Of course it is a big if, but if we could, the kid certainly has talent.
Not saying he is the one, but just think we need to keep trying, there isn’t a lot of options around?
I think our biggest deficit over the last couple of years is the lack of pure leaders at our club that can drive change. It is why new recruits like Tamou and Api have been made captain without playing a game for us and having that ridiculous 5 captain thing.

I would rather pass on shuster and try and bring in leadership players like the sharks did in bringing in players like Luke Lewis, Dale Finaucian and Hynes.

there will always be another untapped talent ready to poach but until there is a good environment to bring out their best I reckon it would be a waste of time and set us back.

PS sorry about the atrocious name spelling, too hard to look up on the phone

Surprisingly, we get 2 out of the 10 named?

10. Jake Averillo – Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs

A highlight machine, Jake Averillo has blistering pace and elusiveness, which has made him one of the more exciting prospects in the NRL.

His Round Nine monster performance against the Dragons gave us a glimpse of the star potential Averillo possesses, with two individually brilliant tries.

Averillo, at just 22, has shown his versatility in his four seasons in the NRL.

Capable of filling the fullback and five-eighth roles, it’s clear the centre position is his strong suit.

9. Blake Taaffe – South Sydney Rabbitohs

With just 20 NRL games to his name, Taafe is the most inexperienced player on this list.

He has been effective in his limited action with a 70 per cent winning percentage across his 20 NRL game career.

Dominating in the NSW Cup currently, Taafe has already shown he is a first-grade level talent featuring heavily in the Rabbitohs' 2021 grand final run, filling in for Latrell Mitchell.

8. Daine Laurie – Wests Tigers

Laurie has been dropped from the Tigers and is trying to reinvent himself in the No.6 jersey in reserve grade.

The emergence of Jahream Bula has made Laurie’s return to first-grade unlikely, which could force him to move elsewhere.

Laurie possesses great attacking skill around the opposition's goal-line and has a safe pair of hands under the high ball. He would be an asset to various clubs across the league.

7. Jordan McLean – North Queensland Cowboys

Selected for the NSW Blues in 2022 and with eight Australian Kangaroos caps, McLean is the highest-profile prop still off-contract.

Averaging over 100 running metres over the past six seasons, McLean has consistently been solid in the forward pack.

At 31 years of age, his next contract will most likely be his last. Even as he enters the later end of his career, McLean can still provide value.

6. Tom Starling (Player Option) – Canberra Raiders

Starling has found his role at the Raiders as the ultimate bench spark in the hooker position.

With a playstyle that emulates Damien Cook, Starling scurries around the ruck well, finding openings in the defence.

With more clubs adopting an interchangeable hooker rotation, Starling’s qualities have become a premium in the NRL.

Starling does have a player option, but with his value growing since his last contract, he will likely test the free market.

5. Luke Brooks – Wests Tigers

The player that divides opinion like no other, Luke Brooks, remains one of the starting halfbacks left without a contract past 2023.

Brooks has severely underperformed his current $1 million dollar deal, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t still have a place in the NRL.

The 2018 Dally M Halfback of the Year has played just under 200 NRL games and would provide valuable experience to any side.

Brooks and the Tigers' relationship has been tumultuous, and it could be time for a fresh start.

4. Daniel Tupou – Sydney Roosters

The 6’4 winger who has terrorized opposing wingers for the last 12 seasons is without a contract past 2023.

The one-club man has averaged 150 run metres with ease across his career, and it’s a surprise he has yet to know his NRL future.

An Origin and Australian Kangaroo representative with three premierships to his name, Tupou is likely to be either re-signed or snatched up relatively soon.

3. Tyson Frizell – Newcastle Knights

An elite edge, Tyson Frizell has consistently been the best in his position across his decade-long career.

At 31 years of age, Frizell will likely be signing his last contract.

There will be no shortage of suitors considering Frizell’s decorated NRL career, with multiple Origin series wins and 14 Kangaroo caps.

He will find a new home comfortably if the Knights don’t extend his contract.

2. Jack de Belin (Player Option) – St George Illawarra Dragons

Since his almost 1000-day enforced hiatus, Jack de Belin has slowly regained the form that made him a New South Wales Blue in 2018.

De Belin has returned to full fitness and is pumping out 80-minute performances in the lock position week after week.

With 194 NRL appearances, de Belin has a wealth of experience. He is incredibly solid in defense and has a ballplaying skillset that helps link the spine to the backs.

With an option in his deal, de Belin may choose to forego testing the free market altogether.

1. Shaun Johnson - New Zealand Warriors

The most in-form off-contract player available, Johnson has been the Warriors' leader in 2023.

The Kiwi legend has shown that even at 32 years of age, he remains one of the most talented halves in the competition.

In the upper echelon of various attacking categories in the NRL, it’s criminal that Johnson hasn’t secured his NRL future yet.

Johnson has been vocal about his desire to stay at the Warriors, but if they are unable to hand him a new deal, he may be forced to walk.

I would take Frizzell out of that list. As I said above we need leaders and he is the clear leader out of that list.

Problem is he wouldn’t make our team on the edge above Paps and Bateman so we couldn’t offer him the money he will get elsewhere.

We need a half and a centre. Nothing more. Our pack is very good and will only be getting better with more time playing together.

I'd take Taffe from that list and pair him with Laurie in reserve grade. Let them build a combination together and eventually bring them through as a halves pairing. If they gel together then we are set for a very long time and can throw the kitchen sink at a marquee centre like Graham.

I don't really see any point going after players like Mclean or Frizell who will just demand big coin when we already have Bateman and Ice

Why isn’t Schuster motivated …he’s a very tough personality and very clever ..Siebold may be sliding back into his old inflexible ways. Imo it wouldn’t be wise for siebold to go cold on Shuster. Shuster wouldn’t back down. Maybe better with us. I loved his great uncle John shuster the all black and knights convert. This boys special he’d fill a massive hole, just about the only gap in what could be a pretty competitive team (With wakeham)and we can’t afford to be too fussy. For me worth the risk. “Only” $800k to match current salary. Better than what you’d pay for 100% definite? star who prob wouldn’t come anyway
So in short we should sign the bloke whose team mates and club want to get rid of and has been widely acknowledged as being an unfit, lazy f**k wit for 800k. What on earth could go wrong???

Haven't we got the leadership players already? Api, Klemmer, Papi, Jofo & Batemen? You could probably throw Dooee in there as well?
IMO, the time is never right or wrong to bring in talent, as long as the club is sure that the player understands what we expect and require.

I agree, he's not in the $800k class just yet, but he is apparently injured and not playing atm, not sure Manly want to get rid of him, so no one outside of Manly know what's going on, as in, he might not even be available, but IMO, it's worth finding out if he is, he is a good player, but, would he want to come here and he understand what is expected of him, by coming here. Contract incentives?
You might also expect Manly to put in some of the coin, if they don't want him.
He's only played 38 games to date, he has a long future if you can get him right?

But, I would hope we look at both him and Walker (Easts) tbh.

Yea well there is that
I just see players and coaches that we don’t want and they end up a great buy. We can’t afford to wait untill the perfect player comes along. We are a club that has to take some risks with players, that have been around a bit. For a very good 6 that’s our lot..The top perfect players at 6 are unlikely to come here. Maybe manly have pissed him off? Siebold has history. the clubs tilting toward what could be a massive slide and I’m sure tempers are freyed
He’s a risk but otherwise he’s at the top tier talent wise and if he works out, alongside wakeham forget about top 8 …at least do a thorough due diligence

it could be as simple as him and cherry evans clashing.. DCE also has history with drama including with our boy Hastings. Schusters a tough kid. He’s got a great pedigree. I’m sure he’s got an ego. But shit he’s only 21. He might just need some kid gloves with a softer touch handling him. Benji and co could be the right fit

And we may get him for $400k

Jim, one problem there is the fact that in Tigertown, they change their mind too soon. Remember Sheens said Laurie would be tried in the halves in the NSW Cup (or perhaps the press just said that), well last week he was listed with the 1 on his back, the same this week, so Sheens saw enough in 1 game only of Laurie in the halves.

As much as I have my doubts, Schuster has plenty of attacking talent and we need someone to get some tries.

Also could this mean 6. Schuster 7. Wakeham? Probably not and we keep Brooks up but its possible.

Agree, if we do nothing, we shouldn't expect different results, we certainly need a different mind set in the halves, I don't know if he's the one, but he has a huge upside if we can get him and he is prepared to work for the team, he could do wonders for us.

After all, we have had one of best 5/8's in the game, who will be coaching him?

Schuster has ability. He also has vision.

A bit of variety in attack and who knows, you may find you'll win more games.

Change is necessary and you've got some really good players but it's like the balance is off. That being said, confidence goes a long way and learning to win again may see your fortunes change.

We have enough talented-yet-pea-hearted players within our ranks. That's a hard NEIN for me re: Schuster.
Is that out of 10? hahaha

TBF, I don't know that much about him, is he a pea heart or is that just jealous player talk? But ATM, we are 1 win from 8 games, something has to change?

Josh Schuster injury: Manly coach Anthony Seibold defends struggling five-eighth after 'personal' attacks

Sounds like us?

Manly coach Anthony Seibold has defended struggling playmaker Josh Schuster, denying claims of an attitude problem.

The 21-year-old has been left out of the Sea Eagles lineup for the past two weeks, with concerns over his fitness and a lingering quad injury leaving the Kiwi young gun's career at a crossroads.

Schuster has played 38 NRL games to date, featuring in both the second-row and five-eighth, but is taking up an estimated $800,000 of the club's salary cap to wear the No.6 jumper.

Daly Cherry-Evans publicly called into question Schuster's fitness issues last week, admitting it was hurting the side's continuity, while fans and experts alike have raised concerns over his long-term future.

If he's on anywhere near the reported $800K a year that's absolute robbery. He skipped the World Cup to focus on fitness yet is still out of shape.

He definitely looked promising playing in the backrow a year or so ago, however, seems to have regressed. These comments paint the picture:

Well maybe the change of scenery will do him good.

I agree he isn’t worth the money, you would expect Many to chip in, if they wanted him gone?
