Bennett's 4 year legacy: First series in charge failed to make the 4nations final. Took England to a WC final in 2017, just. Sadly we looked like we hadn't practiced passing to each other and whilst defence was resolute, and tbf best I've seen in a long time, our attack was terrible and meant a win was always unlikely. 2019 absolute disaster of a GB tour, just plain embarrassing, nothing more to be said.
Throughout his reign picked very avg Australian players to play in positions they were unsuited for suggesting he had little faith in English player quality.

So basically three major tournaments in his 4 years and failed in them all. Here end'th the Bennett years.

Making the final in 2017 was something but tbh you're right, they were pretty average through the pool games and only really got lucky against Tonga, the win coming on a knife-edge refs call.
The last 4 years have seen regular baffling squad and game day selections.

He did instill a grit and intensity that was certainly lacking under McNamara but his conservative selection policy saw a boring, stunted attack which continually failed to put up points.

Perth Red telling one side of the story like usual.
2016 - has to be called a failure, yes. Poor tournament all-round.
2017 - A clear success. 'Just' made the final? By that logic they 'just' lost the final. 2017 was the best England has been since they returned to England full time, except for maybe 2018.
2018 - Won 3 of 4 matches against NZ, including the home 3-test series.
2019 - Garbage.

His downfall was the selections/performance last year.

No surprise, it seems like he ran out of ideas and selecting players based on their heritage rather than home grown was obviously unpopular in England. In saying that selecting Austin on the wing and Hastings at halfback sums up how poor he was for GB.

Nicely summed up here.
Despite making the final in 2017 - his record has been poor.

When Bennett took over from Steve McNamara in 2016, England were the second best team in the world. They are now probably fourth best. Bennett was beaten in his last five internationals, with Great Britain losing all four of their matches on tour last year and England going down 34-0 to New Zealand in their most recent match back in 2018. To make matters worse he oversaw defeats to Tonga andPapua New Guinea, meaning the Lions tour was the first time a Great Britain or England side had lost to opponents other than Australia or New Zealand since Wales beat England in 1995 – a run of 50 successive wins. Anyone can lose to Tonga – Australia did, too – but would the Kangaroos have then lost again three weeks later in Papua New Guinea? Like McNamara, Bennett lost all his games against Australia and his record against the Kiwis was mediocre: three wins, four defeats.

I hate how Bennett supporters say he got them to the 2017 WC final, FFS they only had to beat France & Lebanon to progress through the group and played a weak PNG in the QF.
Fell over the line v Tonga and were average in the final with no flair whatsoever. Bennett was a disaster.

NZ falling to pieces in their campaign is the main reason England made the final, lets be real.
