I read today that Tim Smith wants to come back to Australia and the NRL next season, we MUST make a play at him. Mullen and Smith in the halves would destroy teams, I really, really hope we make an offer to him.

On a one year contract match payments only and on the understanding if he so much sneezes at the wrong time his gone, are the only circumstances I'd be happy to see him @ the club.

I honestly don't think that would attract anyone of his caliber to the club. I would offer him 2-3 years 200-250kish a season with an option in the clubs favour if he stuffs up.

Have a look at the table Big Tim.

Semi finals last year and beaten only by the Roos this year.

Central are in the top three sides these days.

Wests on the other hand, despite the big cheque book, are not looking so flash.

I am hearing that young Delany wont be playing U19 this week though.......

I am aware of that now..... but I still cant look at Central as a "successful" team ATM.

I would love them to be, but it, to me, just doesnt seem the butcher boys way. I know they have done real well with the Knights NRL draft...... picked very smartly.

They got two U20 players who have played four games between them.

'Smart' is one way to look at it :)

I know what you mean though, two good seasons does not make a successful team.

Dribbler Danny Weidler said on the Footy Show that Chase Stanley is expected to head to the Melbourne Storm next year.

Yet another ' target ' the Knights thought they would sign up will end up elsewhere?

Yeah but then again that was all speculation from people over the internet, I didnt read one article that had a quote from anyone indicating we were in talks with him let alone close to signing him.

Mustn't have looked too hard.

In the same article Barry Toohey wrote about Leeson Ah Mau, he mentioned how the Knights were heavily chasing Stanley and were well advanced in discussions...

It was Sunday Tele, and Toohey is spot on 99.9% of the time. A link is not possible to put on here, as his columns are not always put on the net.

And then this quote from this link

http://www.theherald.com.au/news/lo...ut-for-early-release/1550340.aspx?storypage=1

" If Vuna found a new home, it may free up funds under Newcastle's salary cap for Dragons youngster Chase Stanley, who has reportedly held preliminary discussions with the Knights. "

yeah I read the Toohey column.

we have to face it that no one in demand is going to come here when they have an option that isn't Canberra, unless we are paying big dollars or they already know the place / lifestyle.

Only guys looking for opportunity (Hilder, Fuss, Houso, Lulia) or lured by overs (Wicks, Cross, Little Doogs) end up here.

Karma is right on this one.

Can we change it? Probably not unless we get a marquee coach.

I think the problem is the perception that Newcastle is a drab place to live and that the lifestyle on offer is poor.
This is a false perception in for the football players, who get to live in quality suburbs at far less cost than living in Sydney.

Having a coach that is annually the league's most unpopular, doesn't help either.

Perception is reality unfortunately.

Canberra, Nth Qld and until recently St.G/Illawarra have the same issues in regards to attracting players. Unless players are from the area originally they generally think that capital city teams offer more in terms of lifestyle. The Titans will be in the same boat in a few years when they lose the start up cap concessions and can no longer afford to chuck cash at players.

Short of signing Wayne Bennett, what else can be done?

Canberra have had issues absolutely.

But Nth Qld?

Luke O Donnell? J.T.? Willie Tonga? Antonio Kaufusi?

Titans didn't get any cap concessions??

and NQ struggled until they had that breakout year - until what was it about 2003/4?

face it, us and Canberra are last on the "places I want to live" scale for players.

Canberra I understand, but Newie is an awesome place to live (unless night life is your be all and end all).

Aside from LOD, who was hardly a big name player before signing with the Cows, they are all from Qld. I believe I said that locals are an exception
