2) the simple question is do you prefer to see a Doctor who knows you , has treated you before or do you prefer to see an Unknown independent Doctor?

In this situation? I'd prefer an Independent doctor no questions asked. They have no reason to be biased in this situation so i know they will be making the decisions based purely on my well being. The club doctors have more pressure to get you back on the field because that's what the club wants.

Re Boxing discussion , lol.

anyone who has discussed this example uses the KNOCKED OUT situation to compare to for example Reynolds. The appropriate comparison , is PUNCHED in the HEAD and wobbles against the ropes or goes down for a count to regather and then gets up to continue fighting.Which happens ALL the time in a boxing bout.

Reynolds was not knocked out , he was up fairly fast and then wobbled and was taken off for a breather , recovery and testing. He was off for 12 minutes which equate to 3-4 boxing rounds.

If you hit the deck then are wobbly on your feet for five or six seconds (like Reynolds) its fight over and you probably arent even sparring for 3 months.

Finally learnt their lesson eh?

what was the lesson??? if the doctor thinks it is safe for a player to play, then he will allow that player to play. if he doesn't think the player should play, then he won't let that player play. nothing that any of you say on here or anywhere else is going to influence or pressure the doctor at all. the fact that luke didn't play on proves certain people's theories on here were wrong :)

This is really gonna change the game. We're gonna see at least 3 players counted out per game, if they apply this properly? Not that it isn't a positive change, but they might want to rethink reducing the interchange.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ARL Commission has approved changes to the concussion rules to clarify the circumstances under which players must be removed from the field – and kept off.

Head of Football, Todd Greenberg said the NRL was determined to make changes where necessary to improve player welfare.

He said the new rules will help doctors determine what action should be taken when a player suffers a head injury.

Mr Greenberg said the NRL has fined the Parramatta Eels $20,000 ($10,000 suspended) for its handling of three concussion incidents, including one involving Nathan Peats. The fine relates to the breakdown in procedures to ensure Peats was assessed and treated properly. Following the incidents, the Parramatta club has already moved to step up its compliance with the concussion rules.

No action will be taken in relation to the Adam Reynolds incident as the player was returned to the field following a clinical assessment by the club’s doctor based on the facts before him.

Mr Greenberg said the new rules, which come into force this weekend, will help doctors determine what action should be taken when a player suffers a head injury.

He said that under the new rules some of the players who returned to the field after clinical assessment in the first five rounds would have been prohibited from returning to play.

The rules have been tightened – and made more prescriptive – to make it easier for doctors to make what can be a difficult clinical diagnosis. In broad terms, the new rules stipulate that players must not return to the field if they exhibit any of the following signs:

- Loss of consciousness

- Falling to the ground without taking protective action

- Seizure

- Memory impairment

- Balance disturbance (ataxia)

“Under the strengthened rules, if a player falls to the ground without taking protective action or loses consciousness they are not to return to the field,” Mr Greenberg said.

“There will be no need to undergo further assessments and tests – the player is to sit out the rest of the match.

“This will take the pressure off club doctors because, if players exhibit these signs it is compulsory that they are removed from the field and do not return.”

The changes were developed by the NRL’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Paul Bloomfield and are consistent with best practice nationally and internationally.

The new rules are supported by NRL club doctors.

They also have the support of the Rugby League Players Association which said player welfare should be the top priority of everyone in Rugby League.

RLPA CEO, David Garnsey said: “There can be no half measures when dealing with the safety of players and we want all players to be assessed and treated properly if they suffer a head knock.

“These changes will make it easier for club doctors to make a call and should improve consistency around the concussion procedures.”

So the next time Bird, Luke, or the other diving cats hit the deck motionless after a slap across the face, will this rule force then off?

I hope so, as it will put an immediate end to diving which would be great

lol .... True.

But if it's a free interchange won't we see players faking concussion when it's time to come off? Let the games begin! lol ....

A lot of 2nd half "knock outs" for sure. I could see skeletor Bennett pulling such shit.

A quick adjustment to the rules stating a player that is forced off for the 2nd time in a season misses an automatic month of footy, and 3 times gone for the season. Similar to the rules put on boxers and other contact sports like the NFL when it comes to concussion

if they did something like that, surely it would depend how close together the 2 concussions are

"Balance disturbance" could happen a few times during a game. they should change it to a 6 man bench. refs never send people off these days, so a team could deliberately put a high shot on one of the star players to make him have "balance disturbance" and they are out for the rest of the game, and the number of interchanges allowed should stay at at least 10

They don't send them off but they're still accountable to the judiciary.

But yeah 'balance disturbance' is pretty commonplace in a game of footy.

It will be interesting to see how this is all applied.
