The very first scene was his first time as our typical Storm Trooper being sent out to kill people, and he didn't even pull a trigger. Right from the start there any chance of selling him as a simple "white uniformed killing machine" went out the window, which was kind of the point, he leaves the First Order because he can't just blindly kill who he is told to kill.

ok, so he cant just blindly kill villagers but seem to have no problem killing his fellow troopers?

That doesn't make any f**king sense.

I agree with Ren - TRAITOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The funny thing is that I'm pretty sure the whole "sanitation" thing was just chucked in for that one gag. Now it's become a big point of criticism. They should have just left everyone thinking he was a run-of-the mill, white uniformed killing machine. Which he obviously was, because why else would you take a sanitation guy on a slaughter mission?

Troopers still gotta shit even when on a slaughter mission you know. And in between the clean-up he probably has to shoot a few villagers himself.

Just saw it then, I had to wait for a friend to finishing watching them as he'd never seen them before. Amazingly I didn't get spoiled anything. Though I got told someone big was dying.

Really enjoyed it even if it was similar to A New Hope. I thought StarKiller base was more intimidating then the Death Star, you got a more personal look on the damage being done rather then just seeing the planet blow up. Also I liked Kylo Ren but the actor doesn't suit him really, I think he could be a prequel Anakin but done much better.

Also had a really left of field thought after it. Rey being Luke's daughter would be really obvious but what if she's a Kenobi? It probably doesn't make sense but it'd be badass.

Han dying was shit man, it was pretty obvious it was coming but didn't hurt any less.

It hasn't opened in China, the biggest market of all, yet either!
Indeed.

I don't know if they're the biggest market though, they have the most people but western pop culture doesn't really translate over there. It'd be big but not like it is out here.

I could be way off though.

Agree on that note. How bad is the actor they cast for him? He's just so weird and geeky looking. Someone said he looks like the offspring of Lady Gaga and Maralyn Manson and that about sums up just how wrong the casting is.

true. He doesn't look very intimidating does he. Looks rather timid and geeky. The type that would probably get bullied at school. But maybe.....just maybe.... that's the angle they are playing with Ren... a geek who seeks power from the dark side to prove the haters wrong... genius casting by JJ.

My 2c on the "Finn should have been destroyed by Kylo" argument...

Finn, sanitation worker or not, was a trained storm trooper. They are clearly trained in all forms of combat judging by the wicket electric nightstick looking thing one of them wields when fighting Finn, so you can expect him to be able to hold his own.

Kylo, on the other hand, is merely a Sith apprentice at this point (it's mentioned at the end that it's time to complete his training). He is never shown to be particularly skilled with a lightsaber (barring a few force blocks of lasers, all he does in the movie is use it as a temper tantrum device). One could argue he has let to be trained in how to use it, and given no Jedi exist in the galaxy his fight with Finn was in all likelihood his first ever lightsaber battle.

It makes sense to me that Finn could hold him off for the few minutes he did before getting his add thoroughly kicked.

It will be great to see what Kylo turns into now that his journey to the dark side is complete by killing Han. To me he is the most complex villain of any Star Wars movie and comes complete with a properly fleshed out back story

He was a student at Jedi school when he turned, after all. Being a loner who can't make friends or was constantly compared to his hero father and mother could certainly be a factor

I'm fairly sure you're joking but it might work.

They obviously had that look in mind when creating the character, a real outcast person. I think it might work, I'm just happy Star Wars is back. I'm such a fanboy though, I can forgive the prequels flaws because lightsabers yo.

I did wonder, why did that trooper have that heavy looking electric stick and shield when you have the option of using a blaster???? its like choosing a sword over a gun... didn't quite understand it unless its used to also knock down walls or doors??

Yeah, I get that might maybe be the angle, but it doesn't come across that way in the movie. They basically just paint him is a spoiled brat.

I think it is all intentional. Make him look weak and wussy now, then much more intimidating in the next two. I mean, he looks more badass in girls than this movie.

He only looked poofy when he took off the mask. I'm hoping he keeps it on next time and takes it off only once to show us a massive badass scar across his face. That will be the scene to remind us all of the ass kicking he got from Rey. He should also save off that long girly hair. Go for a mo hawk or hard core look next time. total transformation. That would be bad ass. Better yet, change actors.

I've got no problem with his appearance. Looks like a potential US mass shooter.

Yeah, didn't someone else already say he comes across like an Elliot Rogers - rich white boy who wanted to kill people because girls didn't like him enough? What a f**king loser.

I kinda agree that's how he comes across... But I don't know if that works as a Star Wars villain, as guys like that you just wanna see put down like the dogs they are. They're ultimately just cowards and we know that punk is going to get ass raped to hell and back in prison, so I'm not sure it's a great archetype for a Sith, particularly one that they're trying to communicate is layered and struggling with their embrace dark side.

The thing that I like about him is that unlike every other Sith that we've seen, he doesn't have control over his anger and is unpredictable. There's been a lot of comparisons to the OT but I think the villain this time around is very different.

Yeah I suppose, but Anakin was a bit like that in the prequels too. I mean he's pretty out of control in the last two in particular, losing his shit massively and murdering a couple of Sand People after he finds his mother for instance (one of the few genuinely interesting scenes from a character development standpoint in the prequels).

In any case, hopefully they flesh him out more in the next movie, because I think it's fair to say he was polarizing and to a lot of people he was pretty pissweak and lame in this one.

Nah if he cuts his hair his ears will be revealed to the world and then we'll have two more Death Stars to deal with.

That's a good point. Three times he showed his inability to control anger - first when he slaughtered the villager, second when Po escaped, and a third time when Rey escaped. They're pretty incompetent, the empire. Not only are they terrible at stopping their Death Stars from getting destroyed by little fighter jets, they're equally as bad keeping their prisoners from escaping. Good help is so hard to find these days.

Speaking of annoying characters, I look forward to seeing General Hux choked or his head sliced off by Ren in the next episode.
