Stalled and stagnant Sydney clubs

In the long term I would like to see the NRL promote itself more to south-east Asia. Hundreds of millions of people live in the region and it's in our time zone. If we can get SE Asians interested n the game then we could rake in good coin from broadcast deals and possibly promote NRL matches as tourist attractions.

Can you imagine the envy of AwFuL if hundreds of thousands of south-east Asians started holidaying on the Gold Coast, Sydney, Brisbane and Townsville to see the NRL and go for a dip in the ocean?

We need to think big because we have a great game.

I don't know why the Roosters aren't over in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and PNG promoting their brand. Sydney is a global city and everyone wants to live there, so there's potential support from abroad if they market themselves properly.
I mean maybe afl could be envious because we have a team in nz, a team in png and Fiji and are expanding in the pacific

imagine there was an afl fan from Newcastle (australia) going onto afl forums and telling them they should kill off some Melbourne teams for a Newcastle afl team.

how do you think they would be perceived.
Ahh, but Newcastle has a fraction of the population of Perth, and Perth offers the NRL a new timezone, something Newcastle wouldn't give AFL.

Your comparison is ridiculously desperate & flawed.

Of course they care. You can’t rely upon the games existing viewers to pay for a crap club in Perth

we all know that the nrl will never get the same crowds as afl. It’s future tv revenue where we will eclipse afl

so clearly the arlc is looking to add teams that grow tv viewers.

so obviously that’s the dolphins, Ipswich and nz2

Perth isn’t even a consideration because they will not add many new viewers and hence are worth little to adding value for future tv deals

you can’t even argue Perth should get in based on being able to develop juniors because a png bid would do that in spades

you can see why Perth and Adelaide aren’t in the discussion it’s obvious

This is the first time I have heard Ipswich being discussed so I don’t know where you are getting this from.

If you are talking about the Western Corridor bid, that was supposed to be inclusive of Ipswich and Western Brisbane. Moreover, it will never get the go ahead, at least in the short to medium term, because the Broncos won’t allow it. The same reason why the Firehawks didn’t get the go ahead - too much issues with the Broncos and Titans.

The main two areas advocated for an 18th side has been NZ 2 and Perth. Even you would know this, as it has been reported fairly regularly.

I know it is the most ridiculous comparison.

Newcastle has about one quarter of the population of Perth

Depends if there is any money in it; at least with regards to the PNG/Fiji options. At this point in time, unless they miraculously develop into functioning first world societies/economies then I don’t how they are viable.

They're not financially viable options - sure, Super Rugby has Moana Pacifica & Fiji Drua, but that's a different case because a) they already have Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne & Perth teams (plus decent NZ coverage) and b) thus far, their home games haven't been in the islands.

Exactly. Also the average earnings of somebody in PNG is something like $50 AUD, so unless you want to charge something like a $1 AUD to attend their games whilst also underwriting flights, facilities and other costs (which would be huge) then it is a ridiculous idea.

I’m talking about the current teams in Fiji and png

Well there you go. It was not recent and the guy who said it is no longer in charge. So it is an irrelevant comment.

All you’re talking about then is what we are already doing? Yes it is a great idea.

One thing AwFuL would hate is PVL fixing the North Sydney Bears debacle so that Manly and Sydney can claim the North Shore and divide it between them. Something like this would be as valuable as a new team in Perth, NZ 2 or Brisbane 3 as it will strengthen two NRL teams from the business end of Sydney. It would take a generation or two for results to come to fruition, but it would throw a massive wrench in AwFuL's encroachment strategy.

Bears aren't in a position to grow the game and all they're doing is providing a helping hand to our rivals. The Bears aren't coming back. Not in North Sydney or on the Central Coast.

It would be good if Roosters and Sea Eagles went to the ARLC with a plan to divide the North Sydney District in half, with the northern half going to Manly and the southern half going to Sydney, on exchange for both clubs agreeing to fund junior development in the region. If PVL got that done then it will be a huge step in the right direction and allow Manly and Sydney to develop a strategy to counter soccer, onionball and fumbleball.
It'd be great, it's a simple fix for a problem that's been allowed to exist for far too long. The status quo does nothing for the game and any further expansion slots are too valuable to waste on a Bears bid that incorporates the North Shore. PVL has been unafraid to upset people in the racing world before, hopefully he'll ignore the inevitable whinging from Florimo and co and get the North Sydney district redistributed to other teams, just as was done to Newtown in the past.

You should share your obvious wisdom with Vlandys then as I’m pretty sure he mentioned perth first on his recent commentary on the 18th club lol

That’s to keep the wa govt and public happy as the arlc have an origin game there this year to sell out, which will put 20 million dollars in their coffers

Why do you think Fittler also has said he’s a fan of a Perth nrl team ? Lmao

with the increase in sky nz tv deal recently it’s obvious they are going to go with nz2 to get more out of them

as I said before nobody is paying the nrl more for Perth lol

Wow I didn’t know you are so close to Pete that you know what’s behind his words lol. As I said you’re an idiot who doesn’t understand how tv works.

No I just read and listen too what people say rather than make stuff up.

the nz team already has the support of nrl clubs too

the game just doesn’t want to invest in a sinkhole like Perth right now. Not after they have seen how little the storm have delivered.

there are other areas which have a much higher roi.

It will definitely make Manly and Sydney stronger and improve their chances of growing their respective fanbases. If PVL can do that then he will have strengthened Sydney and the game. If he can do this and bring in Perth or NZ2 during his reign then he will be remembered as the best leader we've ever had.
