Great news about the comp.

Do you know if any of the teams are associated with the old clubs?

I was not involved last time but I know the Cooper brothers were and they have formed the Rabbits, and Aaron Gibson has formed the Thunder.

The Broncos are mainly from Glenorchy and Hobart Lions Rugby Union and my Club (Hobart Tigers) is formed from the Hobart Harlequin Rugby Club of which I was President till about 30 minutes ago!

I am now a true blood Leaguie - and it feels so much better!

More news to follow but the Hobart Tigers defeated the Southern Rabbitohs 22-18 in a cliffhanger at Rugby Park with a try scored in the last ten seconds of the game.

The Broncos were leading the Thunder 26-10 when I decided I needed beer and went to the sponsors pub!

Good result in the Tigers/Rabbits match. Would have expected defence to be a bit softer at the beginning of a new comp in non-league territory. Have a lot of the players played before on the mainland / Pacific?

Where are the Southern Rabbits from? I'm guessing the 'south' refers to the south of the state, or does it mean South Hobart/Taroona/Kingston/Margate and/or the Channel?

The Tigers Rabbitohs match was a beauty. We were down by 14 points and came back to win in the last minute. Score was locked at 18 all till then.

The Teams were basically named by the individual who formed them.

We were Hobart City Quins (my former Rugby Club) but became the Tigers when Balmain agreed to support us. We are now a pure Rugby League side. We have 14 Tongans and about 14 others mostly Hobart born.

Rehu Cooper is a Rabbits fan so thats where they came from.

Eastern Thunder train over the river on the Eastern Shore and the Northern Broncos train out at Glenorchy.

There were over 75 players available today.

We got television coverage as well.

It was a really enjoyable day.

Small steps but a great day!

Apparently the old Launnie team used to field a heap of Pac Islanders who were enrolled up at the maritime college up at Beauty Point. The team would do well leading up to Chrissie, but then all the Islanders would go home and they'd fall over toward the end of the season.

Same story in Rugby Union during the winter. The boys we have will be here for some time although some may return home. We have plenty of players to cover the situation and the game is getting bigger every day.

Round 2

Hobart Lions 16 Northern Broncos 20

Southern Rabbitohs 28 Northern Thunder 20

Match report for Tigers game is as follows:

In an entertaining game at Rugby Park, Hobart Tigers were narrowly defeated by the Northern Broncos 20-16 in the Tasmanian Rugby League's match of the round.

The Tigers opened the scoring with a try in the 8th minute by Sunnia Ma'afu.

The Broncos replied with a try in the 11th minute which also went unconverted.

A nice run by Aydenn Wysh-Wilson saw the Tigers go ahead 10-4 folllowing a strong lead up work by the forwards.

The Broncos struck back in the 29th minute with another unconverted try which saw the match evenly poised at 10-8 at half time.

Straight after the break Wysh-Wilson went over again with Liam Webb converting putting the Tigers ahead 16-8.

Discipline fell away and the Broncos came back with two tries from their talented winger in the 40th and fiftieth minutes which saw them finish with a well deserved win.

Best for the Tigers were Colin Filea, Wysh-WIlson and Loni Vatohi.

Next week the Tigers play the Eastern Thunder, a side which is already shaping up as one with great heart and determination. It will not be an easy game.

In the other game the Rabbitohs had a solid win against the Eastern Thunder.

The Competition is shaping up as a beauty and the players are loving it.

See you all at Rugby Park next Sunday for more of the greatest game of all!!!

The Hobart Tigers defeated the Eastern Thunder 32-28 in an enthralling encounter at Rugby Park today.

The Thunder scored early taking a 4-0 lead. The Tigers came back and were leading 16-4 at the stroke of half time when the Thunder struck back (had to use that line) to take the scoreline to 16-10 at the break.

It was pretty much try for try after that with the Tigers continually penalised for being inside the ten meters which allowed the Thunder far too much possession.

Aaron Gibson and Shane Weirman had huge games for the Thunder and their clever line running caused havoc amongst the Tigers defenders.

The Tigers must clean up this aspect of their play, as Referee Thomas, who had a great game, correctly punished them for a lazy attitude to setting the defensive line.

The score was locked at 28 all when the tigers Loni Vaitohi ran in the deciding try with three minutes to go.

Best for the Tigers were Vaitohi, James Hamilton, Adam Coleman and Sidney Filea.

Try scorers were Liam Webb, Loni Vaitohi (4 tries) and Aydenn Whish-Wilson. Webb kicked three conversions.

Next week the Tigers take on the Rabbitohs who had a loss to the Broncos in the earlier game.

The Broncos defeated the Rabbitohs 46-16 and are looking more deadly by the week. They are the Team to beat!

The fourth round of the Rugby League competition in Tasmania saw two very different results.

In the first game the Northern Broncos defeated the Eastern Shore Thunder 34-6.

The Thunder were gallant in defeat and played a lot better than the scoreline indicated. The Broncos are clearly the dominant side in this competition and deserved their win.

The Thunder are a gritty team and will come back.

In the second game the Rabbitohs came from behind to draw 34 all with the Hobart Tigers.

In cold wet and windy conditions the Rabbitohs raced ahead after an unconverted try in the second minute following a mistake off the kick off to the Tigers.

Tigers hooker, Aydenn Whish-Wilson scored a great try in the 8th minute which was converted by Liam Webb.

The Rabbitohs went in again with a converted try but the Tigers responded with a magnificient try to Sunnia Ma'afu in the 12th minute to take the score to 10 all.

Adam Coleman took the Tigers to a 16-10 lead but the Tigers defence faltered at the crucial last minute of the first half for the Rabbitohs to tie the game up at 16 all at half time.

After half time the Tigers came back with two tremendous tries to man of the match Sidney Filea and Jeff Altmann. But the Rabbits held on with tries in the 41st and 46th minutes to have the game in the balance again.

The Tigers belted the Rabbitohs line and took the score to 34-28 with 5 minutes to go. In a frenetic last minute the Rabbitohs threw the ball from left to right to score a try with ten seconds on teh clock.

The conversion was slotted through and a great game of footy was over with the score locked at 34 all.

Best players for the Tigers were Sidney Filea, Liam Webb (who slotted 4 conversions) and Ryan Devine. The Rabbitohs were reliably served by Reho Cooper, Jeff Tonks and Chris Marino.

Both Clubs should be happy with a great game of football.
