This is why I asked. Multiple articles read like Biondi-Oda was cut from the top 30 last year by the signing of Hoffman. Of course the lack of clarity and transparency keeps everyone guessing.

The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs have cut utility Bailey Biondi-Odo from their top 30 squad in favour of former Wests Tigers rookie Reece Hoffman.
Despite re-signing until the end of this season back in 2021, Biondi-Odo has seemingly been cut from Canterbury's top 30 as he continues to rehabilitate a torn ACL suffered in a hip drop tackle last September.
Well that indicates merkins can be removed just by making them the 31st highest paid player. Maybe they can? It would just mean the player can no longer play first grade at all. The club still has to pay him, but now it's outside the cap and he is no longer eligible for first grade.

Don't ask me how they would do this other then they have all the power and they pass the laws, but trust me if what I think is coming comes then they will have all the power to do just that. But lets all hope it doesn't come to that for all our sakes.
If they make it illegal plenty of people will drop it regardless of enforceability. This will reduce its value.

I wasn't talking about your talent scouting which I believe is actually really good - just the fact that you think the club doesnt actually see the same things.

In fact, I could probably name at least 3 current first grade players at other clubs that we approached when they were 17 or 18 years old and it probably isnt common knowledge we approached them. The problem is they each stayed at their junior club instead of moving interstate.

They think there's all these great players that a bunch of nuffies have noticed but none of the clubs have so the players must be cheap.

The top 30 and associated rules are beyond my comprehension mate. I thought it was the 30 players you pay the most so if a new player is paid more than the guy at position 30 its a matter of one in and one out.
I guess this could then complicate the second tier cap.
If thats not the case then is it simply an admission that we got it wrong and promoted and are paying too much to players we now dont rate?
Little wonder Seward got confused. 😁
Yes and no. There’s kind of two separate mechanisms.
There’s the NRL salary cap which essentially says a club needs to pay 30 players. There’s extra rules around cap limits, minimum salaries, minimum spend, etc, but yes usually it’s your 30 highest paid players.
But there is also contract law between club and player. My understanding is many lower tier contracts do allow for players to be removed from the designated NRL top 30, provided the player is no worse off.
Even if the contract doesn’t allow it, club and player can agree to amendments.

I can't think of to many big name players that have switched clubs this year.
Herbie,Fleggler, Spencer,Crighton,Brooks,Dom Young.
Who else? A lot of middle of the road players may of moved on but these days a lot of your higher profile guys are signed up long term already.

I dont have an issue with The Ram or Hindy talking up the players they like... it's a good use of the forum. My question was more to do with the assertion that the club doesnt see the same thing, which IMHO is unfounded given that we have a professional recruitment team that includes scouts in every major RL playing region, etc.
Just because they don't announce every player they approach doesnt mean they didn't approach or at least consider.

Yes I get it mate, but my assertion is that they are doing a piss poor job of it. Our club should be the number one or two destination clubs in this State. Since we seem to not be I believe that the people in charge aren't good enough to hold the posts that they do and no amount of talking which I call excuses is going to change my mind on that.

When was the last time they brought in a real talent junior from outside our catchment area that we all were smacking our lips in anticipation and excitement like the Roosters always seem to do and fulfilled that promise? And don't do a Pou on me and say resources because we have more then enough resources and the Roosters can't get them all right? Hell when was the last time we developed anyone we were smacking our lips with excitement over?

Results is what matters. Also they were willing to move our captain and leader for a X-Factor (Campbell) which for mine is suicide and insane since we have one of the top 5 effort and leader types of players in the league of the last 10 years ffs. How to ruin harmony and camaraderie within the club. As good as Campbell is he isn't Gutho and he sure as hell can't stop tries like Gutho can, which is just as important if not more so then lighting it up when the team is on the front foot and then letting in one or two when on the back foot.

If we think we have a problem in defense now, imagine our defensive structures with no Gutho and only Campbell calling the shots from the back and him being the last man in the line. It doesn't bare thinking.
