Well said Voltron
The culture that everyone talks about in Newcastle has been for the past 5 years "I am a local product. I will work hard in juniors to get into FG then I can sit there for the next 10 years and get paid no matter how badly I play."
This is partly due to the reaction of the fans when the club made a hard decision in 2000 not to re-sign Matthew Johns due to cap and age. The backlash scared the club into retaining the locals at all costs. The personel problems were hidden by having the best player in the world running around until his form started to go down then we were exposed in 2004 and 2005.
Smith is going to make those hard decisions again for the good of the club and we as supporters need to give him a chance and see what the results are in the next few seasons. The players at other clubs play for thier spots, but Newcastle players seem to think they receive there spots through geographical birth.
Time for the Knights to become a professional outfit.
Time Clint Newton became a professional.
If you are working as a contractor somewhere you hate you work out your contracted period and then move on. This situation smells very fishy, how do Melbourne get a contract drawn up and presented in one day and so conveniently after they lose two top level forwards. Newcastle should not have given Clint a release from his contract, they should have withheld Clint's payments for not attending is required work and stopped him from playing anywhere else unless he was headed to England.
