What should the Roosters do with their name?

Whilst good for marketing to the overseas tourists I'm nit sure naming yourself after a very smal suburb is a step in the right direction. The SA Roosters sounds much more appealing!

Personally I think it's a great idea. When people go to New York they pick up New York Yankee caps and go to games etc because that team is synonomous with that city- you go to that city, you follow that team. Same would go for Bondi- if you visit Bondi you want something to take away from it, something that shows you identify yourself with that experience. WHat better way then picking up a shirt or jersey of the local football team after seeing a game? Then you can go home and tell everyone about the crazy Australians who belted the #### through each other (without wearing pads!) along with the surf lifesavers, the white sand beaches, etc etc.

Also, it wouldn't hurt the Rooster/Bunnies rivalry if the Roosters started playing up their 'glamour', which an association with Bondi would certainly do. In fact if I was Mr Crowe I'd be secretly working behind the scenes to make this happen. Nothing builds rivalry like a bit of old fashioned class rivalry. Redfern vs Bondi sounds tribal to anyone. Easts vs Souths sounds more like a stoush between compass points.

Bondi c**ks-uckers

but yeah.....i think 'Bondi' is apt. They'd sell a sh*t load of merchandise every year to OS folks who dont even know who they are. It'll be a financial bonanza if they do it right. They have to open up a merchandise shop on Campbell.

Definately get rid of 'Sydney'. and the horse has bolted on 'Eastern Suburbs' in a national competition........unless they adopt the name 'Eastern Suburbs of Sydney Roosters'

It doesn't matter what they call themselves, everyone will still call them Easts. Ask Canterbury + Balmain fans what everyone called them when their name changed to Sydney (other than stupid), or Cronulla + Canterbury when they were known by their monkier only.

Fans want 'Sydney' Roosters scrapped

* By Dean Ritchie

POWERFUL Roosters chairman Nick Politis has revealed his club will formally discuss a name change at its next board meeting after fans yesterday overwhelmingly voted to scrap the Sydney Roosters moniker.

Politis' move comes after The Daily Telegraph revealed the club was considering an exciting new brand name, the Bondi Roosters, to appeal to a new generation of league fans. However, it has become clear many hardened league fans still prefer the foundation club's original name, Eastern Suburbs Roosters.

Nearly 3000 fans voted in an on-line poll with a staggering 85 per cent calling for the club to be known as either Bondi Roosters (26 per cent) or Eastern Suburbs Roosters (58 per cent). The Sydney Roosters (13 per cent) was shunned by the fans.

Politis credited advertising guru John Singleton with the Bondi Roosters idea. Singleton told The Daily Telegraph that Bondi's brand name was as powerful as Australia. Politis confirmed his club would survey fans for their thoughts on a name change.

"I think Bondi is a more global name. It is a stronger name than Easts," Politis said. "I like Easts but I think Bondi is better. We will get a professional research company to do a survey. We will take it up at our next board meeting in December."

The Roosters had a disastrous season this year and many at the club believe a new name would help revitalise the Bondi Junction-based club. Singleton - the man who re-branded the old Newtown Bluebags the Jets - took a tongue-in-cheek poke at the eastern suburbs yesterday and then called for the Roosters nickname to be scrapped.

"Everyone hates the eastern suburbs. If you live there you follow the futures. When you're young you play chess and then do a commercial degree and fiddle with other people's money on the stock market," Singleton said. "A big night out is having half a scotch.

"No one likes the eastern suburbs. I would just call them Bondi. That is an international brand. It is worth as much as the word Australia. The Roosters nickname is 100 years old. It should be consigned to history. It's like the Eels.

"If you called it Bondi, membership in the eastern suburbs would go up 300 per cent and increase by 1000 per cent in Australia.

"Everyone loves Bondi. They should let the members decide. But have a name that recognises the sand and the sun. A good wholesome name. Everyone had a chook 100 years ago. The Roosters is a good name for a country team, like Wagga."

Kevin Hastings, one of the Roosters' greatest players, said he wanted Eastern Suburbs back. "I don't think they should have changed it from Eastern Suburbs. Don't forget it's the whole of the eastern suburbs - it's not just Bondi and it's not Sydney," Hastings said.

"Why do people want to mess with tradition?"

You shouldn't survey only current members, but the potential ones as well.

I like eastern suburbs. But if it will generate the increase in merchandise and memebership, than go with Bondi... though this is first I've ever heard of Bondi..

I can't stand Bondi, it's full of backpackers, try hard wankers, and Roosters fans!

Meant to vote Eastern Suburbs. It would be so refreshing to be able to call the Roosters Easts again, just as it is nice to be able to call the dogs Canterbury.

I'd like to see all the clubs return to their original names. Despite originally being a Balmain fan, I'd even be in favour of renaming Wests Tigers to Western Surburbs Tigers.

Our game has a proud, proud tradition. It's time we reveled in it, rather than suppressing it in modern glitz. With this new commission, we may even see a return of the ARL moniker.

Eastern Suburbs aint a proud name. It was flogged off the rah-rah team that was in existence before the rugby league team, and still exists today.

furthermore, c**ks had, and have no fans anyway. how's reverting back to Easts or Eastern Suburbs going to benefit it apart from providing some sort of nostalgia?

Bondi Roosters is not likely IMO.

My own prediction is that at some point soon we'll see an article in the Tele saying there's been a groundswell of support for a return to the traditional name, Eastern Suburbs.

I think Politis was just throwing a plausible, but controversial idea out there to get people talking and generate a bit of publicity and momentum.

At least that's what I'm hoping! Most Roosters supporters would love to go back to being called Easts.

All ten of them?

The Bondi Armani suits v the South Sydney Armani suits.
