Team vs Roosters??

I'm now at the point where I am thinking we are leading candidates for the spoon. Just starting to come to terms with this likelihood.

Our backs are mud. The Fish is just not up to it, Noby lost form, Johnson isn't playing like a half, Hurrell too inexperienced and slow. TJ and Nielson aside, you wouldn't rate any of them. I am a huge Manu fan, I started to think, maybe the big man has had his day. He seems a legend of a bloke.

Fish, Johnson and Hurrell are terribly lazy and slow on defence and unless all three of them sort it out we're going to concede 30+ every week. Our attack wasn't a problem last year it was the fact that our atrocious defence leaked too many points to make up for. An attitude or technique problem, or both.

Johnson goes missing and the team runs around like headless chooks when he does. He should face some Vulcans time if this keeps up and give the Locke/TL/Godinet/Mara combination a proper go.

Get Taylor out of #9 ffs...

I think 6 weeks is a fairer indication of where we are. Nathan Friend will make a difference, as well as the coach finding out a few more things about his players in certain situations. Keep the faith!

In the mean time, there are 2 points up for grabs against a side that was also pretty poor in Round 1.

Did you see the game? That was the worst season opening performance I can remember.
Not writing them off yet but after a show like that its no wonder there is a lot of pessimism here.

I think as soon as we get some wins on the board, spirits will lift. But we're all pretty Vitamin W-deficient at the moment.

I'm not too bothered. I didn't start this season like last season. Last season, I started with huge expectations that weren't met. This season, I began with low expectations and they have been met. It can only get better or else stay the same.

He basically said these guys are fit enough, they have enough talent. There is just something wrong with their heads and their thinking.

I'd throw in experience too. This is a pretty young side really and there isn't enough hard bastards there to hold it together.

This is true, our best teams had the likes of Price, Tate, Campion, Luck etc. to balance out young and raw. Mannering, Martel, Friend and Lowrie need to step up and take that leadership role.

It's all good to say we'll be a different side with Friend in the side, but I'm starting to have grave doubts about his longevity. I wonder what % of games he's played for us since coming over. Sure, the broken jaw was a freak of nature kind of thing, but it still happened, and he's out for a loooong time with ongoing shoulder issues. We seem to have back ups, but we're still playing a second rower at hooker...

I'm with you mate. I recall coming off a crap season, with a completely unknown coach, in a team that everyone had settled on getting the wooden spoon, getting beaten in round 1 in Auckland by Canberra and then going on to make the finals. IIRC that performance was dire, and there was nothing to suggest the club was going to turn it around.

I'm with you - its round 1. If its such a lay down faizer from here on in, we must as well start the finals with the top 8 thats in place now. I'd almost bet my left testacle a lot of changes will happen between now and then on that premiership table.

Can we accept we are in a development phase within our top side?...cos it sure seems like it.

Dumb stuff, I know we're sitting on a bit of cap but as good as Johnson, Locke and Taylor supposedly are, to have 3 kids with only a handful of years First Grade experience between them as the spine of our side is unacceptable. Then you add Tupou and Hurrell, who quite frankly aren't up to it, a seemingly not all there yet Rapira bros, Mateo who isn't there mentally and it's a recipe for disaster.

I'm not really filled with much confidence in our sides potential this year. They showed glimpses against the Broncos but now that sh*t got real, they got no answer....so far. Any confidence they had after that game got eroded pretty damn quick.

The faith is still strong but is surely being tested....and it's only Round 1!!!!.....

Time will tell but if we get spanked this weekend, we're in for a long drawn out torture of a season.

A guy like Luke O'Donnell would have been good for us this year , we are lacking that hard nose up the guts smash everyone sort of player.

I think though that applies the other way. At the moment its like seeing a book in a bookshop - we're condemning that book on the binding of the cover. We're perhaps not even at the point of the season where we've got the table of contents, let alone the structure of the year. I'm not at all fussed yet. I've seen Warriors teams getting beaten (and by Parramatta) in years we've gone well. The last time they beat us in round 1 we seemed to think they had no show, they rolled us at Eden Park, and we went to the big dance in October.

What I will say about this roster, which I said at times last year, is this is an incredibly inexperienced roster. There's no 250 gamer, there's no 300 gamer, there's only two players in the team who've won a Grand Final. This is a part of the process unfortunately with going with a 'development' club IMO.
