To be fair, is it's AOBs call to do that? Isn't the head of football and the recruitment manager responsible for that?

Yeah AOB has stated a number of times he’s there to coach (which he isn’t very good at) but he leaves the recruitment and retention to Zammit and Gardner.
Zammit is the one who should be blamed for the lack of depth in the squad.

Half of our roster does suck but that isn't our biggest issue. The higher ups are targeting the right players and is working towards something. Looks like we are going for a mix of local talent mixed in with highly rated English talent. That's a good philosophy and something I can get behind. Not saying they have done a great job but their mission is understandable.

Furthermore, there is no way To'a or Pearce could/would have made any difference to our results this year. If we lost a couple of games 22-16 or something, maybe they might have made a difference. We are losing 50-2. We haven't scored a try in weeks.

On the other hand, the biggest issue is with the coaching. Watch every other, not ANY other but EVERY other team in the NRL and their attack is different to ours. It looks like we are trying to play some sort of power game from 2004. Big powerful forwards to cart it up, try to win field position. Our halves are split left and right and never create anything together. Our best player, who is known for his silky smooth skills outwide, stands right next to our hooker at every ruck. Our replacement hooker has less passing and playmaking skill than most props have these days.

So... AOB needs to go. If Gardner doesn't fire him, it'll be the biggest blunder he has made while in charge.

Pearce would have made a difference.

Pearce would absolutely have not stood for those performances.

it was like the flick of a light switch, it all started the game against Cronulla.

I'm wondering if AOB is a micro manager, a bit too much and makes things more complicated than they need to be

Rival teams would be able to formally approach Pearce from November 1 about offers for 2023, with Zammit telling NRL.com that no club had been in contact regarding Pearce for next year or beyond in any case.
According to Zammit, any approach would fall on deaf ears.
"Nothing along the lines of an early release has been discussed by us at all, not once, and there wouldn't really be a discussion anyway," Zammit said.
"We wouldn't be releasing him. He's contracted next year and he'll be our halfback next year.
"Mitchell hasn't brought it up, we haven't brought it up. He's such an important part of our team for this year and the next.
"No club has got in contact with us about it either, if there is interest there it hasn't got to that point, but as I've said we wouldn't entertain it."
Zammit said an extension beyond 2022 had not been broached by the club, "but we always said to Mitchell that is not beyond the realms of him being here in 2023".

Zammit sure does get a free ride on here.

I just want to know who is in charge of recruitment and retention.

I always believed Zammit was a scout and would aid in selling Newcastle to prospects. But he wouldn’t be the one offering contracts.

I don’t believe Gardner is the guy who says re-sign player X or sign player y. Like sure he has the power to but that shouldn’t be his job.

Danny Buderus. Obviously love him as a player but what’s he actually done in this football operations role? I only really remember seeing him when the Pearce wedding issue was happening.

And with all of that above, where does AOB sit. Surely he has big input otherwise he’ll leave here and say he never got the roster he really wanted.

Zammit is a talent scout, a recruiter, he isnt the roster manager for the Knights - that was Alex McKinnon but I'm not sure who it is now

McKinnon was never involved in retention.

McKinnon has spent the past three years as Newcastle's elite-pathways recruitment manager but resigned earlier this week.

A former player manager with a "good eye for talent" has replaced the departed Alex McKinnon to work alongside Knights head of recruitment Clint Zammit and pathways boss Garth Brennan.
Adam Doyle, who lives on the Central Coast, started his new job with the club last week.
"According to Alex, he has a good eye for talent," Brennan told us.

Zammit and Gardner are.
if that's true then there is one of of our problems. Gardner is jointly managing the roster ....ffs.

I would have thought an experienced hand would be required to properly maintain a roster, it's a very complicated process. Full time position in fact.
