Sam Tomkins: coming to an NRL club near you

that's completely up to the club involved... and its not as easy as splitting the total salary cap by 25 players...

some clubs... like the Warriors for example... have over a million dollars left over in the cap after 24 players have been taken in to account.

so they can afford to pay over a million dollars for a player.

it all comes down to the right player... and can the club handle the problems that may arise from having one player earn that much.

but if a club wants to do then fair enough...

Fair enough it suits the club now, but what happens when they need to upgrade the contracts of all the youngsters on their books and cant do so because they've got one dude that's chewed the entire cap on his own?

They lose all the talent they've nurtured.

It's a f**k of a situation. Glad I don't have to make that decision

By all accounts that I have heard the Sharks offer to Carney was about 100-150 lower than he had been offered elsewhere. But he was happy where he was and didn't want to go through all the upheaval etc when he was happy where he was.

He felt a debt of loyalty to the Sharks and the money he is on there is bloody good so he decided to stay.

Don't forget when you earn 100 grand more you only see 50 of it. Is 50 grand extra really enough for all that uncertainty and perceived lack of loyalty when someone is already paying you 700k?

Time for a new accountant if you are paying 50% income tax! ;)

Maybe not for 100k, though it must be some good place to turn down 500k over the life of the contract but over 250k like the Warriors fans are claiming? In all honesty would you turn down 1.25mill if you know it was your last decent pay period?

As said its all conjecture as no one knows what he or Tomkins has or hasn't been offered. Auckland must be shit if players are turning down 1million bucks!

yup... spot on... thats the trade off...

they can offer big bucks to a Tomkins type player now... but it may hurt them in the long term.

i think the thing the warriors will bank on is the production line of quality kids coming through will bring the prices of incumbents down.

also... im hearing that the NRL are starting to look at new cap initiatives so in a couple of years when all the kids come off contract they may have a new marquee player system which may ease things...

Will get found out in the 13 man game.

Well he has never been found out as you put it against the cream of the NRL in the kangaroos or kiwis in fact he has done quite well so I think he will thrive in the NRL. His footwork, support play and awareness are as good as any NRL player if not better. Just because someone didn't come through from Australia doesn't mean they will be found out, how many British players have come out now shone or at least competed well. Its a long list.

Par for the course, English player to NRL, player will struggle. Player arrives and is outstanding. Commentators on said players likelihood of success slink away until next English signing is announced.

Sam Tomkins will be a star though I am not sure he will be built/conditioned for the week to week to grind in the NRL. I'd like to be proven wrong as he is a genuine superstar that will be good for the game in NZ. Smaller Australasian players have been and gone though coming through our pathways you're conditioned better than the UK imports for the grind.

Time will tell...

He was somewhat disappointing though means little.

The Warriors, as usual, will be the team I watch every week with the Broncos and fingers crossed Tomkins is carving up. I loved watching him when I could in Super League and there were glimpses as to why we ALL will in the NRL.

He played a lot of DH today and was quiet

His D was a little sketchy at times yesterday but looked very good otherwise

Yep, he'll be a target under high kicks & also on kick returns. He seems to have a good feel for the game & from what I've seen has plenty to offer as an impact player & also someone who can be another playmaking option ( like quite a few fullbacks in the NRL - e.g. Bowen's role over the last few years with the Cowboys )

I think he'll have his highs & lows, not sure which will be more though. As you mention, the longevity of an NRL season will test him physically & mentally.

I'm not sure he'll struggle too much with the longevity of an NRL season since they play more games in SL with the Challenge Cup and all..

If Johnson follows the game plan we should see Tomkins cross the stripe with monotonous regularity.

Shaun has to put the team before his mirror, Tomkins will be like tits on a bull if the ball doesn't find its way to him

It's not the longevity, it's the week in / week out physicality that would see a new player to the NRL fall away in form.

He's no different to anyone else - time will tell of course. If he rises above that, he truly is a great player.
