You can use stats to support any argument you want.
As the saying goes, there are 3 types of lies, "lies, damned lies and statistics"
And comparing years with different variables, injuries, suspensions, some inside some outside our control is flawed with danger
At worst you say the seasons were comparable and on par overall as both seasons 2022 and 2024 we fell 1 win short of the 8
The one difference @Old Timer neglects is that was Hook's 2nd year in after having a look at the squad for 1 1/2' years.
Who cares if your losses are an average of 40 points diff if they are minimal enough you win the comp
He hates Flanno Yes and will search long and hard to prove his point that we are not improving
I say just keep looking at the scoreboard
Lets see what Flanno''s 2nd year brings and then compare

Wow that's damning isn't it? Our club has literally assembled a roster that can't tackle.
It certainly shows that our deeefence has been putrid for many a year and then some. But in saying that it also reflects on the poor offence because if we had scored more points than what we did, the for and against differential could have been either positive or closer to it but still not good enough to make finals.

I said on another thread that if we'd conceded just 1 converted try less per game we'd still be in 8th and playing for something on the weekend despite our woeful defence. But yeah I was gobsmacked by those stats that @Sloan Ranger provided. We've spent 5 or six years assembling a team of individuals who can't defend!!! You can't make this stuff up. The Dragons Way.

Some stats to consider when evaluating our season

2022 Wins 12 Losses 12
2024 Thus far Wins 11 Losses 12

In the games we won in 2022
Ave points scored 21.75 so 1 point every 3.7 minute
Ave points scored against us 13.65 so 1 point every 5.85 minutes

In the games we won in 2024
Ave points scored 28.5 so 1 point every 2.8 minutes
Ave points scored against us 12.9 so 1 point every 6.2 minutes

So we won games by a higher margin but a win by 1 point is worth the same as a win by a 20 points but fair to say there is higher enjoyment in bigger wins.

In the games we lost in 2022
Ave points scored by us 14.85 so 1 point every 5.4 minutes
Ave points scored against us 32.5 so 1 point every 2.5 minutes
The differential to make up between wins and losses was 19 points per game.

In the games we have lost thus far in 2024
Ave points scored by us 14.1 so 1 point every 5.65 minutes
Ave points scored against us 39 so 1 point every 2.06 minutes
The differential to make up between wins and losses is now 26 points per game.

So anyone who thinks we are improving needs to understand what the statistics around our losses actually means.

After all, it’s the losses that must be turned around so this year compared to 2022 we scored similar points and conceded more points per game in our losses so that means less time in possession and a greater margin to pull back.

I for the life of me can’t see how that can be a sign of anything other than going backwards.

Now for those that insist on looking at 2023 then IMO we should only look at the games Hook coached of which we lost 8.

Our opposition scored an average of 28 points per game in each of those losses so a point every 2.85 minutes.

We scored an average of 17.25 points per game in each of those losses so a point every 4.63 minutes.

The differential to make up between losses and wins was 11 points per game.

These losses led to Hook being punted yet when you look at the raw numbers in respect of the nature of those losses in 2023 they were far less devastating than those of either 2022 or 2024 and the task to turning things around re semi final footy was in some ways closer.

So IMO in 2024 we have picked some very low hanging fruit to get some wins off a very much easier base than the challenge that now confronts us.

Wins against top 8 sides:
2022 - Souths (7th), Canberra (8th)
2024 - Manly (7th), Panther (2nd), Storm (1st), Dolphins (probably 8th)
At least we showed we could compete with the big boys in 2024.

Biggest Home Crowd:
2022 - 16,000 at WIN against Wests Tigers
2024 - 19,000 at WIN against Penrith
So a 20% improvement on attendances when you don't play stodgeball with a bunch of old queensland players.

My purely unbiased opinion is that compared to 2022, this year we played better, but yes we also played worse. Which would you rather support? A consistent but poor side with no likelihood of improvement, or a side that occassionally rises to great heights with the hope of better to come?

Good points Johnno

The way I look at it Griffin's time at the Dragons was just miserable. Even in the year they went equal wins and losses they just looked mediocre all year and across the entire Griffin era I can only remember one really good performance which was ironically, given the circumstances this week, against Parra. And as I said in an earlier post the Griffin teams were easily the worst, most dull , slow, old, tired and insipid sides I've ever seen in my time following this team. They were frankly putrid. Quite a feat to achieve following on from the clown fest that was the McGregor era. We were consistent in the Griffin era. Consistently horrible. Consistently depressing. Consistently getting worse.

Year one under SF we were the classic case of one step forward, two steps back. But despite the disappointments of the last few weeks there does seem to be a dim light at the end of the tunnel, even if the end is still a bit of a way away. We had some very good wins and some unacceptable losses. The roster will be incrementally better next year. Just please for the love of whatever you hold holy SF, fix our defence....

If I hd to choose between watching 2022 and 2024, 2024 is the clear winner despite the lows.

Ok lets use some stats.......

Ben Hunt leads the try assists tally over every other halfback.

Ben Hunt leads the NRL in kick metres.

Ben Hunt leads the NRL in kicks.

Ben Hunt leads the NRL in attacking kicks

Ben Hunt leads the NRL in short dropouts.

Ben Hunt is 4th in the NRL in line break involvements

So with all those amazing stats........He's still not a halfback's or a captain's asshole. Stats can be twisted to back whatever argument you want. And if you want to use stats to prefer the Anthony Griffin Dragons over the Flanagan Dragons good luck with that. The Griffin sides were the most putrid and soulless Dragons sides I've ever watched play.....since '77 as my username suggests.

Let me now twist those stats I gathered towards another argument. If Mr Ben Hunt presented his team with so much opportunity as per the above stats - would that not suggest that the shite roster built around him wasn't capable of taking advantage of the opportunities he gave them? Would it not suggest that the available players weren't good enough to convert the myriad of attacking opportunities he provided? Would it not suggest our roster wasn't good enough even with the abundance of opportunities our shitty number 7 cooked up?

I'm just as disappointed and frankly disgusted with how 2024 how fizzled out and the gutless performances of the last 2 weeks but comparing Flanno and Griffin as coaches is like comparing $500 Champagne to Tooheys Red.

2022 and 2023 the issue was both coach and roster and a board doubling down on a decade of mistakes.
2024 - the issue was roster and the continued effects of a losing culture of mediocrity within a core group of players bred by over a decade of neglect. I'm pretty sure Flanno's year 2 and year 3 stats will blow Coke guzzling Griffin's stats out of the water. Let's revisit it then.
FMD ease up there champ.

The stats I provided are for consideration as to what needs to be better for us to become a top 8 side nothing more nothing less.

Anytime I post about improvement you get on your soap box defending S F as you think I'm attacking him.
Whilst he is certainly not my cup of tea I'm not advocating he be sacked and in fact the only sacking I have called for was Dean Young and on the basis of the statistics I am providing that sacking is more than merited IMO.

In your efforts to defend S F you arc up at any reasonable analysis that might even remotely suggest something is worse than what it was before.

In 2022 we won 50% of our games and didn't make the semis and at very best this year we can win 50% of games and we still wont make the semis.

The only way to be better than a 50% result overall is to outscore your opposition and win more games and in 2022 on average that would have been an extra 18 points per game and in 2024 it is now 26 points so has the task become easier or harder considering that in 2022 and 2024 when we lost games we scored and average of only 14 points?

And comparing years with different variables, injuries, suspensions, some inside some outside our control is flawed with danger

It’s not about hating S F it’s about understanding the task at hand.

The task has become harder due to the differential increasing significantly in our losses.

But you and a few others can’t get your head around that and seem to think that pointing out what must change is some kind of disloyalty.

You and old mate @ since 77 and a few others are dismissive of any analysis that you interpret as criticism and want me and others to bask in the sun on the back of a few good results.

Well I suggest you best send that message to S F himself because he just blew up in the dressing room and abruptly left the presser after apologizing to the fans and sponsors for the shit hat has been happening during the season and plainly stated that he has had enough and it has to stop. If that attitude is good enough for him then it's more than good enough for me.

I'm not sure that S F (all credit to him for his presser) has got his beach hat, sunnie's and 40+ lotion on basking in the pissy little bits of improvement you seem to think are there, moreover I suggest he is working on fixing that which is totally unacceptable under any circumstances and will be ripping up contracts, planning the hardest pre-season ever and looking to get some assistant coaches with some f**king ability not to mention a player or two.

S F unlike you is firmly in the "not happy Jan" camp and knows that some crucial losses were on the back of absolutely pathetic effort and that hurts him more and is no compensation for any joy that might come from any improvement and on that basis I could almost get to like the boy.

I will give S F credit for proving the media idiots wrong in that we were not a spoon side but it must be said those same clowns had us easily making the eight at varying stages of the season and even picked us (almost odds on) to beat the Roosters on Anzac Day so their judgement was f**ked in the 1st place, so in the end not it was not that hard to prove them wrong.

Thanks @Old Timer
It has taken a while as you have got over your Flanno the character bashing which you were entitled to but..
you have finally confirmed all that I have and others have been saying all along. We have the right man at the helm and he is pointing us in the right direction and has slightly and will improve things.
Its great you have come back and jumped on board like a true Peaky boy.. Go the Hawks.

Just on the Hawks we had an end of season trip away to Taree and stayed at Fotheringham's Hotel.

No one was of legal age to drink but the publican didn't worry to much about that he just wanted to make sure no one (good old noone) was bonking his daughter.

In true Peakhurst Hawks style our bus was adorned by a set of bras courtesy of you know who lol.

When word got out about the antics our manager "Choko" was supposed to give us a stiff talking too but I think he was the wrong bloke for the job as he had been slipping young Bucko a few at the pub up the road.

Halcyon days indeed.

Great pub in the old days Bonnie the barmaid knew all the regulars drink you never had to tell her.

Go to the TAB across the road upstairs in the shops. Hand write the betting slip (min bet 25c) blue paper NSW and pink paper for Vic

Back over to the pub a $1 would get you 5 middies and a game of pool.

If you got a couple of winners back over to collect and get a combination short soup from the Chinese restaurant then back to the pub.

I remember when big Henry Tatana was the bar useful who handed out a couple of decent hidings to the so called local tough guys.

Geez you are a fair bit older than me $1 for 5 middies and a game of pool.?
I have forgotten but the last I remember were $1 schooies.
It was around 79/80 I was a young 15 yr old lad starting on my great journey of Tooheys New.
Still on it.
