It's OK. Miguel and I are putting together a new contract on, I mean, FOR SBW.

Not as expensive as one might think either...Toulon is a rough town.

 the dogs and the NRL are behind the 8-Ball here....

ive heard an argument already today that the NRL have a big job on there hands.

There basically trying to enforce an NRL contract despite the NRL Partnership itself being born out of SL clubs breaking there ARL contracts. SBW's legal team will have a field day with this and it will be embarrising for the game.... they could bring up David Gallops dealings in the SL war.... he may have even had a direct role in the Bulldogs walking out on the ARL.... and ofcourse this will all be played out on TV and the papers...

Yes, but at the same time, those contacts where found unenforceable during Super League as they were signed under duress. SBW was the one that asked for 5 years, doesn't sound like that contract was signed in the same manner. You can't compare the situations at all.

"SBW, after having signed his contract with RCT, met his new teammates yesterday whilst reading the exclusive presentation in the Var-matin. He will discover them very soon in flesh and bone."

Look at that smile. Smug bastard.

You must have a very high level of proficiency in the French language, Miguel (unless that is your native language). Btw, your username: Miguel De Cervantes. That name sounds familiar. Wasn't he known as the William Shakespeare of Spanish literature?

If the judge finds him guilty of contempt of court through not appearing, and his manager as well, I think then he can be sent to jail till he purges his contempt.

i disagree.... the argument im making is the validity of the NRL & the Bulldogs enforcing the contract. how can the bulldogs and the NRL argue the sanctity of a contract when they have history of disregarding contracts when it suits them. the SL could well be the perfect precedent that SBW's legal team uses to fight this.

its going to get ugly.... and the NRL could very well be embarrassed in public if it goes down this track.. is SBW really worth that much??

He's worth "that much" to Newscorp, **cough cough**, um I mean the NRL. Think of the papers etc. they could sell both in Australia, NZ and to a lesser extent in France if this takes off in the courts in those countries. I have no doubt they will push this all the way. Any profits will far outweigh legal costs and any NRL embaressment.

Well the only contracts that the Bulldogs had broken, where the ones that the ARL took off them. So there is no history, as no one came to the Bulldogs that wasn't contracted.

1. the nrl has no history of what you claim. it all happened before the nrl was formed

2. the courts decided which contracts were valid or not so why that process should affect SBW now is irrelevant

3. good to see even the all blacks need to rely on players from RL to bolster their ranks. when it comes to producing good quality players for union or league, the nrl is the star rugby code

dally's right about the contracts - there is no relationship between the old superleague contracts and the new contracts entered into by the nrl. it's not relevant.

If the judge finds him guilty of contempt of court through not appearing, and his manager as well, I think then he can be sent to jail till he purges his contempt.

that may be technically true ... but this all relies on the french courts being willing to enforce an australian court order to detain him for contempt, which will take forever and is no certainty.

what do the all blacks have to do with this?? even if he gets out of his contract and plays for toulon hes not eligible for the all blacks.

and if he does come to play rugby in NZ... were hardly wealthy... he wouldnt be on much more than his dogs deal.

NRL are dreaming if they think France are going to give a k*nting f**k about some sporting breach of contract ruling issued in a NSW court. This is a country that gave the agents who blew up the Rainbow Warrior their highest national honour on their return to France. They operate under their own rules over there. And how exactly do the Bulldogs think they are going to get compensation from the millionaire who owns Toulon? Set Fred Briggs on him? The best they can hope for is to get some sort of contempt of court ruling against SBW if he fails to respond to some court order. But that's hardly going to be grounds for extradition from France. Even the judge this morning was saying that "there are some fairly turbulent and difficult waters ahead'' in pursuing this case. The only people who are going to come out of this smiling are the lawyers - and $BW of course.

:)

eXACTLY. Prepare for some french arrogance. It will be a major surprise to me if they even give a damn. Maybe they would only care if forced to.

Remember Napoleon and remember the revolution. The french truly think they are 'entitled' to everything.

Still, I am hopeful Sonny will get whats coming to him and become a very sorry pup.

But it's not just about Sonny Bill...
How the NRL acts in terms of this whole debacle will have an impact in the game in general,in sports with salary caps in general and future problems that may arise that are similar.

What do you expect them to do? Just drop the case?
Are you aware of just how many players/managers are watching this unfold and if the above happened, would then have confidence in doing a similar thing with the knowledge that the NRL would do f**k all.

What Sonny Bill did was wrong,he needs to be punished.
An example needs to be set.

Isnt France part of the EU now??

Would the EU court be a higher authority then a French court on this issue?

France are in their own world as after all they gave in to the criminal germans in 6 weeks and left the Great Soviet Union to vertially fight on alone.

graham henry was asked about him playing for them and he looked eager to get him

good to see that even the supposedly strongest union nation needs to rely on RL players.

as tana umaga and jonah lomu developed their skills in league, why am i not surprised.

When Henry was asked about Sonny Bill after the recent Sydney Bledisloe cup game Henry replied that he'd never seen him play. The fact is he doesn't give a s**t about SBW and was only being polite to the Aussie journalists who were asking.

Why on earth would the ABs want SBW? He's too slow and cumbersome to play a Union centre and too small and inexperienced to play in the forwards. His most potent defensive weapon is the shoulder charge - which is illegal in Union. Plus he's a crock with a busted knee and dodgy shoulders (from all those shoulder charges no doubt).

His future, after a failed couple of years in Union, is probably in the boxing ring. That's Khodar's long term plan.

reserve grade NRL players are now international RU stars, someone like SBW will breeze into a team like the All Blacks.

good to see our players are so well rerspected by union around the world.

its a sign of respect in the nrls development work unlike that in union

what makes me laugh is that before RU went pro you bastards used to steal our bloody players.

Matthew Ridge, Inga Tuigamala, Craig Innes, John Timu etc... RL has pinched more of our NZ players than weve pinched from RL.

ohhh but thats right.... its only ever gone one way....
