This type of insular thinking reeks of future failure. A former lecturer of mine addressed the rugby league fraternity a few years and warned them that embracing the international game will ensure the growth and future relevance of rugby league. The rugby league people were taken aback by this reality however could see the logic begrudgingly after some convincing.

But this is where the problem lies

The people who run the NRL are only charted to run the Australian elite competition.

While they act beyond this charter - when isdues like the good of the global game come up - they back track quickly to this original charter

Its the ARLC and APRLF we need to get the message to

Which makes one wonder why the Australian pollies are not doing the same?!

Answer :Turnbull "The running, leaping catching game Australian rules."
Shorten an AFL sycophant.
Juiie Bishop a West Coke Eagles tragic.
Payne the defence Minister an AFL fan
Hunt/Pyne from AFL states

As if they would assist a sport, they have little affection for.
Like asking the head of Hezbollah to intercede on behalf of Israel.
The only pollie who would assist is Bob Katter, and people overseas would consider him too eccentric to be serious.Or Albanese ,at least he loves rl.

TBF, if Shorten ever pulls on sports gear, he always goes for the Cowboys shit...

Clearly he is just appealing to the QLD voters, but at least he acknowledges the value of supporting RL. It would be such an easy thing to just stand up and reference this. Its not like they actually need to do anything

Turnbull is a Roosters fan. Their are a fair few federal pollies that follow rugby league?

The people who sent a letter for RLs recognition are the same people fighting for RLs rights in the UK. It's also a parliamentary group fighting to get RL recognised by the UK government so they are more inclined to help out.

RL doesn't have the same fight as in the UK because it's stronger of the two codes in OZ.

The best people to ask help from would be the NRL but I don't think they'd be willing to lend a hand.

That's a real shame if the NRL are ignoring this! It's in the interest of the code going forward. Insular thinking is not required in this scenario.

A convenient Rooster's fan.He gave the AFL a huge rap, describing it as the most exciting sport ,with a few adjectives added.

Understand. He is a politician and that is clearly a vote grabbing stance. Perhaps if he was made aware of this ridiculous non recognition of rugby league a compassionate sportsman based stance may happen. It's worth the effort .

Read all that with a bucket of salt. For eg., Keating was always an RL man - he'd hold his post election functions at Canterbury - but still understood the value of cultivating the AFL states via a professed liking for Collingwood.

Too smart for most of the current mob.

British politicians demand rugby league is recognised as a sport
Steve Mascord

British politicians have written an angry letter to the Global Association of International Sports Federations demanding it recognise rugby league.

Rugby league recently missed out to pole dancing, dodge ball, kettle-bell lifting and foot golf, among others, in being recognised internationally as a sport.

At the time, RLIF chief executive David Collier said rugby union's international governing body, World Rugby, was behind the rejection because it had raised the spectre of a recently formed renegade league organisation, World Rugby League.

"The group has written to GAISF president Patrick Baumann in support of the RLIF's application," the Parliamentary Rugby League Group said.

"The letter notes that the RLIF has 71 national federations as members; the copyright to the rules of rugby league, nines rugby league and wheelchair rugby league; and the trademark on the men's and women's Rugby League World Cups."

Rugby League's application for observer status is to be re-examined this month. Lack of recognition closes off government funding in many countries and even insurance for players.

Parliamentary Rugby League Group chairman Judith Cummins said: "I hope that the General Assembly for International Sports Federations will finally approve the Rugby League International Federation's application and give rugby league the recognition it deserves on the international stage."

But the World Rugby League body run by banned Greek official Pantazidis Anastasios appears to have struck again in Bulgaria.

The organisation has written to the Bulgarian ministry of sport claiming to be the international governing body for rugby league and also questioning the bona fides of a Greek team against whom the Bulgarians were about to play.

Fairfax has seen the letter. The Bulgarian Rugby League is calling for the RLIF and RLEF to take legal action.

In other news, a planned trial involving Melbourne and the Warriors on February 17 in Rotorua has not endangered the World Club Challenge the previous night.

Fairfax Media understands the Storm will split their squad, with half to take on Leeds at AAMI Park and the other half to meet the Aucklanders. The WCC has yet to be formally announced.

And a planned Nines World Cup for October 2019 will not prevent the first full Great Britain Lions tour since 1992.

RLIF sources say the Nines tournament would be played over one weekend at the start of the tour. Home nations players would oppose each other in the Nines then link up for the Lions tour.

Turnbull was known as a tragic Roosters fan in his young years. Still is a fan and goes to games but unfortunately like many in the spotlight he has turned publicly to the media loving AFL and the “in crowd” Swans

I was a union follower in my teens til early 20s FWIW.
What these guys did in the past, has been smothered by the current comments and decisions, including those of Turnbull. Was there a real need to supply the superlatives he did with the AFL?The media with the likes of the australian Patrick Smith use his descrip[tion often.

The likes of John Stanley 2UE (a supposed Dragon's tragic) who gives GWS the thumbs up often.Tony Squires also a Dragon's fanatic gives more pro AFL comments on the Back Page ,which is loaded with AFL panel people.

I understand they have to take a position to appeal to everyman, but from a layman's perspective it comes across as pushing the AFL barrow, much harder than the rugby league one.
At least Howard was consistent, even if you didn't like his politics.

And every comment saying how flipping wonderful a code is by a commentator or politician,is music to the ears of that code's admin and followers.

So still nothing

Once again

NRL/ESL/RLIF needs to invest in a major stall at their conference

And then run a 2h presentation on the merits for playing RL and why RL is a unique global sport, RLPA arangements, drug management, use of technology in sport

These guys want a junket - best way to announce RL is play the game their way

Embarrass them into acknowledging RL
