Sydney Roosters considering changing their name to Bondi Roosters

What should the Roosters do with their name?

You shouldn't survey only current members, but the potential ones as well.

I like eastern suburbs. But if it will generate the increase in merchandise and memebership, than go with Bondi... though this is first I've ever heard of Bondi..

That's a good point and one I (probably selfishly) didn't consider. I personally prefer Easts as it's what I grew up with. It's the 74-75 grand final. It's the smell of the chewie you get in Scanlens footy cards but if Bondi brings in new fans them I'm all for it. The only issue I have is that Bondi is a place of fads and fashions. What kind of long term support - if any, will such a name change bring?

Personally I think it's a great idea. When people go to New York they pick up New York Yankee caps and go to games etc because that team is synonomous with that city- you go to that city, you follow that team. Same would go for Bondi- if you visit Bondi you want something to take away from it, something that shows you identify yourself with that experience. WHat better way then picking up a shirt or jersey of the local football team after seeing a game? Then you can go home and tell everyone about the crazy Australians who belted the #### through each other (without wearing pads!) along with the surf lifesavers, the white sand beaches, etc etc.

Also, it wouldn't hurt the Rooster/Bunnies rivalry if the Roosters started playing up their 'glamour', which an association with Bondi would certainly do. In fact if I was Mr Crowe I'd be secretly working behind the scenes to make this happen. Nothing builds rivalry like a bit of old fashioned class rivalry. Redfern vs Bondi sounds tribal to anyone. Easts vs Souths sounds more like a stoush between compass points.

You appear to be living in a parallel universe. :)

Do you truly believe that a club with dwindling support could re-new it's fortunes by broadening it's appeal to tourists? People who are, quite literally, transient individuals?

If the Bondi Roosters became a worldwide famous brand like the New York Yankees they would be far more fashionable to support. This would draw in long-term fans as well.

^ What JM said- fame and glamour are characteristics that would attract a certain crowd. And remember, fashionable is important to that particular part of the world so a fashionable football team is more likely to be something those people will want to be associated with.

And as for the Armani suits- didn't their (now former) coach revert to trackies for the better part of last season as a good luck charm?

Wouldn't go so far as to get rid of the rooster monicker though. Was he taking the piss or serious about that (including the Eels)?

Yeah, I have to agree. I am one of the few who actually likes the "Sydney" name and one of the reasons I do like it, is because it covers a wider audience.

When the NRL featured on Spike last year there was a lot of talk about it on twitter etc and most US fans got on the Melbourne bandwagon, rather than the Parramatta one. It's because "Melbourne" is a World renowned City - whereas Parramatta is a local suburb that is only known in Oz. If League is going to grow outside of Oz, then well known locations will help a team. Especially from a merchandise point of view.

I just think that Sydney is a great City and I am happy for my team to be associated with it. Would the New York Yankees be quite so popular if they were the Statten Island Yankees or the Bronx Yankees?

Still, as people have rightfully pointed out, Bondi is a World renowned iconic location - so it does have that appeal.

Ahh fuggit - as long as they're Red, White and Blue, you can call em f**king Mavis and I'd still support them.

There are a number of distinct suburbs/areas in the Eastern Suburbs called Bondi - Bondi Beach, North Bondi, South Bondi, Bondi and Bondi Junction. Roosters junior club Bondi United's home ground is in North Bondi. As a brand, it is well known nationally and internationally, far more than the Eastern Suburbs district. The Roosters have a connection to Bondi, and while it is a novel suggestion, its a decent one and could possibly work. Eastern Suburbs Roosters could work, and the status quo of Sydney Roosters is OK.

The definition of the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney is a strange one; what RL considers the Eastern Suburbs is not what any other industry (Public Transport, Real Estate) does. Where I grew up is considered Eastern Suburbs, but I was a South Sydney junior due to the redistibution of junior clubs back in the 50s or whenever. The Eastern Suburbs I grew up in certainly didn't match Singo's idea of the east... 90% housing commission in Daceyville, not much stock broking kicking around.

Personally I prefer Eastern Suburbs or Easts, but I reckon Bondi Roosters is a hell of a lot better than Sydney Roosters.

For those voting eastern suburbs, where the f**k is your brain?

Were talking about brand recognition here

Eastern suburbs friggen what? It could be Eastern suburbs anywhere.

If you dont already know the game or how Sydney is senctioned you wouldnt have a clue where there talking about. It gives absolutely no recognition to the club except from the locals.

For god sakes NRL fans, stop taking so many head high tackles.

it's all about the past.......people are just stuck in the past. that's the only reason people prefer the name Eastern Suburbs. you dont see many advocates for Manly to change their name to 'Northern Beaches'.

Eastern Suburbs Roosters!!!

FFS, what more brand recognition is required?

You could ask the same of the Wests Tigers.

Who gives a sh*t if non-NRL fans can't work it the f**k out - use google ya dope!!

Seems to work ok for the Wests Tigers champ ;-)

Sydney Roosters was and always will be a sh*thouse name.

Bondi has big name recognition.

Eastern Suburbs has tradition and will always be our real identity for most fans born before the last decade, and best represents our area. However, as some have pointed out, holds less relevance in a national competition.
'East Sydney' removes this problem, represents our area well, and allows us to still be Easts. If we were to change names, I'd take East Sydney as my preference.

Also, is Singo actually pushing that we ditch the Roosters mascot entirely?

you're comparing a merged club with arguably the biggest fan base in the city, to a club with arguably the lowest.

Why any different?

Both clubs have enormous recognition in their own right.

I would argue the Rooster brand is one of the most recognisable in the NRL.

Sorry but I cannot see the point of sevenel's rant.

Actually, Daceyville is and always was in South Sydney territory even before the 1930's border relocation.

"Easts" was everything to the East of Anzac Parade. "Souths" were the council areas to the West of Anzac Parade.

Maroubra, Coogee, Randwick half of Kensington, Kingsford, Malabar & Little Bay were Easts.

Daceyville, Pagewood, Eastlakes, Botany, Chifley etc were and always will be South Sydney.

Yes, Singo is saying we should drop the c**k. I'm against this. Easts have been all about dropped balls for some time now. I dont want us to drop our c**ks as well.

What about renaming the Roosters "New Manly".

Then, we could rename Manly - "Northern Beaches Scum".

Actually - we might take the name Sydney Barebacks - after all, Darlinghurst would prefer to be part of the Eastern Suburbs than South Sydney.
