Why move them to Adelaide? Alliteration is lame, and Perth would be a better prospect. Western Sharks doesn't sound so bad.

Perth looks like it'll be getting its own NRL spot soon enough without a relocation. Adelaide on the other hand doesn't really have a plan and a relocated club would be a good way to expand the game there. The Adelaide Sharks has a nice ring to it, not to mention that it's representative of the region (Great White capital of Australia).

Which is the whole problem. There are a bunch of Sydney clubs, not just the Sharks, who are content with mediocrity. Look at what the Titans have done in 2 years and then look at some of the Sydney clubs who've been around for 40 years or more.

how much money did the gold coast recieve to set up a team??

the stadium they built was built for them not by them, how could it have been built by them they could not have raised that much funding in a year in the comp...

its idiotic to compare a 1 city team with a sydney club...

Always with the excuses. The Titans had to fight harder than any other sports club in Australia to join the NRL. If the Sharks had to join in 2007 the NRL would have laughed at them.

Do you really think that the QLD government built a brand new stadium without examining the Titans business plans? The Titans got the money to build that new HQ/training facility from their own backers. The Titans are the ones who own the GC sporting market because of the marketing and PR they've done.

There are a bunch of Sydney teams with bigger catchment areas than the Titans have got, not to mention a few decades head start, yet they are on the brink of financial crisis.

The Gold Coast recieves the same NRL grant other teams do, nothing more. All other money was raised through private funding.

The QLD government had to build Skilled Park for the team to be accepted into the NRL, the NRL was adement that the Gold Coast wouldn't be included unless they had a dedicated rectangular field to play out of. It would have been political suicide for the government not to build it.

Pretty much all the other states in Australia are far more receptive to the value of professional sport to the economy, community and so on than NSW.

Any team that played games in SA or WA and had a long term plan to commit there in some capacity would find they would receive some sort of state government support to do so which would help cover the costs of doing so. This is how the AFL is able to say send its 3 games to Canberra or Gold Coast, it gets part of the money through the government and then tops it up with some of its own.

lol, not really, they probably could have threatened to burn every GC league stadium to the ground, piss on the ashes and they'd still win every election for the next 100 years. The GC is already a liberal stronghold anyway, what did they have to lose.

I'd be worried though if I was a GC fan, sure things are going well now, but don't doubt for a second with those ridiculous high ticket prices that support would last if the team had a few rough years. A with the fans gone so would the private investment. But hey things are going great for them now and good luck to them.

I think the Sydney clubs that are still around have weathered worse than what is currently going on.

Adelaide thing could only work if the Adelaide people thought of the Sharkies as their own team. If that can be pushed over to TV ratings than you're on a winner. Unfortunately I doubt that the Adelaide public would even be aware of it if it happened cause we already know what the media are going to do. Don't think if would rate a mention down there.

I've thought for a few years now that the Bulldogs should be trying to link with Christchurch. That would totally work.

i believe that at some stage maybe within 5-8 years, the sharks, dragons & steelers will all be one team.

i thought about a year after the saints / steelers merger, that at some atge the sharks would be incorporated.

i hope it doesn't happen - but i feel that's where it's headed.

And all playing out of upgraded grounds which cost millions and still get 12000 for a game.

What have they done, and this is what the 4th reincarnation of the gold coast side ?

Then we have the Storm, win a premiership, lead the comp and what are their crowds like.

Lets face it Victoria, South Australia and WA are all AFL markets that will never be cracked successfully.

They've rejuvenated RL in QLD, averaging 2nd highest in the NRL (close to the Brisbane Lions even though we have a much smaller stadium), heaps of members, awesome marketing, they own their area like no other team in the NRL.

Melbourne is the hardest sports market in Australia to crack, it's incredibly insular. Getting support for teams in Perth and Adelaide will be a much simpler task, abeit not easy.

Lets face it Victoria, South Australia and WA are all AFL markets that will never be cracked successfully.
We don't need to overtake the AFL in those states, we just need a decent presence there.

How many people now watch RL on TV in Victoria? How much is that worth in terms of sponsorships and media deals? A hell of a lot more than $4mill a year I can tell you!

Strange that EVERY professional sport, except RL, disagrees with you re room in WA for more than just AFL!
