Nth Qld havent looked anywhere near like winning a comp, despite having a formidable forward pack, with a top shelf full back (bowen) and centre (tonga) and we want to throw millions at him  too funny

Our current players have done us pride, and will do us pride in the very near future

If they didn't try and compete for JT you'd have a winge. Now they are throwing their hat in the ring you're bagging them out. FFS

Not really bagging them out Gronk. I just can't see Thurston going to any team for less then 700 thousand, since he already has an offer of 600 on the table from the Cowboys and he is holding out for more.

There is no point in offering the same amount because he has stated that his preferred option would be to stay with the Cowboys.

Now can you really see us or any other team for that matter raising 700 or more for one player under this salary cap.

If we able to sign JT even loosing a couple of players with his leadership we could blood a few players from Wenty etc look at what Horo has done in just 2 games we always have great Juniors look how many of our Juniors are playing at other NRL clubs...

No doubt he can be brilliant, but he aint worth 600k.

Look at the last NRL 10 premiers. No premiership winning halfback can compete with Thurston, except for A Johns, 2001.

He would be a good signing, but not at the expense of 3 or 4 players.

Problem is you have to find more than a few juniors and keep them when you have 2 players eating most of your cap.

I think we are better served picking up some more depth in the forwards.

Come on Jess. They have a top side. You just don't like JT.
Vengey... i don't see anything in my post where i expressed dislike towards the little rat?? :)D)

You're right of course, i don't like him, but that's a personal feeling he gives me (ie: The sh*ts!). I can separate that from a professional stand point and agree that he's an amazing player who deserves as much credit as he gets..

HOWEVER!! (you knew that was coming, right)

HOWEVER, that doesn't change the fact that the Cowboys have not dominated the competition in the time while JT's been their halfback. They've made ONE Grandfinal...
He's doing everything he can, and they win alot of games off his efforts, but the fact is with his salary taking up most of their cap, they can't afford to put the players around him he needs to win a premiership.

I would rather a team with Salary spread a bit more evenly then that thank you! :D

Does NQ really have a formidible forward pack?

O'Donnell - when fit - is a four-star backrower, with Scott the next best as an emerging frontrower. Southern used to go alright but is well past it now. They have a couple of up and comings (I rate Rapira and apparently Tamou is a rising star) and one over-rated hack in Mason. Otherwise, they are a pack of bludgers. Kafusi and Manakafoa (spelling) are lazy.

I actually think their recruitment is poor and they don't have as many junior players coming through as you'd think they would. They have also had diabolical luck in terms of injuries.

What NQ do have is a good, smart hooker. Aaron Payne is quality.

I'd welcome Thurston to the Eels, but it would have an impact on team balance. He would fit much better into a team like the Eels, though, where good young kids are developed. Instead of us buying guys and our juniors going elsewhere and kicking on ... they would get a run earlier with us and then MAYBE even get themselves a premiership (better with us than with the Storm or Manly or the Bulldogs dammit).

he'd definitely be my first buy of the year. screw the re-signs, let them fight over the scraps. he's the kind of player when you're down by 12pts, you still have a decent chance to pull out a win. never gives up, never doesn't put in.

Agree. He's always first chasing the kick. Always there in cover. A great asset for any team.

the problem with north queensland is too many injuries to key players whenever they have looked like making a decent charge to the finals in previous years. They have been struggling without Matt Bowen at the back and they can never seem to find a long term 5/8.

If you had a smart coach and board, you could easily build a team around thurston, despite him taking a chunk out of the cap. Halfbacks been a problem position for us for years why not take a punt on luring the best 7 out there to the club. We are here to win football games not nice guy contests.

thats a very interesting point...and sounds similar to a melb or a brisb...id be happy to take that chance just quietly....name me the last team that one a grand final without a recognised quality half/5-8th?

every team has at least one, Broncos had Lockyer with Perry, Storm had Cronk with Geyer. etc etc. on of the halves has to get a great player not having 2 average players, last year we had 2 average players but if morts continues to improve from last year then we will have a one great half.

Thurston. The thought of Thurston combining with Hayne makes me happy.

If Thurston = 700k

then we need to lose

cayless 450k
Mateo 280k?

We could keep Inu and Grothe. But rather I'd wait a couple more years keeping Mortimer and Keating to see if they develop into stars or go for another solid halfback in Cronk, Prince, Pearce

Thurston would be a brilliant signing. Seriously - we've struggled in the halves for years, and getting the best in the game would be a MASSIVE coup. I'm not holding my breath, though.

What good will Thurston be behind a pack of forwards that cannot bend the defense? Thats what the biggest problem is.. Not getting a roll on...

Don't be so paranoid pete. Teams that win comps are those that make astute purchases. It's no secret that we really haven't had a comp winning half since Sterlo, and hence, we've won no comps.
We are the Eels. We will ALWAYS have a a decent amount of home grown talent. Whether we get Thurston or not.
If we win a comp because of it, I don't care. There'll still be the Hayne's and Reddy's and Hindmarsh's and enough other's for me to call us the Eels.
