Storm salary cap scandal thread

TBH how could anyone be surprised that their salary cap isn't 1million over the mark?

Slater 350k+ minimum
Smith 450k+ minimum
Inglis 400k+ minimum
Cronk 300k+ minimum
Hoffman 275k+ minimum
Lima 250k+ minimum
Blair 225k+ minimum
White 250k+ minimum

They are obviously guesstimates, but with a squad as good as theirs, it had to be.

All this time we just thought players went there for half the money because they could walk down the street without being recognised .... :)

That said, let's wait until the 4pm press conference before we form any real opinions rather than just haphazard guesses like mine above.

Already noticed that the betting agencies who have kept markets opened have taken enough money on the wooden spoon that in just one day, the Dragons have blown out from $201 to $401 ..... I've never seen longer odds for wooden spoon betting this early in the season!!

LOL, mate has heard a rumour they will lose 44 points, can't see that happening though

That would put them on -36 points. There are 38 points available over the remainder of this year. Perhaps the NRL are taking into account prior breaches that have been uncovered in prior seasons and applying an aggregate points penalty for those seasons as well. I would imagine that being the case that the deficit of points, whatever that might be at the end of the year, will carry over in perpetuity until they are erased with wins.

Far fetched and if that were to happen then it totally taints their achievements and they will go down in infamy.

Anyway. Its all speculation. Probably be 8 points. Come on 4 o'clock!!!!!!!!!

If they do lose a significant amount of points...

Something I thought when the Dogs lost their points and still had games to play...why do teams they have to play against get put in the situation where they are playing a team which has for all intents and purposes been removed from the competition yet can still lose and not get the 2 points in their challenge for the 8 etc?

I guess what I might be saying is that the games would be irrelevent and that the 2 points should just be handed to the opposition, but that'll never happen obviously as they would lose a game from the schedule and the tv...

Those clubs still have to earn their place in the finals. and it is unfair on sides that have already played the storm

Call me cynical but News Ltd will do all they can to make sure any fine/points loss is minimal.

Up until allegations of cheating the salary cap arose, thoughts on the Melbourne Storm were "is their team good enough to win the comp again?" and "can the Dragons, the Eagles etc beat the Storm for the title this year?" Discussions and thoughts were based on the players available to the Storm and their football on the park.

Now it is not a question of personnel, but how they obtained, maintained and retained their personnel off the field. What a SHAME. Melbourne could be praised for having a great club and first-grade team over a number of years, and rightly so... just look at their players and success. To have it all sullied due to the increasing importance placed on off-field endeavours such as corparate appeasement and twisting legalities really does take away from the essence of footy.

(NB I can't stand Melbourne, but for the emphasis to be placed on "salary cap issues" etc does divert, flagrantly, the reasons we all as fans REALLY love our footy.)

Ray Hadley on 2GB saying they'll lose masive comp points and there may be ramifications on their premiership from last year

said a Melbourne journo told him their breach is as big as the Dogs and extends beyond Cameron Smith

FINALLY!!!!! Finally ED!!! NRL might just be on the front page of the Herald Sun!!!!!

pfff they'll never replay a finals series, by that logic we would ahve to replay the whole season cos teams who played and lost to melb twice may have finished furtehr up the ladder...

a lot of speculation, wouldnt surprise me if it's a small breach and this has come from a drunk punter throwing money around. i rememebr a few years ago peopel starting putting money on the roosters for the spoon (when the roosters were at their peak) and the betting agencies shut down..... mind you i dont recall the nrl calling a press conference.

Hadley says it goes back 3 or 4 seasons

info came from a disgruntled employee

could be fine a $million every year for the next 3 years

they will not be able to make the 8

So all their dominance was really bullsh*t. I guess no one can be so consistently successful for so long and keep a core group of stars

If its as big as the dogs, they are fked.

I wonder if we will see melbourne lose one of their star spine players, Slater, Cronk, Smith...

Don't recall that happening to the Dogs when they were caught rorting the cap, they were allowed to re-structure the player payments.
Probably same scenario here.

Ray Hadley just reporting:

- Wont be able to make the 8.

- They may get penalised $1mil per year for 3 years. Could be the end of Melbourne. Looks worse than Bulldogs.

Take from that what we will. 2GB trying to get the conference live.

TBH that's a load of crap, mate.

Nice sentiment .... but the rules are that every club must construct as good a squad as they can within the confines of a salary cap.

What appears to have happened here is that Melbourne have flagrantly breached those rules and intentionally spent over that cap to get a good squad together.

Sure, it is brilliant watching the Melbourne outfit in full swing (as much as I hate them), but if their squad is worth 25% more than it is allowed to be worth ...........

Of course, if their previous squads did not breach the salary cap, there are no issues at this base level per se ... obviously other issues, but that's beside the point.

So stupid. If a club in melb where no one gives a sh*t about league can get third-party deals then so can the other clubs. Open it up imo. Stop this bs.

also 4pm press conf apparently. live link on the dailytele
