every position except halfback and fullback: https://www.nswrl.com.au/players/nsw-cup/parramatta-eels-nsw-cup/jirah-momoisea/

Hardly wasting a spot when we haven't even filled our top 30.

I don't think Davey is a backup. He played one game in reserve grade and has played every NRL game since, most of them as a starter: https://www.parraeels.com.au/teams/nrl-premiership/parramatta-eels/andrew-davey/

At full strength he would no doube be on the bench, but I think he is locked into our top 17.

He'll play if we need him, but like all backups, you hope you don't need them.

Our offer is based on what we think he's worth, not what the Titans thought he was worth when they signed him. If they really want him gone they'll offer a payout.

I agree with the club. They know the details and we don't, so we'd be stupid to tell them they're wrong.

Davey would not be in the 17 at full strength.

You agree with the club who have not won a grand final since when...😂😂😂

Why would anyone offer him $650k in 2018? He was already 24 (close to his peak) and doing a decent job but hardly elite. More to the point, why would anyone offer Penisini so little in a world where not one but at least two clubs were willing to pay Blake $650k? Penisini is a legit gun already, and only going to get better. Blake was solid and already 24 years old. 24 + 5 = 29 and most outside backs are in decline by then. The oldest outside backs in Origin this year were Holmes and JAC (both turned 28 after Origin finished). Both were already guns (and Origin players) at 24, unlike Waqa Blake. I'm sorry but I don't believe your source. It's an urban myth.

What did you guys think of AMS yesterday? Personally, I'm sympathetic as the blokes a FB that has gone from Flegg to RG to FG in a season. Although I do believe that he needs to put on some muscle as he was getting steamrolled yesterday, and not just by Ravalawa.

I thought he did OK for a young bloke and he was very good under the high ball so you can see he's played a lot of fullback

he needs to bulk up that light frame of his if he's going to be an NRL player or he'll regularly get steamrolled
