Something is seriously wrong with our scouts/selectors. It started with signing Hodgson for 2 years??? Then came Murchie, Jirah, Doorey?? Then signing Davey as a starting second rower?? Hodgson was busted years ago and injured for a year before coming to Parra. The three stooges were useless reserve graders. Davey's 31 and never been a regular first grader. That's a lot of wasted cap space. We could of bought a premier forward and back?? I don't understand it.
We seem to think a premiership is around the corner with our existing team. We need good signings to win a premiership. Roosters would NEVER touch Harper or Davey. Not sure why we don't explore England? Should make a play for Welsby or Knowles.

Mate you need 20-25 backups that are not good enough to play first grade regularly at other club who also won't pressure the first grade players as they are average in reserve grade.

England is only worth it for forwards, most that come over here do somewhat well at least. Backs always seem to be a bust outside an exception or two, even Ryan Hall who was genuinely one of the better wingers when he was active was a dud for his time at the roosters, yet he somehow always played well against Australia in internationals.

He is, but Harper has played a lot more first grade. In fact by Cini's age he had his best ever NRL season, playing in that top four Manly side. Meanwhile Cini is still carving up in reserve grade. There must be something wrong with him, and it's not his attack. Neither is it his tackling ability, which was over 85% this year. In fact no club has given him a run in first grade since the Tigers when he was 21. Surely their standards aren't that low?

No you don’t. I’d say you’re overstating how much players like Davey and Doorey cost and understating how much a ‘premier forward’ (or back) would cost. The mean salary is about $400k, but the minimum is $120k. This means the difference between minimum and average salaries is only $280k. But the difference between average salary and the merkins at the top is $800k+

Even a bloke on $600k (maybe half the highest paid player) is on five times the minimum salary. It’s not the backups that stop you signing star players, it’s the other star players on your roster. You can only fit so many under the cap. You also need a dozen or more backup players. You can’t just sign 20 players and save yourself $1.2M to spend on a couple more stars.

Thinking about the Harper signing if it's only for 1 season it's probably a good signing with Dick and Blaize coming through in 2025.
