PARRAMATTA winger Eric Grothe will be dropped to the bench for the Eels’ clash with North Queensland on Friday after coach Daniel Anderson revealed he has been playing with a rib injury.

Krisnan Inu will take Grothe’s place on the wing and Joel Reddy will return from a one game suspension, with Grothe moving to the bench.

Anderson said Grothe had had a bad run of injuries and needed to train before he could reclaim his spot.

“Eric had a pretty disrupted training last month,” the Eels coach said.

“He has had a few injuries and hasn’t been able to train.

“And in my mind that is a recipe for more injuries.”

A rib complaint has been the most recent injury to hamper the big winger, to the point where he has been playing without training.

“Last week he only trained for 20 minutes, and that’s not suitable” Anderson said.

“And the last couple of weeks he has not trained at all.

“He has played injured and with discomfort.

“He could play again this week, but it’s got to the point where he needs to train.”

Despite his condition, Anderson has decided to keep playing Grothe, although club doctors did clear the winger on each occasion.

mmmm filiga starting centre now
tbh i would like to see him stay in the back row, our backline is the place where we dont need anymore depth
unless there are long term plans for him if inu and grothe aren't to be here post 2010

Maybe DA is listening to Gus? Gus was saying how our right side defence has been terrible. Tahu+Inu - Reddy+burt - Best defensive combination?

Maybe his back has gone dodgy again?
Not like he hasn't been making runs from our own end.

Maybe its about giving Inu the chance to prove he is worth another contract.

Strange to see Oake go from first grand to the bench in reserve grade

Probably reading too much into it, they are just doing what is best for Wenty.

Surely grothe must be carrying an injury of some sort
He has been the best back this season and everyone knows it

Inu will help in defence...:sarcasm:

He is a 10x better defender than Guru. He missed 1 costly tackle last week but that's a one off. He doesn't rush up out of the line like Guru and leave a 3 man overlap.

No doubt Guru has been our best back this year but if we keep conceding tries down our right edge each week something has to change?

It might be that some of the defensive problems that Inu seemed to have on the weekend were in part attributable to Grothe not playing slide defence properly. It might also be that Grothe is injured or has niggling injuries and needs a rest. Either way, I'm confused and a bit baffled by this one. We'll really miss his fantastic charges off the wing. He may let in a try but he makes massive metres each week and he's been good this season.
