GALLEN'S ROLE WITH KEARNEY

THE Cronulla Sharks are hoping to meet with bad boy Todd Carney and his agent David Riolo this week.

The ace up their sleeve is the game's most improved character - skipper Paul Gallen. There would be no better bodyguard or mentor in rugby league than the NSW State of Origin captain.

Gallen's reputation was almost as badly trashed as Carney's several years ago.

He's now one of the most respected figures in the game.

Gallen has gone from being probably the most hated player in the game to the most appreciated.

I spoke to Gallen a few weeks ago about getting Carney aboard. He's keen and he wants to help the kid.

Sharks coach Shane Flanagan wants him too.

They've now got to convince their chairman Damian Irvine that it's a risk worth taking.

if Damo doesn't sign Carney then his position on the board should be questioned.
the question is: Do we want to improve our playing roster?
the answer : YES
solution: sign Carney

Imo i dont know if we could handle the pressure if he was to stuff up. There would have to be a lot of boxes ticked to get at the sharks, abut as the reefster has said what does he want to do.
It is no good getting him for the sake of it his heart has to be in it.

The club has experience with this sort of thing in Tim Smith.

Smith had similar, but nowhere near as bad, problems as Carney.

He made promises and assurances to the coaching staff that he would turn his life around and "play his heart out for the club", get off the drink, get help, be engaged in the community blah blah blah.

He never did any of it. Now he is being well paid to play NSW Cup. We are struggling to get rid of him.

If you oversaw that whole debacle, would you be keen to jump into bed with Carney, who is far, far worse?

I understand that POV Newman, but Carney has one thing in his corner - in 2010 he was awesome, hell even this year he played some great games.
He has alot more talent than Tim Smith, and Gallen would end his life if he fugged up

He can play. There is no doubt about that. Im just trying to give some context to people on how decisions are made from within the club. Things are very seldom as simple as they appear on the outset.

"Can we really afford to do damage to our brand? What about our young halves who we have invested in and made assurances to? Is Tim Smith going to spiral into depression if and when we sack him? Roosters admin have emphasised to me personally that he is a liability and not worth the risk."

This would all be flying around in Irvine and Mooneys heads. Gal and Flano only have to worry about footy.

I don't know if Gal would be able to stop carney. He's a family man now and likely won't be around to slap the little turd at 3am when he needs it.

Still....fugg it. I'd take him.

Sign him up for sure.... then once he has signed slap him up real hard BEOFRE he farks up. Then tell him if he farks up again then he will get worse.

Old school I know, but it worked for me and a lot of others in this room I take it.

Not problems Newman....choices. He won't stay off the booze (despite huge incentives to do just that) not beacuse of addiction but because he chooses not to. My guess (and it's just that) is he feels he has fullfilled whatever he wanted to get from the game by getting the Dally M and palying in a GF. Maybe SOO and winning a GF remain on the list but Ithey aren't tasty enough carrots. The issue for me is can the Sharkies focus this c**ks mind long enough to win us a premiership and can he fit into the playing group? Forget about keeping him off the drink, he has to want that.

hmmm. AFter nearly winning them a grand final last year, he has been seen out 3 times drinking this year. He hasn't driven intoxicated, bashed anybody, taken drugs, been punting on the NRL or fixing matches.
During this year his main issues have been;
1: a serious niggling injury that probably should have ended his season before it started.
2: an incident at the club that put him right in the middle of what was an humuliating situation & in the washup, made his position in the club unteneable.
3: Being hounded by the media no matter which way he turns, as they dig & dig in hope of seeing him fail.

The protection that the Cowboys will offer him may well swing it in their favour.

Thats one way of putting it. If he was such an angel, the roosters would have kept him.

His biggest problem is that when he is on the drink, he is an obnoxious loudmouth. He has put alot of people at that club offside. Players and admin.
