*seeing it once was bad enough*
Ringo used to impersonate a drummer
When a US reporter asked Lennon if Ringo was the best drummer in the world he replied "he's not even the best drummer in the band"
Pretty much sums him up.
He won the lotto about 100 times over.Although an average drummer by today's standards he remains the richest drummer in the world. Phil comes second.
The band I had back then "Earth Star" opened the Tanelorn Festival in October 1981.
Some of the many bands/artists playing were....
Matt Finish
Men at Work
Midnight Oil
The Church
Split Enz
Rodriguez
Moving Pictures
Goldrush
Billy Thorpe
Mi-Sex
Sunnyboys
Spy Vs Spy
Kev Borich
Pretty fair line-up. I snuck into the Hoey Moey at Coffs Harbour to see several of these bands. Then I ended up working there for a while and dodging the flying barstools, pool cues and (plastic) glasses.
On the Phil Collins thread, my lasting memory is from 1990 or so in Canberra. Weddings Parties Anything were playing in town and were being interviewed on one of the local FM stations. Coming back from an ad break the radio station played on of their house promos "You're a great radio radio station FM 104, but I wish you'd play more Phil Collins"....to which the bass player for WPA replied....."You can get f#$ed then". Nearly crashed my car.
Pete Lawler?
He's a dead set top bloke.
I love how people try to use the amount of records/cds/mp3s etc that bands/artists sell to indicate how good someone is.
It's like saying soccer is the best sport because more people in the world follow it.
Case in point, Justin Bieber.
Sure he's the most marketable but is he actually any good.......?

Yep, absolutely Pete Lawler.
I went to see WPA at little pub in the hinterland behind Coffs. I was chatting to this bloke in a bluey at the bar, then band started and he put his schooner down and ran on to the stage pick up the bass (they were already up to the middle 8 on the first song).
come on mate, McDonalds is the best food as its around the world ;-)

Mick Thomas is still one of my favourite songwriters of all time.
There's nothing especially legendary about the song construction/harmony/lines etc but he just writes fantastic catchy songs that tell great stories with perfect imagery.
Bono said something along the lines of ... "In 100 years everyone will have forgotten who U2 are and our songs but people will be sitting around in bars singing Mick Thomas' songs"
