Good for the people of hobart who are interested but i doubt there are many of those.

lived there for 3 years just after the hoppa antics, the only positive was it got people talking about league, before that it didn't even make a back paragraph in the sports page.

Waste of time IMO more games to Adelaide/Perth/Bush.

Random fact. I was at that game in 1998 when the storm killed the rams. To be honest we should take advantage of tas being continually f**ked by the afl for expansion. Although the place is pretty much afl brainwashed and a mini Vic. I had a mate who's dad use to captain a local team. Use to get decent crowds at wentworth st park for finals.

LOL with Hobarts bumper population of 212,019 and realistically 50% of them being over 50(everyone who's got anything going for them pisses off to the mainland the second school is done) forget about it!

Well done to all involved.

But these games and long term spreading of the gospel should be the NRL's responsibility. Shame they do not have any future plan for our great game.

RUGBY LEAGUE FOR STATE
The Mercury (Hobart) 27 November 1953

The newly-formed Rugby League of Tasmania announced yesterday Rugby League would be played in the State next year.

Negotiations which proceeded for many months with the Australian Rugby Football League Board of Control in Sydney culminated in the decision to introduce the code to Tasmania immediately.

Rugby League is an international game noted for its spectacular appeal to the public.

Available playing strength already exceeds 100 and is expected to treble before the season begins. Suitable grounds will be made available and there is every likelihood of games being played on Sundays.

Films showing recent international matches will be shown at Heathorn's Hotel next Wednesday at 8 p.m., and Mr. Harold Matthews, secretary of the Australian Board of Control, will address a meeting at Heathorn's Hotel the following Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Bright Future For Rugby League
The Mercury (Hobart) 11 December 1953

Rugby League, which will be played competitively for the first time in Tasmania next year, would eventually take the place of Rugby Union in the State. The secretary of the Australian Rugby League Board of Control, Mr. H. R. Matthews, who is on a five-day visit to Hobart to arrange the introduction of the code in Tasmania, said this yesterday, but added that the game would not displace Australian rules.

The Tasmanian Rugby Football League was formed at a meeting of about 50 at Hobart on Wednesday night. It is hoped about five teams will be fielded next year.

There was sufficient population in Tasmania to support both codes of Rugby, Mr. Matthews said. He believed Rugby League would become more popular than Rugby Union and in time would be the only code played in Tasmania.

There was no chance of Rugby League becoming a major Winter sport in Tasmania, and the Board of Control was satisfied as long as the game was played., Mr. Matthews said.

With the introduction ol Rugby League to Tasmania, the code was now played in all Australian States.

It was hoped to bring international teams to play in Tasmania later.

Mr. Matthews yesterday discussed the introduction of Rugby League into school with the Premier (Mr. Cosgrove). Mr. Cosgrove was "sympathetically inclined," Matthews said.

Rugby League To Start Tomorrow
The Mercury (Hobart) 2 April 1954

Rugby League will have its debut in Tasmania tomorrow with practice games at the South St. ground, Bellerive, beginning at 2 p.m.

These games will familiarise players with Rugby League rules. Taroona Club has eight players who represented their club in the Rugby Union grand final last season, and who have played representative football in Tasmania. Canterbury can boast of eight representative players. New Town will consist mainly of newcomers to Hobart Rugby. A great asset to this club should be J. Mason, who has played for Queensland in interstate matches. The last-formed League club is Eastern Suburbs, recruited mostly from the Clarence Municipality. Among them will be former Taroona, Gorden. Glenorchy, and Harlequin players.

Team For Rugby League Melbourne
The Mercury (Hobart) 9 April 1954

The Tasmanian Rugby League is to send a team to the Southern States Carnival in Melbourne this season and a representative team from Victoria will visit Tasmania in June.

Tomorrow will see more practice games at the South St. ground at Bellerive. At 1.30 p.m. New Town will be matched against Eastern Suburbs and at 3 p.m. Taroona will play Canterbury.

Because of players' unfamiliarity with rules last week's game was a little ragged, but it is expected that the games tomorrow will produce keener and more solid play with tighter scrums and a better interpretation of the "play the ball" rule.

Rugby League Secures Ground For Training
The Mercury (Hobart) 23 April 1954

The Tasmanian Rugby League has acquired a training ground at Bell St., New Town. The ground, obtained by league representatives on Wednesday, will be available every night, and training on the ground is expected to begin next Tuesday after lighting has been completed.

The first round of roster matches will be played tomorrow at South St., Bellerive. Eastern Suburbs will meet New Town at 2 p.m. Canterbury and Taroona will play at 3.15 p.m.

A member of the league said last night the Victorian Rugby League had been invited to Tasmania on June 14, the Queen's Birthday.

I spent a few years in Tassie as a youngster... The other kids had no idea about Rugby League, and thought it was weird you had to pass backwards, and called a try a "touchdown"... Good to see an NRL game down there, even if it involves the 2 queerest clubs in the league.

Watched a few TFL games at North Hobart - remember the Demons v Seagulls - nice little ground, full of character.

How can a sporting club have a sexual preference?

Unless by 'queerest' you mean strange or odd, then how is the Broncos or the Storm strange or odd? They are two of the biggest RL brands.

What are Storm and Broncs doing about a) getting their fans there and b) accomodation for them?

or is it c) too bloody hard?

I understand the Victorians & QLD'erscan be a bit slow, but I am sure they can jump online and organise flights & accomm all by themselves. Not a difficult task really.

Good to see a match in Tassie. In terms of having a NRL club in the future, I cant really see that happening due to :

* low population
* population is spread out across Tassie
* very low population growth

They should get a game played in Hobart or Launceston ever year though.
