THE NRL has called a 4pm press conference to announce details of the Storm’s salary cap breach, amid speculation the penalty may exceed the 37 points stripped off Canterbury in 2002.
Storm chief executive Matt Hansen and chairman Rob Moodie recently left the NRL after an all day meeting to discuss the allegations that have resulted in bookmakers suspending betting on the wooden spoon after a series of bets on Melbourne to finish last.
Hansen and Moodie left without commenting to the waiting media and are beleived to have departed in a News Ltd car.

ouch ! - the description of the car is typical SMH reporting, I wonder if the vehicle will be listed on the salary cap ?

If its as big as the dogs, they are fked.

I wonder if we will see melbourne lose one of their star spine players, Slater, Cronk, Smith...

If they do lose a significant amount of points...

Something I thought when the Dogs lost their points and still had games to play...why do teams they have to play against get put in the situation where they are playing a team which has for all intents and purposes been removed from the competition yet can still lose and not get the 2 points in their challenge for the 8 etc?

I guess what I might be saying is that the games would be irrelevent and that the 2 points should just be handed to the opposition, but that'll never happen obviously as they would lose a game from the schedule and the tv...

I know it's purely speculation at this stage, but what possible ramifications could it have? Strip them of the title? Are we going to replay the finals series sans Melbourne? Perhaps make it a midweek cup throughout the remainder of the 2010 season?

Saints vs Tigers 1 vs 8. Shaping up as a good one.

NRL strips Melbourne Storm of competition points for salary cap breaches

THE National Rugby League has been rocked with revelations reigning premiers Melbourne are set to be docked premierhsip points for systematic salary cap breaches.

The breaches are alleged to pertain to sponsorship caps, with the resulting penalty tipped to be the heaviest handed down in the history of the competition.

Salary cap auditor Ian Schubert is understood to have uncovered the discrepancy during his audit into the Storm’s books relating to third-part payments to skipper Cameron Smith in relation to his media work with Fox Sports.

The punishment is believed to outstrips that given to the Bulldogs in 2002, when they were stripped of 37 competition points and fined $500 000, ruining a season in which they were favoured to claim the premiership.

Melbourne has contested the past four successive grand finals, taking out the title in 2007 and again last year when they beat the Eels in the decider.

As much as I can't stand the Storm it would be a shame to see them have no hope this year. I also find it hard to believe they're over this year because they've got a lot of nuffies like Mcdougal and Finch and a lot of young players.

Ho-ly sh*t. More than 37 points? If it's bigger than the Bulldogs' breach of 2002, then it's only fair. Really, didn't we all suspect it at some point?

Would we have to get all the players we have lost since last year back and remove the gains to make it the same as it would have been?
