"That being the case, why did Iraq invade Kuwait? I thought they wanted Kuwait's oil? "
No offence Steve, but where did you hear that one? Do you believe this was the only reason for the last Gulf War?
... are you doubting that Iraq has large oil fields?
I only ask because I find your statement to be a slightly odd thing to say.

The Kuwaiti oil fields were but a small part of the 'reasoning' for Iraq's invasion.
Iraq sees Kuwait as one of its provinces. Also, Kuwait blocks off a substantial section of coastline for Iraq.

Kuwaitis not a democracy and is seen by many asbeing a puppet state of the west.

The Australian Labor party will take on the USA Labor MPs attacked the Bush administration during Wednesday's debate, with frontbencher Mark Latham saying the US President was "the most incompetent and dangerous president in living memory".

Powell strikes out in the UN Saddamarama He had the biggest, slowest, fattest, pitch lobbed to him by the world...
The ball had "give us your proof!" written all over it. Powell squirmed, sweat ran down his face, his muscles tensed, and then.... SWATTTTTTTTTT!
The air was shattered by the force of Colin's blow.
The silence was deafening... no one could speak. Then, the Brit stood up and screamed "YOU CAN TELL THAT ONE GOODBYE!! IT'S A HOMER! YAAAAA-HOOOOO! WAY TO GO, YANKS!"
The rest of the world remained silent. Then suddenly everyone, including the Brit, realized that the Mighty US had struck out.
"YEEEEEEERRRRRRR OUT'A HERE!" screamed the ump, who was of French, Russian, and Chinese origin.
And so endith the tale of why the warpigs sulked back to their slimepits, whining, gnashing, cursing, and weeping inconsolably.
LMAO!

Why isnt powell in jail?
Weinberger and Powell were in the middle of a criminal conspiracy. With that missile shipment, the Reagan administration stepped over an important legal line. The transfer violated laws requiring congressional notification for trans-shipment of U.S. weapons and prohibiting arms to Iran or any other nation designated a terrorist state. Violation of either statute could be a felony.

But newly declassified documents suggest that in 1986, Powell was a player in the secret -- and possibly illegal -- policy to supply Saddam Hussein's military with American-designed equipment that boosted Iraq's air mobility, a capability that helped Iraq conquer Kuwait in 1990 and touch off the Persian Gulf crisis in the first place.

Pure fantasy.A more likely ending to your scenario would be that Powell ,on being given out, replied "Get stuffed,we,ve got our own umpire !" and got on with the game.

Be buggered if it isnt about money.

The USA is currently running a deficit of $307 billion... Perhaps I said it too fast. Thats $307 BILLION.
This was not inherited from the previous government. In a very short time time, The Bush administration has shown itself to be poor fiscal managers as well as war-mongers.

Surely these blokes should be looking after their own affairs first and foremost... or is the war a simple diversion from their own domestic inadequacies... ?

If You're Happy And You Know It

If you cannot find Osama, bomb Iraq.
If the markets are a drama, bomb Iraq.
If the terrorists are Saudi,
And your alibi is shoddy,
And your tastes remain quite gaudy,
Bomb Iraq. If you never were elected, bomb Iraq.
If your mood is quite dejected, bomb Iraq.
If you think that SUVs,
Are the best thing since sliced cheese,
And your father you must please,
Bomb Iraq. If the globe is quickly warming, bomb Iraq.
If the poor will soon be storming, bomb Iraq.
We assert that might makes right,
Burning oil is a delight,
For the empire we will fight,
Bomb Iraq. If we have no allies with us, bomb Iraq.
If we think that someone's dissed us, bomb Iraq.
So to hell with the inspections,
Let's look tough for the elections,
Close your mind and take directions,
Bomb Iraq. If corporate fraud is growin', bomb Iraq.
If your ties to it are showin', bomb Iraq.
If your politics are sleazy,
And hiding that ain’t easy,
And your manhood’s getting queasy,
Bomb Iraq. Fall in line and follow orders, bomb Iraq.
For our might now knows no borders, bomb Iraq.
Disagree? We’ll call it treason,
It's the make war not love season,
Even if we have no reason,
Bomb Iraq.

The gap between the USA and Europe has widened tonight with UN delegates refusing to endorse a US invasion of Iraq.

The European collective is trying to find a soltution on two fronts: a peaceful diplomatic resolution in Iraq while placating an impatient US administration.

The Russians and the Germans have formulated a planwhich will see Saddam Hussein reduced to figure head status with the people of Iraq recieving much needed humanitarium assistance.

The division between the USA and Europethreatens to undermine the NATO alliance.

Its reported that the US Ambassador to Australia, Tom Schieffer has publicly criticised ALP politicians, in particular Mark Latham, for anti-American sentiment.

During Parliamentary debate, outspoken frontbencher Mark Latham described George W Bush as the most incompetent and dangerous president in living memory.

Apparently, the opposition leader Simon Crean has had a meeting with Mr Schieffer.

Mr Crean and Mr Scheiffer met in the Labor leader's office yesterday where Mr Crean agreed that anti-American sentiment wasn't helpful but says hereminded the US Ambssador that Australian politicians have the rightto speak freely in political debate without intereference from the US administration.

Reports go on to say that Simon Crean has carepeted Latham for has comments and asked for the anti-Americanismsto cease.

The whole episode begs the question regarding the Iraqi Ambassador. Do we have one in Australia?
More to the point, how would people react if the Iraqi Ambassador publicly criticised Australian politicians for their anti-Iraqi sentiments?

I would be telling the yank to get bent and look after his own affairs.

I have also just read a newsarticle on 9msn at the moment (in the national section) with regards the retired major-general bagging Australia's involvement in this build up of our forcesagainst Iraq, saying that it is an American scam to divert the publics attention away from the goings on in Afghanistan and at home.

Not to good for the government when you get people this high up the food chain publicly disagreeing with you
