Bennett could really shake things up and put Gids in the 1 and Darius to the wing. At least Kurt will attempt to catch and return the ball.

If we have to persist with Kurt in the starting side, I'd be exploring Gids to fullback, Darius to 5/8 personally. Kills two birds with one stone. Gids can only look adequate at fullback, and Boyd is one of the best playmakers we have in the squad but he's lazy and fullback allows him to be lazy. Mullo plays mostly at first receiver now as it is.

I don't think this spine could be worse than what we have at the moment:

1. Gidley

6. Boyd
7. Mullen

9. Clydesdale

14. Roberts

It's like we have to have Gids in the team for the sake of it. Wayne needs to grow a pair and drop him to the bench, right now he's just moving the problem around

I always thought Clydesdale woukld start the game and Gids get 10 -15 mins each half from the bench as hooker. Allow him to come on when he's fresh and most defenders aren't. Could get out of dunny half a bit more????

That's what should've happened but Wayne never had the balls to make Gidley a bit part player. I mean instead of giving Clydesdale more game time and reducing Gidley's role slightly supercoach did the opposite and gave Gidley even more minutes and at times he's playing Gids as a roving player just for the sake of having him out there. I mean talk about flogging a dead horse, Wayne's solution is to flog it harder

Mullo has been playing halfback all year. It is just pure denial anything else. If Boyd was our 5/8 I believe we get our best team. Gidley is a fullback if nothing else. I was wrong on his dummy half ability. The passing element is beyond him.

Tonight is going to be interesting. What happens if the halfback experiment fails (again)? Where does he go then?

It puzzles me that some of you think that Bennett can't see the problems with Gidley. He's had him all over the field since he's got here - without ever being able to find a spot for him. There's pretty obviously something more going on than what we see on face value.

Gidley frustrates me as much as the next fan, but I'm not dumb or arrogant enough to think that I can see it - but that Wayne Bennett can't. I don't know what the reasons are - maybe instruction from the club, maybe a philosophy that has served him well for 30 years... who knows, but to assert that Bennett still thinks Gidley is a quality player that serves us well, or even that he's ignoring the issue, seems outlandish to me. We like to think that we're smarter than coaches around here - but most of the time we aren't... we just rarely see the whole picture.

There may even be a belief in the club that the fallout of sacking Gidley would be too big... especially after going through the Brian Smith cleanout, and that Bennett's hands are tied for non-football related reasons. Whatever the case, we're talking about the guy who famously sacked The King. There has to be more to it that we're not seeing.

Yep there sure is. There's absolutely no chance of an ESL club pounding the door down to take him off our hands early.

Maybe Bennett is trying to set gidley up for failure. He is playing him in positions where there are players that are obviously better. Perhaps he is trying to get the admin to realise what most of us already know, that being there is no place for him in the team.

Bennett may have already proposed to the hierarchy to move gidley on and was met with strong resistance?

All this talk of Roberts or Gidley could very well be moot in a year or two if Jaelan Feeney kicks on. Got a show and go to rival Tyrone's, and is an excellent playmaker

Well that's just the point, we don't know. We do know that he can't settle him in a position - and that he's not willing to persist with him in a position if it's not working. Why he hasn't gone the whole hog is anyone's guess, but my point is that it's not necessarily that he's blind to the fact that he's not working anywhere. A lot of posters seem to assume that he's past it or senile or something, without considering that they don't know what goes on with the club outside of 80 minutes per week.

I just feel that his record speaks for itself and the mans football brain deserves a bit more respect than that. Who knows, maybe he'll write another book about it some day.

It also puzzles me why people are willing to bask in the success of our junior sides at the moment whilst ignoring that Bennett has probably had a very large hand in the club from the ground up since he's been here. In fact, one of his mandates when he arrived was to correct the junior situation. Can anyone say with a straight face that there's been no improvement there?

There are 2 things that Bennett has done since he's arrived that I straight up don't agree with. The first is his persistence with Gidley in first grade - and it's got me f**ked to the point where I definitely suspect it's not all in his hands, or that there's something we're not seeing there. The second is his insistence against wrestling coaches. There's no excuse there - although it's proven that a team can succeed without it if it's good enough at everything else - it's a constant area where we are dominated and it makes everything else harder. Every other thing he has done since arriving has been absolutely spot on the money imo. To me, he can't be too senile if he's getting the rest right.

Any coach is trying to win every game. This is tin foil hat stuff.

Perhaps he's too close with Darius. If we should be moving Gidley anywhere, it should be fullback. Boyd doesn't return the ball and doesn't support the ball runners - at least Gids is capable of that at a minimum.

Good game from gidley, picking up the Fox MOTM. Only downside was that he murdered two overlaps when they shifted the ball to the left and he got tackled instead of quickly moving it on. Wonder if Bennett goes for Waddell next week or moves gidley back to hooker?

Yeah, well, Boyd will never lead Newcastle to a premiership :sarcasm:

Maybe not but what we got last night is the superstar under all the moodiness. He is world class when he wants to be. Who knows. Maybe he has decided he wants to be here afterall. He certainly was happy all night.
