I took this lady to CT today (part of my job) She was about 80ish, well to do. Kept saying she couldn't breath, she had a fall and banged up her hip. Daughter was there, about my age-ish, and so off we go to CT to check out her head for damage, slid her off the bed which is a lot of f**king around (for her) slide sheets, turning her up to put a board underneath to move her onto the machine etc, all while she couldn't breath properly. Then back into Xray, slide her onto the table for her hip.. Lots of f**king around and she still is trying to breath. Finally got her back to her little spot in Emergency, her Daughter was there waiting.

I tell you, this old girl was a funny MF. She was telling jokes the whole way and kept me giggling like a kid through this process. When I got back and was still laughing because she was still cracking one liners, I said to her daughter who was waiting back at the room. She's so funny!

Well she didn't smile back at all, and off I went on my way and I thought, geez she doesn't have the same funny genes as her Mum. But then it hit me. Who would want to lose somebody like her.

Sounds eerily similar to the way my mum went out.

She had advanced COPD and broke her hip tripping herself up trying to put on pajama bottoms in the way to the toilet.

When she was in for the op all the nurses reckoned she was hysterical.

Sadly, she lost a lot of blood during the op, developed a chest infection as a result, and that was the end of her.

The only small consolation I take out of it is breaking her hip that way was such a mum thing to do.

She was pharqued in the head.
Which is about as high a compliment as you can give in her book.

Common way to go out unfortunately (Or fortunately) How ever way you choose to view it.. The funny old girls hip was ok in the end, as was her head, She'll survive it.

Reading back on my post, it doesn't have the same impact as was intended. It was meant to be a perspective thing, it was for me I guess. It was a weird day yesterday. I got the day off today and here I am up at freakin 5:30 !?

It is a strange old thing this ageing process. I remember years ago I either read or heard about group of scientist had a theory and concluded that the average lifespan of a human should/would be around 34 years of age.

They came to this conclusion taking into account that it was when man was still a hunter, collecting his own food (whatever he could find), making and living in his own shelter, no medications or vaccinations or access to medical help, Eating a very limited diet. etc And then the poor woman folk with child bearing unassisted.

When you think about it, you got to a stage where your eye sight starts going, your body strength starts to grow weaker and then all the other fun and games. Wake up every morning and make sure you take your medications. The wonderful grunts and groans as you attempt to get up from sitting down or in fact just sitting down. The morning commando roll out of bed to get going for another day.

Remembering back to the times you were vaccinated against this and that.

I can still remember one of the kids in my class at Kirrawee Primary going missing for a long time and then returning to school with his legs in callipers. Yeah Polio.

I have my own theory: We are all insignificant assoles in the plan and when our time comes to an end it is only your family and friends that really give a shit. You are remembered as a good bloke or a prick, but after a few years you are nothing but a distant memory. Even if you are a good guy or girl and they name a bridge, an oval or a grandstand after you. In time the road gets diverted or upgraded, the oval is reclaimed for housing or the stand is bull dozed.

Just enjoy the ride. Mines been a lot of fun and I hope to keep ducking and weaving for a lot longer.

Yeah, a few times.

It is a nice place, with some great food, but for me it feels like a Disneyland version of Asia.

What sort of stuff do you and your wife like doing? May be better places or use it as a jumping off point. If you like nature a few days in Singapore then across to Borneo.

A place that I think is amazing, and much easier than you think is India but I understand isn't for everyone. Amazing food, vibrant culture and some wonderful wildlife.

One of the best experiences we had was seeing the Northern Lights in Yellowknife Canada. People go on about heading to Scandinavia but Yellow Knife is cheaper and a far greater chance of seeing them. And if you go in September you can combine it with a stop in Bella Coola and see the bears fishing in the rivers.

Send me a DM if you want some ideas or suggestions.

Yeah I never understood when I heard people talking about elderly relatives not surviving a hip replacement.
But after the pre-op conversation with her surgeon it made a lot of sense.
Sadly, everything which she said was a risk going in came to pass.

Glad to hear your patient is doing well.

Great ideas there - thinking of Singapore myself just for something else to see. Mate just got back and enjoyed it - only issue was hard to find a cold beer. They don’t really do decent fridges.

Thanks, PJ…

Yes, my wife is into the food scene - Asian street food..

I think she semi-randomly chose Singapore as “a cool place to visit.”

We’re not loaded, or anything - more just “30-year wedding anniversary demands something special…”.

If you are not that experienced and look at brochures and agents etc travel looks a lot more expensive than it is if you do it yourself. And doing it yourself is really not hard. We look at some of the "deals" they put out for places we've been like India, Tanzania and Uganda and laugh at the prices.

If she is into Asian street food as mentioned Singapore has great food, but you could also do Thailand and Cambodia as well.

Send me a message if you would like some tips on how to plan yourself.

And ignore anything K says :)

Thanks, mate - we lived in Vanuatu for 3 years, so we know what that is like!
The simple life. My daughter got stuck there recently and she went temporarily insane as there was nothing to do. The one International plane needed parts so she spent 2 more weeks than she was supposed to.

Just on Singapore, it's so freakin' expensive for an Asian Country. Thailand, Cambodia etc as suggested is better cost wise and you lose nothing in the gastronomical/cultural dept.

Paul Kent arrested and charged with DV
I'm wary about this. I don't expect the Telegraph to report this but to not see anything from rival papers is a bit suspicious. The only paper reporting is the UK Daily Mail and other than that Twitter. Channel 9 gets a mention. Did anyone hear it on there.
