I can't remember which show it was, maybe the Sunday Footy Show on that 10min footy talk they have, but they mentioned that Hayne would come back on around $800k under the salary cap and the rest would be TPAs.
And that sounds about right to me. If there is anyone in league that can get massive legal TPA's then I think it would be him with the public exposure he provides and the Eels being basically the No 1 supported league them in Sydney.
Especially so if we get the change of admin right for the first time ever, then I see mostly blue skies from then on in, both on and off the field.
So if that is indeed what Hayne would carry onto the salary cap, then we would be insane to not sign him no matter what position he settles on. But I hope that he is himself looking at playing in the halves and once again taking on a great challenge. The last time he tried it, he wasn't the massive failure that everyone here is bunging on about. He had some great touches and some wonderful moments. It just wasn't natural to him and there were times that he over played his hand.
Don't forget Lockyer took a full season of ups and downs to become the maestro that he became and people were calling for him to return to fullback and that Bennett had made the wrong call in persisting with that change. But Bennett remained firm. I consider Hayne to be a more talented player then Lockyer and as we all know, definitely a better defender.
No, I think it will all come down to the man himself. If he wants it and he really tries to master it, he will and in the process become the best in the world at it. Dare I say it, but it's a pity we don't have someone like Phil Gould as a consultant to work on Hayne. Brad Fitler has said many times that he credits Gus being his mentor that saw him over come his demons when transitioning from the centres to the halves.
Is Arthur that good? Has he the right stuff to get into the mind of a player like Hayne? Well we may get to see. Time will tell.
