Sack Griffin

Can we stop picking up sacked coaches, they get sacked for a reason as we are finding out from Griffin.
Are you kidding? If the criteria was let's not employ a coach who has been sacked that would give the club very limited options.

Surely you know already or will find that most coaches out there have been sacked at least once in the careers?

I guess your man Mary super coach McGregor wasn't sacked before getting hired by us and you were happy enough with that for 7 seasons weren't you?

What an absolute mess, these guys are pure morons.
Sullivan will be let go, Hook will be sacked, and we will be left with a team full of reserve graders...and Ben Hunt.
They are just so stupid.
Option A, sack Hook now, new coach walks into a mess but squad with potential, move Sullivan to 7, Hunt to 9 and begin the rebuild. Hell, that team might not play finals next year but it wont be bottom 4.
Option B, keep Hook for 10 rounds into 23' then sack him, lose Sullivan to Dogs, new coach walks into an absolute rabble.
Geez, I wonder which option the club will go with? morons.
CRUSH
You forgot Option C
Appoint Hook KOE Coach for 2023 , and then appoint Hasler , Hannay or Deano as Head Coach
Hook wouldnt cop that and would arrange his own release fee 🤔 🤔

I think that there are options for hiring a coach who hasn’t been sacked. Cameron Ciraldo was a good pick up, Fitzgibbon had a great first year, maybe Jason Ryles would be an option.
Shaun Wane would be a beauty. These guys have never been sacked to the best of my knowledge.

Regarding you constantly trying to get a rise from me with the Mary carry on, I’m not sure what you are hoping to achieve? Are you trying to ridicule me?
I was never happy about him being with us for 7 years? I supported him for a while but eventually worked out he was an absolute imbecile. I couldn’t stand him in his final years.
But you see the forum members that have been here for a while, which is most of us, know that.

You’re a troll in my eyes, you only post to criticise other posters.
Why don’t you try posting your opinions on football, the club, the game, instead of just trolling?
You might get more out of the forum.

Yes and defending another so strongly when all we were doing was seeking details.. which to date we still have not got.

No worries, so instead of saying let's not hire a coach who has been sacked before, why not just say you believe we should hire someone who has never coached a game in the NRL? You must be keen on Dean Young as well as he would fit the bill there too?

I'm sorry to upset you but you have zero credibility or standards when it comes to a coach. All forum members who have been around for a while remember you were a big proponent of Mary for a long time while he was coach, this shows you have NFI what a good coach is. There is no coming back from being Mary's number one fan to all of a sudden being head of the lynch mob for the next guy in charge. It is the height of hypocrisy and is wearing a little thin mate. Even above you've mentioned two guys who are under contract as head coaches with other clubs, how do we go about getting them to coach the dragons next season? Do you really have any clue?

Of course it's a forum and everyone is free to post their thoughts and opinions but I for one never take any of your opinions seriously when it comes to who should be our coach for the reasons mentioned above.

“All forum members that have been around a while remember……”
How would you know?
You’ve been around for 5 minutes?
All I see is about 400 posts attacking other members, mostly me, for their views?
Read your post’s back maybe.
In the above you have said I have zero credibility, I’m a hypocrite, and all forum members know I have NFI. And that’s just one post.
As I said, less trolling and maybe post a little about your opinions on topics other than other forum members.
Have a nice day.

I disagree with you mate. This is a forum and open discussion/challenging ideas is one of the main purposes of a Forum.

I've engaged with you previously on my thoughts about the coach and why the challenges facing our club run a lot deeper than that. I provided you with statistical evidence to support my thoughts on this also.

Your response to me on that occasion was something like 'there is a lot to impact here'
(NFI what that means by the way). You then brushed me off in similar fashion to how you've done this morning.

Perhaps if your posts weren't so centred around trying to fit in with the group think but instead were more analytical/insightful you may not find me doing much other than liking your posts and moving on.

I saw all three of them make some individually brilliant plays. Didn’t see them coached to be part of a good system though.

As for your Nancy comment, it’s just typical cranky old man bollocks. Old men have been criticising the work ethic and toughness of younger generations since the dawn of time. That same generation that you’re criticising just won 2 comps in a row at Penrith. If I were to guess, I’d say that it’s probably the same shit that Hook believes, and is likely the reason why he’s having so much trouble dealing with the squad.

Here’s a hot tip. When one person in a workplace complains and everyone else is happy, that worker is likely to be the issue. When a couple complain it could be either way. When a critical mass is unhappy. It’s probably a culture issue.

We have a culture issue that has outlasted many, many players. Might be time to acknowledge that the issue is structural, including but not limited to the coach.
We have the coach we have because of the BOD we have

We have the BOD you have because of the "pup"aka "super club" that was sold to us when we joined forces with Illawarra.

We have all of that because the NRL in fact lost the Superleague war.

So our issues have been around for over 20 years.

The anomaly is the Bennett years which in fact were handed to him on a silver platter and many of our issues today can be traced back to the ultimate cost of that brief success.

So coaches, BOD recruitment etc etc etc all have a hand in it as do we the fans due to our harsh and often too critical analysis of all things St GI which is like feeding strawberries to pigs when it comes to the media.

We have often been super critical of any players having a shit bagging session on their departure but now that is seen as fair play as many want to hold onto the thought that Hook is the cause of all of this and that with him gone all is repairable and instantly better. Poor fool anybody harboring those thoughts.

So somehow players who put their cue in the rack or never delivered anywhere near the expectation "we" had for them can say "Hook" and this place accepts that and offers no critical analysis of the players themselves.

As bad as Hook may be in as many areas as people would like to conceive are possible it is simply ridiculous to ignore the lack of form, basic skills, ability, effort that many of these players demonstrated and it is equally ridiculous to not hold "them" accountable for much that befell them.

Last but not least we all need to give ourselves an uppercut for being so easily excited by kids playing in lower grades where basic skills are so poor and for thinking that a few big hits and the odd tackle bust or offload means we have signed a "quality" player and not a "journeymen" who will now miraculously "deliver quality football" week in week out.

Could you reframe this into a succinct point that responds to what I said?

I’d be happy with Hannay as head coach with Deano as assistant. I think they can bring a fresh perspective to the club. Our current coach is a dinosaur who can’t relate to the players and Des may be getting to that stage himself.

I think most here expect our Board to select a Coach with the best ability & references to compose a team of competent professional players to the standards of the Club. Goals must be met.
If those goals are not achieved then Coach is terminated.
The players as professionals
play of the game to the best of their ability. It makes sense to do so.
So if things go belly up the coach has employed the wrong players to do the job.
Or the Board has employed the wrong coach.
Because of the past record of the SGI Board I think they have made another major blunder in employing Griffin,
& he has showed his true inability to coach.

Evidently we needed more cotton wool for the playing group and we shouldn’t have let the yoga meditation guy go.
It’s easy to be glib about these things.

But the best performing teams in the world across the various codes all use sports psychologists and some form of mindfulness. The world of sport has moved on from the amateur days of training a couple of days a week and doing a road run for fitness. In the NRL, the physicality of the modern player and their performance level is a testament to the move into elite training.

As a club, we can be a bunch of cranky old men who live off the old glory days, or we can accept that the world is changing, and we need to adapt to succeed.

One of those paths leads to the death of the club.

Agreed. All for meditation, creative visualization and self-esteem / mental health conditioning as part of the training regime.
A cohort of cranky old men would, no doubt, make it a challenge to implement. I may be wrong but I can't imagine Craig Young and Hook sitting in the lotus position and 'turning their focus inwards'.
We might be on to something here. This may be the missing link. Where's the patchouli incense when you need it? After all, they both have the builds of a Chinese Buddha. Very well balanced at the base.

The difference between our positions is quite small

I know what our club is and the many many mistakes it makes

I also understand Hooks very limited. ability and his many curmudgeonly ways and how they are not beneficial.

All that is a given in my book.

My issue is how people are so willing to lump all of it into the “Hook” basket and let the players off so lightly and in fact at times apportion no accountability for their roll in some of this.

In the real world if you don’t like your boss and you decide to seek opportunities elsewhere it is totally incumbent upon you to continue to do your best at all times until your departure.

Unfortunately some players don’t and they offer all sorts of reasons why they didn’t and because we see them as sportsmen we listen to even the most minute of their complaints and form empathies with them all the while missing the important point that these blokes are employees and as such have obligations.

They are hired guns / modern day gladiators who are extremely highly paid and some allow their private lives to impact against their club, coaches, sponsors, fans, team mates yet when a coach gives them a bit of tuff love they whinge and whine and hold the coach responsible and not themselves.

People of recent years see old blokes like me as dinosaurs because we want to see a bit of stiff upper lip and steel in the backbone and honour in a handshake and if that is not how the world should be then god help all of you and when you get stitched up by some arsehole in the future don’t forget he’s got feelings and probably was spoken to harshly when he was young so let him cry on your shoulder and get it all out as you will both feel better.

I come from the era if the biff and proud of it.

I must be one of those old cranky men you were referring to above. However , I back Old Timer's comments & his rationale. Unlike yourself he passionately expresses his point of view , backs it up & is not condescending. In summary I view OT's comments as Players should be accepting responsibility for their actions / abilities rather than allowing everything to be laid at the feet of the Coach.
There is not a genuine Leader among the Group obviously because these issues should have been addressed throughout the Season :
Generally there was a lack of cohesion throughout games.
Effort from some was not supported by others.
Teamwork rarely existed.

Forwards could not gain any momentum.
Uniform Backline movements were stuttered.
Combinations were lacking.
Kicking in general play was terrible.
Error counts were the worst in years.
Defence was atrocious.

I think that nails it !

Gos’ statements are the ones that have tipped me completely.

Regardless of the era, how can you say that he has acted poorly? I don’t think there’s anyone from any era who would argue that the health of your wife or child is less important than a footy game.

And he didn’t whinge. He went and worked hard in Reserve grade - his form was good enough to warrant his inclusion in the NSW cup team of the year. Then blacklisted.

Now I don’t think he’s a great player. Pretty average journey man really. But he wasn’t even included in the 22. Surely he had a case to be ahead of some of the blokes who were putting in poor performances every week.

Building toughness into young men is great. But punishing someone for supporting his wife and child? That’s not the kind of toughness that I want at my club.
