I am actually mostly optimistic but I just think top 4 is unrealistic given how this year finished up. BTW, I see Broncos, Eels and Penrith in a better spot than Dragons next year.
Yes we have a great pack and quality halves but our backs are rubbish and our coach is too conservative. He will probably put nightingale at fullback next year....

Dragons are so far the only team I've seen recruit positively this year. Panthers might lose Moylan, Eels are gonna lose radradra, broncos will still be amongst it but they've lost more than they've recruited. I can't see these teams improving on this year but the dragons will finally have a good halfback next year. (I don't know how long it's been since that happened tbh). I definitely think your back 5 will be different round 1 2018 as well. I would be quite surprised if McGregor hasn't identified your outside backs as a problem. I do think aitken, duffy, lafai and nightingale are quality players. Its just McDonald that I'd probably be looking at moving on. Since aitken is so injury prone as well it might not hurt to recruit another centre. I think the problems in the dragons side are definitely fixable.

Welcome to our forum and this post. It sums up perfectly where the team is at this stage

Newcastle , Souths, Roosters, Cowboys

You think cowboys and Newcastle have done a good job? I think that's debatable. As for Souths they've had years of poor recruitment to negate this years recruitment and roosters don't really have a salary cap as we've seen.. I think dragons is still the best out of the lot.

If we’d scraped into the 8 this year I would have been more optimistic for next year on account we would have arrested the slide and learnt a few things(mainly aimed at the coach). Seeing that we crashed I don’t know what can be taken out of that as a positive(regardless of the inevitable spin coming out about improvement vs. 2016). Personally, I am not a wrist slitting pessimist, more a realist that we will be in a similar position to this year but scrape into the 8 on the back of an improved halves combination. I just can’t see much more than that. Appreciate your less blinkered optimism though.
Half glass empty version of where we are:
1. In spite of much improved stats in 2016, we only managed 2 more wins than 2016.
2. If you isolate the last 17 rounds and the 5 or 6 wins we managed to put together, we actually were running close to last.
3. If you extrapolate the back end of the season into 2018 then what is our real potential in 2018?
I get all the hype surrounding Graham and especially Hunt but opposition coaches quickly devised tactics to counter McGregor's game plan which continued to the end of the year.
4. Any way you look at it, we had a soft draw in 2017 and still didn't make it.
Stats may have been skewed by playing the cellar dwellers twice.
If that changes in 2018 then we may struggle.
Opposition coaches lick their lips at the prospect of playing us the way we are coached.
They know we are vulnerable and they exploit it.
So unless McGregor suddenly becomes an astute, innovative and inspirational coach, there is not a lot to look forward to.
Look forward to seeing the draw for 2018 which will reveal a lot about our prospects.

Cowboys have added Jordan McLean - a current international - and lost zero starting players. They've also got Thurston and Scott coming into a grand final side. Absolutely

Newcastle are also miles better, adding a stack of quality with Gagai the only real loss

Anyhow, sack McGregor

I find it curious and frustrating that a multi million dollar enterprise like St George -Illawarra seems to be obsessed with appointing l-plate coaches, from Nathan Brown through to McGregor with a brief period of professionalism for 3 years under Bennett. Brown went straight from early retirement with a neck injury in his late 20's to 1st grade coach with no real coaching experience at any level. The results, with a star studded roster, were mediocre with no premiership. Likewise Price with a "kiss of death"endorsement from Bennett and a flimsy cv, was even more of a disaster. And then comes McGregor, with a "dead cat bounce"in performance after a change of coach and scraping into the eight, was given a golden parachute into the position. He, along with Brown and Price had no pedigree of any value beyond park football. I don't share the optimism of some that Ben Hunt and James Graham, as good as they are are going to transform this team into a serious contender. There are too many holes to plug. I share Dennis' reservations

The sacking of McGregor cannot come soon enough. It will be a moment of pure joy when it does finally occur. I had hoped he would simply not be re-signed and the past several years of torture would be over. Alas, we are run by numbskulls who thought they would extend the pain.

Very well said , it stil to this day freaks me out how nathon brown was handed that roster and there unbelievable persistence with him during the height of arguably the best playing roster while Wayne Bennett snuck in with a premiership at the back end of that particular squads careers once Bennett left they reverted back to water boys to coach it's very strange why they have kept persevering with McGregor why the entire support base knows he isn't a first grade coach yet doust and the rest of the dinousrs think otherwise his lack of succes states he isn't a first grade coach yet it seems they are protecting him from every angle comments from doust stating he thinks McGregor is a career coach the big problem at the dragons is a aging out of date management , for this club to move forward doust and this losing chemistry at the front desk needs to go a change of chief executive wil go along away to towards a successful footy team with the right coaching staff

I agree Lad, The additions of Graham and Hunt following Vaughan and McInness is top notch so far. We are a quality outside back short but we still have spots and money to spend.
Recruitment at the dragons has been excellent the last 2 years.
2018 will see us with a top notch line up.
I agree also with your previous post that our back 5 should and hopefully will look slightly different.
On paper we are looking like a top 4 team for 2018.

Lol its hard for a supporter of another team to get approval on here from anyone about anything.
If you say a negative comment your a troll (even though most on here are negative), and if you say anything positive most on here will shoot you down.
Hahahahaha its a no win. But personally ill say your posts made absolute sence. I too think our recruitment has been great.
2018 will be a huge year for the dragons.

Hope there is a big signing in the wind. This could be a chance as MacDonald is
Looking like he is going to be released

It doesnt seem that it will be a big name, although i hope it will be, but iv been hearing whispers that an offer has been made to a backline player that wont be a depth player.
Quick question, how do you think Nene will go outside Hunt? Presuming he is kept?
