NEWCASTLE Knights rugby league recruit Russell Packer has spoken briefly to police in relation to an alleged assault in Sydney.
The Newcastle Herald understands the former New Zealand international attended Newcastle police station on Tuesday and briefly spoke to detectives before leaving.

Packer was not formally interviewed and no charges have been laid.
The investigation centres around accusations that a Summer Hill man, 22, was found unconscious in Martin Place about 1.30am on Saturday following an alleged fight.
It is understood the National Rugby League is aware of the incident.
The Knights confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon that they were ‘‘aware of a matter involving Russell Packer on Friday night in Sydney’’.
‘‘The NRL has been advised and the NRL integrity unit is investigating,’’ the statement said.
‘‘The club will co-operate with the police and the NRL.

‘‘Until all investigations are complete, the club will make no further comment.’’
Police investigations are continuing into the alleged assault.
It has been a busy few days for the NRL integrity unit, which is also investigating incidents that led to criminal charges being laid against Manly forward Richie Fa’aoso and Canterbury veteran Reni Maitua.

NEWCASTLE Knights recruit Russell Packer has been charged following an alleged incident that left a man unconscious and with a fractured eye socket.
The former Warrior, 24, attended Newcastle Police Station this afternoon where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and failure to quit licensed premises.
The incident occurred at approximately 1.30am in Martin Place, Sydney, on Saturday night.
"A 22-year-old Summer Hill man was found unconscious at the scene and treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics," NSW police said in a statement.
"He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital for treatment of a fractured eye socket."
Packer was granted conditional bail and will appear in the Downing Centre Local Court on Monday 6 January 2014.
It is not the first time Packer has hit the headlines this year over disciplinary matters.
In June, Packer was fined $15,000 for urinating in his shorts during an NRL match at Suncorp Stadium.
