Dugan close to finalising deal with Dragons

Josh Dugan is on the verge of returning to the NRL after his manager met St George Illawarra officials on Wednesday to finalise a contract with the joint venture club. A source close to the deal told Fairfax Media that Dugan's manager, Paul Sutton, held talks with Dragons chief executive Peter Doust and recruitment manager Craig Young on Wednesday afternoon to settle the details. The NRL is yet to receive the contract from the Dragons for registration but it is understood St George Illawarra could announce his signing as early as Thursday.
The NRL has given no guarantees it will sign off on the contract immediately, but the Dragons hope to have the troubled fullback in their side for the round-nine clash with the Gold Coast Titans on May 12. It's understood the deal is for the rest of 2013 plus another two years, but that several clauses have caused delays.
The Dragons are wary of Dugan, who was sacked after round one by the Raiders due to a string of disciplinary breaches, bringing them into disrepute with his off-field behaviour, and are ensuring they are legally covered.

They have been in negotiations with him since the
Broncos tore up their $2 million offer to him a month ago.
Dugan will not receive the $650,000 a season he did at the Raiders but it is understood the Dragons are only making an offer for the rest of this season with an option for the subsequent two seasons. The deal was jeopardised when allegations surfaced that Dugan had been involved in a brawl after a funeral in Canberra three weeks ago, but the 22-year-old has denied any involvement in a physical altercation.
The Dragons have also expressed some interest in dumped Canberra halfback Sam Williams, who will play for Mounties in the NSW Cup this weekend. Williams remains in Canberra's long-term plans and the club hopes to sign him to a new deal, despite the 22-year-old being dropped from the NRL squad just one match after making his representative debut.
The Raiders have finally made an offer and it is understood they will meet his manager in the coming days to try to finalise an extension.
''His manager's coming down and [Williams] wants to stay,'' Raiders coach David Furner said. ''Sammy said himself, he can't have that sort of game [he had against the Cowboys], you've got to have consistency. He's competing against three other halves, there's competition there.''
Meanwhile, Dragons captain Ben Creagh is certain the club can win another premiership in the next three years after he re-signed with the club on Wednesday. Creagh succeeded title-winning 2010 captain Ben Hornby this season and after his contract extension he will almost certainly play out his career in the Red V.
His re-signing comes after the Dragons committed to keeping coach Steve Price in the short term as well as luring Melbourne playmaker Gareth Widdop and Canberra's Joel Thompson to Wollongong next year.
Refusing to rule out their chances of lifting the trophy in October, Creagh is adamant the Dragons are showing they are on their way back to the top. ''I think the signings we've made in the past week or so shows the club is doing all the right things,'' he said.

Starting to look good now Dugan, Widdop possibly Chase or Williams plus Thompson, could possibly be the greatest recruitment drive by the club.

I hope so Minh. Been supporting this club for over 40 years and have been so frustrated with our lack of quality recruiting. Our club should be the pinnacle that every player aspires to play for.

problem been ,now what happens to quinlan & cummins?

Short term we will have great depth. Better to be looking at it rather then looking for it. Both are still young and developing. Quilan is probably glad to have a contract at this stage not sure about Cummins he has had a lot of smoke blown up his arse so he might have his nose out of joint.

One plus for signing Dugan is that it also solves our problem at centre for next year as well. As Beale can easily slide in there when Cooper gives it away this year (presumably) if we can sign Rangi Chase as well then we are looking at a very formidable team for 2014.

1. Dugan 2. Morris 3. Beale 4. Runicman 5. Nightingale 6. Widdop 7. Chase 8. Hunt 9. Rein 10. Weyman 11. Creagh 12. Frizell 13. Merrin.
14. King 15. De Bellin 16. Cooper 17. Thompson.

So Thompson signed to play from the bench did he?

We are a great club and we seem to be recruiting nicely and even though we are making some big signings there doesn't seem to be a reckless approach like some other NRL clubs rushing in and signing everyone. I think there is a lot of thought put into them and i would love to see the end result even though it's quite inevitable that we may lose some players in the current roster. with Dugan it is possible that we can make the finals this year and if we get Chase as well we might give it a shake.

Dugan could be one of the best dragons signing of the last 20 years. He is the best fullback prospect of his generation. He has a incredible ability to almost always beat the first man. We all know what an amazing footy player he is when he is committed but it's the intangible attributes that really set Dugan apart from most footballers, he is simply a clutch player and relishes the big occasion, he always performs well in big games. It's been along time since the dragons had a go to player.

Josh Dugan ... set to return to the NRL with St George Illawarra[/B]

Controversial fullback Josh Dugan has been pulled from the NRL wilderness and thrown a one-year life line by St George Illawarra.

Dugan's manager, Paul Sutton, held talks with Dragons chief executive Peter Doust and recruitment manager Craig Young on Wednesday afternoon to finalise the details of the deal.

NRL 360 host Paul Kent revealed the former Origin star is likely to announce the deal on Friday which will include a clause that he stays off social media.

Behavioural issues cost the 22-year-old his $700,000 a year contract at Canberra where he was in his third season of first grade in the nation’s capital.

A social media outburst on instagram where Dugan sensationally told a Canberra fan to ‘end themselves’ saw Brisbane back out of a 2 million dollar deal but having apologised for the brain snap, attending counselling sessions and meetings with the NRL, he looks to have saved his career.

as it stands Jamie Soward is the greatest Dragons recruit of the last 20 years bar none, let's hope the new generation of signings can match this, Dugan joins the club as a genuine elite player of super star status when focussed. Go Dugan!!!

Looking a more formidable line up...but imo we still could do with another prop or two

Surely he deserves a crack at starting in front of Runciman!

I thought he was more of a second rower than a centre, I think IMO anyway he will only play that position as a stop gap, around SOO time if there are injuries etc. But for the record I think he will be a starting player regardless.

I believe Runicman is being groomed as our future centre, might even get a game or two this year, very high wraps.

I think weyman will leave, creagh will then move into the front row therefore opening up the second rower position for Thompson.
