When I was younger - 23 or 24 - a female friend told me I hugged like a corpse. I was also told by a fellow forummer that hugging me made him laugh because I seemed to awkward.

So, I went out and I practiced my hug. Proud to say I give f**king good hug now.
How many times were you arrested for harassment before you perfected your technique? :p

I practiced on Koreans while living in Gwangju. I think they just assumed all foreigners really liked hugs.

Oh, I know it.

When I was 17 or 18, I shook hands with my grandfather. He turned to my father and, ignoring me, told him "He shakes like a homosexual".

I went out and learned to shake hands properly too. It was a turbulent time in my life.

you can learn a lot about people from their hugs and handshakes. Both are very similar too.

You need to be firm but not too much and you need to know when to stop. When someone wants to hug you or shake your hand, they are inviting you into their intimate space.

That depends on the health of the individual. I hold back on the firmness if it is obvious that the other person isn't too well.

I've always been a firm (no pun intended) believer in testing their level of firmness and either matching it (for a superior) or slightly exceeding it (for somebody beneath me). Then there's all of the guff about the angle of your hand and what your other hand is doing. It's a science.

In other amazing news, it looks like I'll be a Surry Hills resident in a couple of short weeks. Must resist urge to punch hipsters in the face. A 5 minute walk to work in the middle of the City appeals to me greatly, though... as does a cruisey walk to the SFS/SCG from my front door.
You live in Rabbitohs territory now. Lucky you.

Surry Hills is a pretty good spot. My office was there when I worked for BigPond. Great food, close to the city.

People who give a shit about the f**king anything of a handshake are alphas of a bygone era.

... and yes, Surry Hills is the tits. I am muchly looking forward to being a resident. The lifestyle I've been setting up for myself over the past couple of months is going to be insanely enjoyable. Life's good.
