Sharks close in on worst attack ever

CRONULLA are on the cusp of becoming the worst attacking team in the history of the NRL.
One more disastrous performance against the Roosters tonight and it will be official.

Their dismal average of 2.18 tries per game after 11 matches in 2010 is second only to the Western Suburbs team (2.17 tries per game) of 1999.

They are the only club to have averaged less than 2.5 tries per game in 10 seasons.

The figures provided by Fox Sports Stats show Sharks coach Ricky Stuart is set to leave Cronulla in a worse spot on the field then when he came to the club in 2007.

"You look at that list and all the team's around them, they're from another era," Fox Sports statistician Ian Collis said.

"It's pretty damning considering the game's moved on and attack is more prevalent now.

"With this weather, it's quite likely [they'll fall below the Western Suburbs of 1999], the Roosters might give them a towelling."

The stuttering Cronulla attack has deteriorated with increasing speed during the three and a half seasons Stuart has been at the helm.

They have averaged the lowest number of tries per match in every season since the start of the 2008 premiership.

The club's key performance indicators don't give fans much hope this trend will reverse by the time Stuart's tenure as coach expires in October.

In 2010 the Sharks are ranked:

* LAST for points scored;

* LAST for tries scored;

* FOURTEENTH for line breaks made, and;

* THIRTEENTH for busted tackles.

This is the bluntest attack in the competition.

The Sharks also have the poorest conversion rate of scoring a try from strong field position. This season they have spent 218 tackles inside their opposition's 20m line and have scored just 16 times. This is a ratio of one try per 14 tackles inside their opponent's red zone.

Remarkably, this is only slightly lower than the Eels.

Parramatta, who sit equal eighth on the ladder and are still considered third favourites for the premiership, average one try for every 13 tackles inside the 20m line.

The players gameplan where we scored 4 points last week certainly helped boost our average.

Was the players? Redback said it was Flannos. FMD I'm confused.
I am sure this is good publicity for Ian Collis's Stats business but its just a shame that he didn't highlight how the Western Suburbs team & the Sharks of the last 2 years have been down on troops to such an extent that the Reserve grade players are borrowed & play out of another clubs home ground. I had a mate who had a bit to do with that Wests side of 99 & he told me some guys were playing for match payments only. Something like $750 a game. FMD Sounds like a club that is carrying 4 or 5 season ending injuries for 2 consecutive years & having to use borrowed players to make up the numbers as is our case.
That doesn't quite translate in the stats does it.

Reef I know what you getting at, and I agree to an extent but I simply cannot look at our side we have and see a wooden spoon team. I just can't. I think we have a very very good side, especially in our forwards. You lot love Barrett, I don't but he is a capable 5/8 i guess and is a rep player. And our backline is young and keen (except fergo) and have just as much talent as a canberra, panthers, knights, warriors, broncos, eagles cowboys or titans

If we are very very good, then how good are Melbourne, Parra(smashed melbourne last night) Dragons, Penrith, Tigers, Titans, Souths etc etc.
What about the Dogs? are we better than the team that finished top 4 last year? We win tonight, we will be ahead of them. What has changed?
I will tell you what. 2 key players in Greg Eastwood & Hazam El Masri, left that team. That just 2 players from top of the table to the bottom.
I will say it again. 2 KEY PLAYERS.
Add 2 KEY PLAYERS to the Sharks this year & our POSITION could well be different. I agree that we have a good squad. It jsut that it is deficient. That deficiency can be the difference between top of the table & bottom of the table.
Do you get my drift yet?

You have absolutely no idea to the point where you are becoming embarrassing. How you can sit there and think it has nothing to do with Stupid amazes not only me but that majority of people with half a brain.

Our stats will have improved by seasons end.

It's not our squad that is responsible for those stats it's the style of play Ricky Stuart imposed on the team.

In the past two weeks the team has played a different style.

It has involved more of a passing game and with more adventure.

It has been enjoyable to watch for a change.

We scored 22 points against Parra and won and we scored 4 points against Brisbane and lost. Unfortunately our handling let us down against Brisbane and we bombed at least 3 tries with poor decisions. It happens. But we had every chance to win the game unlike most of the other games this year where it has been over at half time and never looked like winning under Ricky's old boring style.

Since the players were told to go out and enjoy themselves and don't die wondering you can sense there are points in us. I'm sure we'll compete against an in form Roosters side tonight as we will with most sides that we play till seasons end.

The future is looking much brighter now as attack now holds greater priority.

We'll be far from that unwanted stat by the end of season 2010.

FMD Dragon Slayer has never played the game at any level. Handling errors cost us against the Broncs. That happens. Unless Ricky is the coach.. hahah you pathetic farkwit.

At times it has.

Not always.

In fact in the past year and a half our completions haven't been that bad but we haven't scored any points because the ball got "locked up".

Last week our handling did let us down and we crucified 3 dead set trys.

But at least we weren't boring to watch and the fans knew the players had a real dig and didn't clock off at half time like in previous matches.

Don't forget we had two tries lost through last line desparate grabs of the tails of jerseys.

Locky on Trent and whoever on Gordon.

Such is the beast called rugby league and such is the story of our lives when it comes to the Sharkies.

This thread would not of even been started "if" those two tries went our way.

Cheers

Those 2 opportunities would of made the Sharks average tpm 2.36

The story still would of been written. Eventually
