they were under the cap because players who had been paid more than the cap allowed took pay cuts to stay at the club for whatever reason. When the NRL discovered that Melbourne weren't obeying the salary cap rules, their players were not allowed to take pay cuts, so they could not continue to benefit from having breached the salary cap in the first place

Both teams rosters should have been forfeit, all contracts should have been made null and void and they should have had to compete with all of the other clubs to re-sign all of the members of their illegally compiled squads.

Yeah I can't believe how quickly the selectors have relented on Johnson. He's got talent, but he's a pea-heart and needed to prove himself in domestics before being given a look in. Not really impressed at all and even if it pays off short-term I don't want to think about the long term reprecussions.

With that said, I don't think there are many guys you can call 'locks' for the Australian side. It basically starts and ends with Clarke, Hussey & Watson.
Siddle is close. Patto when fit.

But yeah those three are the locks. Although im a bit sceptical about Watson continued role. Adelaide showed we really need his bowling, even before Pattinson went down, but there are reasonable question marks over his ability to stay fit enough to continue bowling and his ability to balance batting and bowling (given the slide his batting has taken as his bowling workload increased under Clarke).

What really needs to happen is a number three to emerge/Clarke go further up the order, so Watson doesnt have to bat till 5/6.

Perth is only a few days away and you don't want him going down during the match like others before him have in this test series

That probably would have killed both clubs completely, glad you're not running the game

I don't think that necessarily would have killed either club because both clubs had a host of players who felt a sense of loyalty toward their club and were even prepared to take pay cuts

No way. Simple fact is that if Melbourne, for example, had have had all contracts nullified, there aren't going to be a swag of clubs with enough money to buy a Cam Smith or a Slater. It would have allowed one or two teams to have a crack though and this would have ensured that Melbourne would have paid a true market value to retain them. The pressure would have been on the depth and mid range value players to be retained. A lot of them would probably have attracted overs. This would have been much fairer on the other teams than what actually occurred.

drove past my cricket oval and the nets are open and were being set up by ground staff. Training in an hour, I'm excited.

Nets were closed last week even though the weather was fine, that was balls. We still trained but had to do a bunch of fitness stuff

Did you ever play womens cricket at the national level? A girl from my high school once did.

I only started playing grade cricket a few seasons ago, but I play for Steve and Mark Waugh's old club and I am very proud of this fact.

I'm not good enough to play for Australia, but I moved up to second grade this season so there is hope for me yet. And our first grade are almost all state players some Australia. And the ACT team train at our ground and they're there whilst we're there, so I'm around the right people.
